Peter looked up, the bright sunlight spilling in stinging his eyes, a sudden sharp pain shooting through him into the back of his neck, he groaned, loud, loud enough for F.R.I.D.A.Y to respond “Mr. Parker, your temperature has risen to 101.2 degrees fahrenheit, shall I alert Mr. Stark?” That woke him up, Peter sat up almost immediately, the fear of Tony finding out overwhelming him “uh- No!! No Fri that- thats okay!! I’m good just-” suddenly a harsh, wracking cough overcame him, his chest heaving, hoping for a chance to gain the oxygen back “-I’m… I’m good just.. Just give me a second..” Peter said, breathless. It was his first full weekend at the tower in months, what with patrol, missions, May, he hadn’t had the time in so long, so, he wasn’t sick.. he can’t be sick.
He laid back down, his breathing steadying back down to normal, staring at the ceiling, almost as though he was attempting to will the symptoms away. His nose running, chest tight, head pounding, how on earth was he going to convince everyone he was fine? He knew he didn’t have a choice though, and the longer he stayed laying there, the more suspicious he was going to become when he eventually did go down. Peter willed himself back up into sitting, almost completely exhausted just from just that. He swung his legs over the side of the bed, every movement making his bones and his muscles ache, a deep pain washing through his body, forcing Peter to let out a deep groan. As he brought his feet to the floor, the pain began to lift, not gone, but.. bearable, still deep, still aching, but manageable ‘I got this, I’m good, I can do this’ he thought to himself, hoping he could gaslight himself into believing it. He stood, his bones weak and shaky, but standing.
He managed to take a step, then another, and another, until he eventually had made his way into the ensuite bathroom. He looked up in the mirror, his skin pale, sweat starting to bead at his hairline, the bags under his eyes settling deep in his face, his nose pink around the edges “God..” Peter sighed, realising that there was no chance he was going to get by without question. He runs the tap, filling his hands with the cold water and splashing it over his face in hopes that it would wake him up, bring him back to normal, even if it was just for a minute… no luck, ‘I’ll be fine, I’ve got this, I’m good’ he thought to himself, the dryness of his throat sitting in the back of his mind, with the tap still running, he drank, sipping on the stream dripping down the drain; the cool liquid stinging his raw throat.
He leaves the bathroom, each step sending an aching pain up through his whole body, his muscles so fatigued that the idea of doing anything but laying back down in bed seemed impossible, lightheaded, he managed to make his way to the closet, he kept clothes at the tower, just in case he ever needed them. He held himself to the closet, keeping himself standing, when his nose started to run, dripping like a faucet, he looked around the room, hoping that there was a box of tissues somewhere; of course not, why would there be? It’s Stark tower for god sake. So, he managed to make his way back to the bathroom, seating himself on the toilet and pulling a wad of toilet paper off the holder, shoving it to his nose, cleaning himself up. He got back up, made his way back over to the closet, opening it. He pulled out a pair of worn blue jeans and a dark red t-shirt with the periodic table on the front, tugging it over his head, and pulling each pant leg on, his movements were slow, lethargic.
After about five minutes sitting on the edge of his bed, he decided he didn’t have a choice anymore, he couldn’t put it off any further, he had to leave the room.
So, he does, pulling himself up from the bed, dizzy but determined enough to keep going, he swung his bedroom door open and started to make his way to the elevator, each step screaming at him, when he heard footsteps. He turned to see Steve, his broad frame filling the hallway “Hey Queens-” Steve said happily, but he hesitated “-oh.. you don’t look well son, you alright?” Peter’s eyes went wide, no chance he had been caught that quickly “Yeah! No I’m fine, I just went for a run so.. uh.. yeah…” Steve looked unsure, but he was a trusting person “hm.. Okay. you sure? Just let me know if you're feeling under the weather okay? Don’t want you catching anything full force, huh” Peter forced a smile, managing to stammer out a quick “uh- yeah! Yes sir.. Um..” before scurrying off to the elevator, pressing the down button
Eventually, the doors opened, he scampered in, the doors closed after him. Peter stood there for a while, taking a deep breath, his lungs didn’t like that. The air started to push itself out of his body, resulting in hard, wracking, heavy coughs, coming deep from his chest. He barely had time to catch his breath before the doors opened up to the main common room. He walks out, finally having his breath back, his head pounding, making his way out to the kitchen.
He sat down on one of the white barstools, giving his legs a break, when he heard from behind him “Roos!” Tony. Peter turned to look at him, hoping that he magically looked better, but according to Tony’s reaction.. he didn’t “Jesus kid” Tony said, his voice laced with concern. Peter winced “...Hi Mr. Stark” He sighed “Christ kid, when I asked what you were going as for halloween this isn’t what I meant, you alright?” “yeah no I’m fine!! I’m good” Peter stammered out “you look sick Pete.” “No!! No I’m good, I’m fine!! Just.. just tired, not sick, swear” Tony sighed, looking Peter up and down, clearly not convinced “You’re not.. Sick, Peter you look like you just crawled out of a gutter” Peters eyes flashed, managing out a quick “No I’m good just… I’m just tired.” “Okay, look, I need you to be honest with me here, because you know I’m not used to this” Peter looked up at him again, trying to will the color back into his complexion “Seriously Mr. Stark! I’m good” Tony still wasn’t sure, but he didn’t see the point in fighting it, he knew the kid was too stubborn to stop “I- Okay kiddo, just… just tell me okay? Don’t need May biting my head off because her kid passed out on the side of the road okay?” Peter nodded, peeling himself off the barstool, he needed to get out of that tower, but where would he go? Not like he could go on patrol, or school, he didn't have a choice
He made his way back to the elevator, heading back up to his bedroom, honestly just hoping to hide out for a while, take a break, the weight of exhaustion starting to wash over him. The elevator doors dinged open, he stepped out, walking quickly back to his bedroom in an attempt to stay under the radar. Pretending that he was fine was really catching up to him, opening his bedroom door and closing it quickly behind him, his muscles ached with fatigue, his eyes flashed to the bed, the weight of exhaustion pulling him, it outweighing the thought of getting caught. He laid down, his bed soft, warm once he pulled the covers over his still jean-clad body, he turned to his side, drifting off almost immediately
Three hours later, his eyes blinked open, slowly. He let out a low groan, his nose clogged, throat raw, chest tight, head pounding, he was sick. There was no denying that now. Then, from the corner of the room “Morning sunshine” Peter startled up into sitting, looking over, it was Tony, he was sitting in a chair in the corner of the room Peter swore wasn’t there before “Mis- Mister Stark???” His voice was hoarse, cracking on the ‘Mister’, Peter took a second, fully looking at Tony now. He didn’t look disappointed, more… worried? “uh you- what are you doing in here???” Peter stammered out, Tony looked at him, sighed like ‘this kid is gonna be the death of me’ “not sick huh? Y’know you didn’t have to lie to me, I’d rather know” a wave of guilt washed over Peter, momentarily overshadowing the fatigue “I- I know… I just didn’t want like… I didn’t want to bother you…” Tony’s eyes went wide “Bother-?? Bother me?? Kid I don’t care, why would I care?? I’m a little more concerned about you dying in your sleep than the, well nothing, that I was doing today.” Peter looked up, opened his mouth like he was about to respond, but his body betrayed him, coming out in another harsh coughing fit, Tonys eyes flicked up, alarmed “Easy, easy kiddo” he said, making his way over to the bed, placing a hand on Peter’s back, rubbing in slow circles “You’re disgusting you know that?” He was smirking as he said it, almost as though he was hiding the concern bubbling under the tone, “Go back to sleep kid” Peter looked up, still catching his breath, slightly delirious “...are you gonna stay?” Tony was caught off guard, but before he could even think “do you want me to?” Peter looked up at him with those wide brown eyes “...if thats okay?” Tonys heart melted “yeah, yeah absolutely, always kiddo”
