!!!! the thing is like. i do think that there was a way for ace to continue to have a childhood past that but it didn’t end up mattering because the state of Being Roger’s Son affected the way his caregivers treated him so badly. and he didn’t ever get treated like a child he got treated like an employee and it primes him to raise luffy

And it had to have hurt bearing witness to Dadan softening up over the years post Luffy. Probably because of Luffy. I can’t remember if it’s actually canon that Ace moved them into the treehouse.

I wonder how Ace explained what a dad is. Because Luffy’s only personal example is Sabo’s dad, Outlook III.

How would Ace explain a mom? Because his closest living mom is Dadan but for Luffy, that’s kind of Makino.

i categorically refuse to believe that ace called anybody his mom including dadan because of his issues #hisissues but i think for him he really can only explain parents in terms of birth. like realistically Who With Good Parents does asl know?? and ace has no idea what parents are supposed to do, or what explanation would be useful for luffy who’s basically an orphan and doesn’t need to hear about how “Parents Are Adults Who Care For You”. plus he’s likely automatically biased against all fathers just by virtue of his father (as far as he knows) leaving his mother to die, and luffy probably being in the same boat

i understand where people come from mothertruthing dadan because like. to herself she is ace's mother. at the time of his death she does consider herself to be his mother. and this isnt exactly wrong but i think that her lack of care toward ace during his youth is really important to both of their characters. like ace is defined by growing up in a world where nobody wants him alive. dadan Keeps him alive but wishes aloud that he would die to make her life easier. theres this one postwar scene that kills me when theyre building the treehouse where sabos like Huh i wonder where dadan is. and ace flashes back to the "devil's child has the devil's luck" scene and says she's probably glad theyre gone. like it doesnt come from a vacuum. and dadan WANTS to be ace's mother by the end but she never encourages him to think of her like that so he doesn’t. why would he.
