ALANNAH !
Glasgow was a common destination for Alannah during the summer – it was her dad’s hometown and hence, where a great majority of her family lived. Though, for all her visits, the young witch hadn’t managed to venture out far from her grandfather’s home – this year she’d make an effort to see more of Glasgow, though often found herself in stores the tiniest bit similar to those back home in London. The little store she was in now oddly reminded her of a store just around the corner from her home, and while Alannah wasn’t necessarily the sentimental type, she was glad for the familiarity. Her little bubble popped soon enough, with an easily recognizable yell – good old Duncan Fainu’u. Could always be counted on to keep things interesting. “Captain!” the witch greeted, face split in a grin. “You seem… happy to see me.”
going inside the store, duncan was mesmerized by the quidditch equipment they had available. how he'd never been there? oh, yes, he had no money. even though quite a lot of things caught his eyes, he couldn't help but direct himself to the familiar witch. "why wouldn't i be, reed? i love being BLIND by rage during my summer vacation" he deadpanned. the irony of meeting the dark-skinned witch in a quidditch supplies shop did not go unnoticed. maybe she could show him in person what was wrong with all of his tactics. "why are you here and not in... hell, or wherever you summer?"
PHILIPPA !
pippa couldn’t help it ; her eyebrows shot up when he started rambling on and then taking back his words only a moment later. she’d watched him flounder around girls on more than one occasion, hard not to when they were in the same house and shared a common room, but had never witnessed it quite so obviously herself. it was almost … endearing, and she hated herself for noticing it. ugh. she’d been serious before when she’d referred to him as a terrible quidditch player. it wasn’t even his fault, really. the whole gryffindor house team seemed to get worse and worse every year. yet even after she’d I N S U L T E D him { to his face! } he was still standing in front of her and offering to show her around muggle glasgow. if anything, she had to admire his C O U R A G E. perhaps that was why she nodded and threaded her arm through his, tugging him back towards where they’d left their parents after a reply of, – “sure, why not? spending the day with you can’t be worse than spending it by myself. i hope.”
with a kiss pressed against her father’s cheek and a crumpled wad of muggle bills snuck into her hand, she safely tucked them into her purse and turned back to the atwood-lowell women standing with their son. “it was a pleasure to meet the both of you, truly.” she added with a friendly smile, “… and i hope you don’t mind me borrowing your son for the afternoon. i promise to bring him back in one piece.” she waited patiently for the family to say their goodbyes before going off with duncan .. only waiting long enough for their parents to be out of earshot before her curiosity got the best of her. “they’re both your mums, right? i’ll be honest,” she admitted, “… i’ve never met anyone who has two mums. they’re L O V E L Y, though.” pippa, never one to keep her thoughts to herself, continued. “… it’s interesting though, isn’t it? how far advanced the muggle world is in some ways compared to the wizarding world? you know, where it’s usually the opposite.” she shrugged her shoulders, skipping along and not keeping watch on whether or not he was keeping up. he was a quidditch player, after all. if he couldn’t keep up with the spirited witch, he had bigger problems !
duncan was surprised by how little it took for pippa to warm up to him. maybe because he picture the witch as this ice princess, while he was just a common goblin. and a terrible quidditch player, of course. while the comment was hurtful, it would have inflicted a lot more rage into the gryffindor if his entire house had not already called him that after the quidditch semifinals last term. he'd had enough ENRAGED discussions in the common room to get that out of his system. plus he would never yell at a girl. maybe at one of his friends, but pippa and duncan were far from being friends. maybe not so far after that afternoon. "are you sure?" he asked in disbelief, as he saw no reason on her part to say yes to his invitation.
he let his mothers know he'd be back home before dinner, and the two women replied with shocked expressions, followed by mocking kissing noises. duncan rolled his eyes and planted a kiss on ada's forehead before shaking mr. carstairs hand, a few polite words rolling out of his tongue, and going off with pippa's arm around his. "yeah, they are. my birth mom is ada, the brunette one. she met theresa when we moved to scotland. i was born in new zealand, but my mum - ada - is from here. they went to high school together and lost touch, but met again here in glasgow. theresa and her daughter have been living with us for..." duncan paused to reminisce. "... ten years now. yeah" he breathed for a bit. he loved his mothers very much, and would often talk about them to anyone who had the time and patience to hear. "yeah, but they still go through a lot of S H I T. the hogwarts staff's been nothing but nice to them, whereas suzie - my stepsister - had to transfer schools before, because the other parents didn't approve." duncan sighed. it upset him that his family had to go through things like that. his breath was a little l o u d due to all the talking while having to keep up with a skippy witch; his steps where almost the same rhythm as a jog now. "sorry, i'm blabbering. but they are great people. your father looks cool too. you're also a muggleborn, right? what's your family like?" he probed, trying to distance the topic from himself.
ROSALIND !
wednesday, august 10th 1988 insufferable bane of my existence,
if you feel as though the ‘ dog ate my homework ‘ excuse would make you look witty, it simply intensifies the burning in my stomach that makes me want to strangle you. which is a surprise, i might say, as i was under the impression that you couldn’t annoy me any further than you already had.
we all get what we deserve, honey. i get sunshine and warm sand, you get rain and fog. but do send my regards to your family, as i imagine they’re much nicer than you and therefore i like them already.
despite my uncle’s love for good wine, he’s a very sober man. he’s also a very good captain and can actually make his team do something decent— if they aren’t good, he trains them. i certainly don’t want to sabotage my own house’s team, but maybe you are… by not resigning. i swear by merlin’s underpants, duncan, if we have another terrible season i will personally shove your broomstick up your arse. so, you’re going to step up your game. or else.
counting the seconds until we meet again, roz

𝓑eloved 𝓡osalind,
𝓘t never occurred to you that making you upset might be exactly what i intended? you just make my mind games way too easy, roz. did you know that premature stress leads to premature wrinkles? you're not gonna have a smooth face forever. you might want to think about the burden of time next time you consider scalping me. also, i hear azkaban's not everyone's favourite holiday destination.n
𝓐lso, i hardly think you got the best deal in this equation. the sun can also provoke irreparable skin damage. looks like the combination of stress and solar rays will leave you looking like a house elf by the time you turn 40. by the way, everyone here loves you. with the obvious exception of the the writer of this letter.n
𝓦hat team does your uncle lead, by the way? i haven't heard of a winning mexican team in decades. sounds like he's not doing that good of a job. plus, aside from me and aidan, our team is pretty much made up by whoever can sit on a broom for 5+ seconds. i plan on putting together a great one next year. maybe you should join, since you're so certain that i'm doing such a terrible job. then you could come to the meetings and explain all the things i'm doing wrong. if you prove me wrong, we'll get back to that broomstick kink.
𝓚indest regards,

hi y'all!! so for some reason all of my private messages completely disappeared god knows why so if someone sent me something in the last 24h and i didn't reply you might want to check if it's still there
ROSALIND !
tuesday, august 2nd 1988 duncan,
if not replying to my last two owls is the written equivalent of you covering your bloody ears when i talk, it’s working to get on my nerves as well as the former.
regardless, how’s the summer treating you? i imagine you’ve been working on the strategies i mentioned all throughout last year and in the two letters i sent last week, because if not we’re going to have a problem on our hands, mate.
all jokes aside, during my holidays in mexico last week i spoke with my uncle about our current predicament and he suggested you try the hawkshead attacking formation. it’s risky, if the execution is sloppy, but i reckon it’s worth a shot.
love, roz ps: if you don’t get back to me i WILL come find you, and you know i’m not joking, you git.

𝓓arling 𝓡osalind,
𝓘 would never engage in such childish behavior and i am deeply offended that you would suggest otherwise. no, rosalind, i did not ignore your last letters. my dog, oscar, ate them.
𝓢ummer has been nothing out of the ordinary. my mums are happy to have me. my little sister is probably going to read my school books before i ever do. scotland weather is still terrible, and i must say i quite envy you for having a mexican paradise home.
𝓣rust me when i say i mean no offense, but is your uncle a drunk? i would need extremely skilled chasers in order to even consider the hawkshead formation, and with the graduation i just lost two very good ones. are you trying to sabotage your own house's team? did one of the other captains send you?

JAY !
jay sent a wave in their direction as he watched duncan’s moms walk away. “yeah man, of course i brought my skates. don’t go nowhere without ‘em.” he held his hand up to the gryffindor for a high five. “so, what’s there to do around glasgow?” he asked as he picked his duffel bag back up, further exploring the home he’d been invited to stay in. after a beat, he turned back around to ask, “also, where should i put my stuff?”
"oh, my room's over there. let me get that for you" duncan snatched the duffel bag from jay's hand, guiding the american wizard to a small corridor on their left, which was even narrower with the addition of a bookcase filled with medical publications. there were two doors on the right, the first being a very pink bathroom and then the master suite, both doors open. to their left was the door to duncan's room, which was decorated with a stop sign and a black board which read "visitors unwelcome". the second door was closed shut, and colorful letters spelled out the name "susie". "it's probably a little messy, but i did my best" he apologized, guiding his friend inside. there was a bed in the corner, unrecognizable under the pile of magazines, clothes and books. a bronze cage in the corner held duncan's brown owl, marge. there was also a bookcase with some magical books, duncan's broomstick and skateboard, and a mattress on the floor. "mi casa es su casa."
wizard glasgow was often forgotten during duncan's summer holiday, in which he preferred to spend time with his family rather than risk running into any of his classmates. that wasn't working out at ALL, since he had already bumped into pippa carstairs that one time, so he decided to not wait until he was at the diagon alley buying supplies to check out the latest nimbus broomstick. his nose was pressed against the window and his eyes g l i t t e r i n g at the gorgeous broom when he recognized a face too familiar inside the shop. "you got to be shitting me!" he cursed, entering the store. + @alannahpls
me: is actually replying to my threads and is proud of herself me @ me: bitch what about your assignments me @ y'all: DOES ANYONE WANT MORE THREADS WITH DUNCAN OR DORRIE???
PHILIPPA !
pippa knew that she could come off quite strong. she was incredibly strung, passionate, and cared more about things than was probably necessary in some cases. she gave him a hard time about quidditch because she wanted to see gryffindor actually win the cup for once. she questioned his comments because she wasn’t entirely sure whether or not it was an I N S U L T and if she should be mad at him for it. it wasn’t that she tried to be overly difficult, or pushy, it was just in her nature. she wouldn’t have known how to stop even if she tried. “… well it was an odd question.” the gryffindor replied, an unamused look fixed on her features. it seemed like every interaction they had seemed to go worse and worse each time. first, he’d fallen asleep in the middle of their conversation, and now she was insulting him for little to no reason. honestly, she might have felt bad were she in a better mood. “so no, i wasn’t shopping for mirrors. daddy had business in town and i came along with him. he travels a lot, so, it’s the easiest way to get to spend some time with him.” she let her arms fall to the wayside, no longer standing quite so defensively. “…and you? i’m guessing you live nearby?”
odd question?, duncan asked himself upon hearing pippa's excuse. it was an awesome burn, which he was actually proud of. maybe she just lacked a sophisticated sense of humor like his. even though the two students were on the same house, duncan had never been able to quite figure out what pippa was about. she was pretty, of course, he wasn't blind––– despite what some quidditch commentators might've said during the semifinals. and, like most pretty girls, duncan acted remarkably weird around her. weird, awkward, mean, you call it. it wasn't his actual personality more than his nerves. girls intimidated him, especially girls like pippa. girls who were pretty and knew about it. "it was a joke, 'cause you're pretty––– you know what, NEVERMIND. it was stupid anyway" he confessed, running his hands through his hair quite nervously. he was about the add 'pretty V A I N', but that probably wouldn't be well received. the quidditch captain didn't know what was worse; that he had just called her pretty, or that the actual sentence implied that she only cared about her looks. "um, yeah, about five miles that way" he pointed to pippa's back, where the fainuu-atwood-lowell residence was. "if you want a guide, i guess i could take you someplace cool. if your dad's busy or something."
JAY !
jay wasn’t sure he’d ever been in a home like the fainus, not even in his home state of california. there was something to be said about the dream catcher and crystal decorated house; the latter caught the light, giving the home a glowey effect on the morning of his arrival. it was quirky but organized, and as he slung his duffle bag off his shoulder, the towering gryffindor decided he liked it.
“sweet place,” jay said enthusiastically to duncan, just as his two mothers appeared.
“uh, my parents didn’t drop me off ‘cause they couldn’t.” he knew they would understand, considering jay’s parents were muggles too. “thanks for opening the floo network,” he added respectfully to all three fainus, casually dusting off the shoulder where a speck of floo powder rested. “and inviting me into your home, miss. ada, miss. theresa.” jay shook the owner of each hands as he said their names, then handing them a batch of homemade cookies. “this is from my mum.”
a mum who had no idea that duncan’s parents were both women. sometimes jay forgot how different the outside world was to the wizarding world– as far as he was concerned, this was one of the only ways that it had got the muggle world beat with acceptance ( though the world clearly lacked common sense since it then judged people by BLOOD. ) jay personally didn’t care, but both of his parents were catholics. opening their arms to the world of magic had caused enough strain as it is. while he didn’t think his parents would’ve stopped him from staying, he could still do without their forced smiles they wore when they didn’t understand something.
coming back home from hogwarts, duncan often didn't realize exactly how unusual his family must look from other people's view. he knew having two mums wasn't a traditional arrangement, but at that point it mattered so little to the half samoan wizard that the warnings he should probably give to people often slipped his mind. jay, of course, already knew about that. they had been sharing dorms for six years now, and duncan would always muse about his loving family in scotland. the fainu'u-atwood-lowell household was ALWAYS home to whoever showed up on their doorstep.
he conducted jay through the small entrance hall, with dreamcatchers pending from the ceiling and crystals neatly organized by the doorstep. there was a salt shaker for new visitors, but duncan fought ada on not making jay go through that unnecessary ritual. they were wizards, for merlin's sake. can you get more protected than that?<
"you know my mums, ada and theresa, from the pictures and stuff" duncan acknowledge his family RECKLESSLY. he was just too excited to have jay around. "suzie's probably in her room, but you should catch her around dinnertime. where is oscar?" his question was quickly followed by a soft "in the garden, honey" from theresa. duncan, however, had already forgotten about his dog and was grabbing a handful of the baked treats brought by jay and stuffing them in his mouth. "man, this is good. did you bring your skates?" it was a stupid question, since duncan had been bugging him about it on letters ever since the break began. theresa was startled at her son's poor manners, while ada just chuckled softly and guided her partner away from the boys. "we'll leave you boys to it. dinner's at five, duncan. don't be late!"

PHILIPPA !
if his words were meant to be an insult, pippa didn’t register it. or if she DID, and there was a glint in her eyes that went unspoken … it would sure come back to bite him in the arse later on .. when neither of their parents were around to witness her ire. “that you are.” she agreed, a smile gracing her features - though it did nothing to curb the S A S S behind her words. “maybe this year they’ll actually succeed under your direction?” her smile widened as her father frowned, glancing between the two students in confusion. instead he turned to ada and theresa, extending his hand to shake theirs. “excuse my daughter, she’s very… competitive.” pippa could only smile as she shrugged her shoulders, nodding at the two women in acknowledgement. “only a little. this is my father, edward carstairs .. and i’m philipa. pippa for short. it’s so nice to meet the two of you! duncan speaks very highly of the two of you..” a hand came up to comb through her hair as their parents slipped into easy conversation, taking hold of duncan by the elbow and excusing them as she tugged him away. “mirrors? really?” her breath came out in a huff, dropping his elbow as hands came up to rest on her hips. “what were you implying, fainu’u?“
duncan was still giggling at his terrible mirror joke when he felt pippa guiding him away from their parents. it was definitely not a gentle touch, but he couldn't help but oblige; it wasn't like it was a suggestion from her part. he was still a little hurt from the implication (not actually an implication, more of an affirmation) of the POORNESS of his quidditch skills, but he was trying not to let it show. he felt felt like pippa could s m e l l people's weaknesses. "it was stronger than me" he admitted, although he was still a little proud of it. "i'm not implying anything, 'twas a simple question" he scoffed, folding his arms. out of his mothers' reach, his bravery fell a little short. plus, pippa was a scary character. that last time they spoke, he admittedly doze off at some point, which was, apparently, something she was still mad at him for. "what are you doing in muggle glasgow, of all places?"
