OF COURSE I couldn’t pass up drawing Sailor Moon for the Character Design Challenge 💕
Usagi isn’t very graceful, but I love how elegant she looks in her attacks and transformations
My first Sailor Moon Drops comic! For those who don’t know, ‘Sailor Moon Drops’ is an official Sailor Moon mobile game, similar to ‘Candy Crush’.
I’m having too much fun with it. Seriously though, who else gets mad when he shows up on the screen? XP

Inktober Day #8! Ahiru Arima from Princess Tutu ❤️
I don't know if you have talked about it, but what you think about the ginzuishou being usagi's star seed considering basically everything that happened around it?? (being broken in 7 pieces, villains wanted it, etc)
Dude, I have so many questions about Star Seeds, and I’m so certain I’m going to get answers to none of them.
None of it makes sense to me. I mean on the one hand, I can kind of get that Usagi’s Star Seed is the ginzuishou. It’s tied directly to her life force, and so are Star Seeds. As an unexamined concept, it makes sense well enough, I guess. But looking at the larger picture even a little, it just doesn’t work for me at all.
I get that the ginzuishou is the most powerful artifact in the entire universe, and I actually think that’s awesome, I like Usagi having The Thing, if for no reason other than it gives me a good reason for why all this super nasty bad shit keeps coming to our girls and they have to fight it. But it being special and unique also means IT NEEDS TO BE SPECIAL AND UNIQUE. I don’t mean like “Everybody else’s Star Seed is a diamond and Usagi’s is a lotus flower” unique, I mean in the sense that it’s not Usagi’s Master Lock Magical Tchotchke. Her Heart Crystal, for example, might have glowed a bit more than the average, but otherwise it was just a Heart Crystal, same as everyone else’s, and the ginzuishou didn’t factor into it at all.
The ginzuishou doubling as her Star Seed now classifies it as a thing that is most assuredly not unique. EVERYONE has a Star Seed. EVERYONE. Some may be “true”, some may be whatever the fuck they call one that isn’t “true”. But within a second, the ginzuishou went from “unique thing in all the universe” to simply “best version of most common thing in the universe”. It’s like finding a Rattata with a 1000 base attack. That’s a pretty powerful Rattata, BUT IT’S STILL A FUCKING RATTATA.
I wound up going on a huge and ultimately unnecessary tangent, so let’s delete that. Basically, I think the ginzuishou works better, and makes more sense to me, if it’s an artifact (I personally headcanon it with a degree of sentience) that is tied to its master – in this case Usagi – and which is powered through her lifeforce and will. Having it ALSO be one of Usagi’s Magical Tchotchkes makes no sense at all any previous context. Usagi’s had it stolen before, she’s straight up LOST the fucking thing, and been fine. If everyone has a Star Seed, which they do, and if losing that Star Seed will kill them in one form or another, which it does, how the hell did she even survive conception, let alone run around for fourteen years and 34 episodes before the bloody thing actually existed again.
Ultimately, I think it’s another bit of poor, myopic writing in the season. As with so many of the parts of Stars with which I’ve taken issue, it’s looking for the quick emotional pay-off – the dramatics inherent in Usagi and a damaged/threatened ginzuishou – without thinking it through or wanting to put the work in.
Or in other words, when I get to the end of the season and have as much canon as it’ll give me, I HAVE MY WORK CUT OUT.
My personal headcanon is that the ginzuishou is not actually Usagi's starseed, but that her starseed was fused to it due to Reincarnation Shenanigans.

Animal Senshi by ChibiRikku
In the Sailor Moon manga, the Sailor Animamates (Sailor Galaxiaâs henchwomen) are not really Sailor Senshi at all, but rather ordinary civilians who stole the powers of their planetâs resident Sailor Senshi by killing them and obtaining their Star Seeds. Doing this transformed them into pseudo-Senshi with different names and appearances from the Senshi their powers originated from:
Sailor Chu â> Sailor Iron Mouse
Sailor Mermaidâ> Sailor Aluminum Siren
Sailor Coronis â> Sailor Lead Crow
Sailor Mau â> Sailor Tin Nyanko
Sailor Cocoon â> Sailor Heavy Metal Papillon
Aside from a brief glimpse of Sailor Coronis, we have no idea what these original Sailor Senshi looked or acted like. A Deviantartist called ChibiRikku decided to rectify that! Be sure to check out the individual artwork pages; ChibiRikku gives a detailed account about each Senshi.Â

Mamoru arrived in America and promptly got amnesia in, like, the first twenty minutes after leaving the airport, because Mamoru. He did somehow make it to college (He probably had directions pinned to his jacket or something,) but with no idea who he is or where he should go from there, he ended up sitting confused and forlorn in the student union. There, a kindly fellow student (whose name he soon found was Craig, and who worked at the convenience store between classes and whose roommate never showed up for some reason) took him in. Unfortunately, he was only on break and didn’t really trust this amnesiac stranger to navigate campus safely alone, so he took Mamoru back to work. And there, as he crossed its glass-doored threshold and stood under the flickering fluorescent lights, he knew that he found where he belonged.
He promptly begged the manager for a job (her name was Rhonda, she worked for the campus food staff and had a three-year-old daughter named Keela who was absolutely adorable,) and the manager figured it would be fine so long as someone kept an eye on him.
Within a week, Mamoru had inspired the generally apathetic staff to make their convenience store THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF HEALTH with nothing but his tireless work ethic, his spontaneous and very impressive speeches, and the limp wilty flowers they were selling for some student theater fundraiser, and they proceeded to lobby for funds for a new slushie machine since the old one hadn’t worked reliably in three years. It was the happiest moment Mamoru could ever remember.
Of course like six months later he was tracked down and kidnapped by Galaxia to taunt Sailor Moon. When she found him, he still had no memory of who she was, but knew instantly that she was his princess, and invited her to return with him to see what magnificent changes he had brought in his domain. (She was of course wowed to see the convenience store. Everyone else just went “Yep, that’s the real Mamoru all right.”) He spent the rest of the finale alternately having a weapon pointed at him, shouting confused but heartfelt motivational speeches at Sailor Moon, and being taken aside by the rest of the Senshi who tried to inform him about his life until they could figure out how to fix his memory. (Mako suggested they figure out what caused it and replicate it. Rei attempted to criticize his amnesia away. Hotaru mostly talked to him about how great Chibiusa was and confused him more. I’m not sure how Minako, Haruka, or Michiru tried, but Pluto had to walk away and laugh for a while. The Starlights just spent this whole thing flabbergasted, because they had heard a lot about Tuxedo Mask and how charismatic he was over the months and oddly enough that speech about cleaning the rotating hotdog cooker and how that meant you should always believe in yourself actually kind of worked.)

HEY YO KOTAETE MOON CALL IS BACK ONLINE
If you’ve never seen this, it is awesome. Terebikko was a short-lived toy that enabled you to play a limited sort of game via a VHS cassette and a special phone handset. What you have here is a short Sailor Moon episode with built-in multiple-choice quizzes that the original viewers could answer with their Terebikko phone. It was set up so that, if you chose the right answer, the tape would play you a congratulations message, but if you got it wrong, it would skip ahead to a correction. At the end you got your final score the same way (and if you sucked at it, Usagi sympathetically says, “The questions were hard, weren’t they?”
The questions are super basic, to give the youngest children a chance to get them right, but the whole thing is original animation with the real voice cast and it’s really good with fantastic character moments.
Can you imagine Usagi having that little faith in any of her girls? Let alone ALL her girls? MY MIND REFUSES TO EVEN ACCEPT THE POSSIBILITY. Even if Usagi could handle knowing that they’re calling out to her and suffering alone and trying to find her – WHICH SHE COULDN’T – the idea that she wouldn’t put her full and complete faith in them.
Thinking about it, I actually find this a bit frustrating and endemic to how I’ve felt about the Starlights’ entire arc. Once again, THIS COULD BE FASCINATING.
Consider Kakyuu, the center of the Starlights’ world, but her not feeling the same. Always aloof, always distant, always apart from them. Not even separated by duty or anything like that, she just straight doesn’t return their feelings. (You know how the Starlights have treated some of their fans? What if they were subconsciously acting like Kakyuu always did to them?)
This adds yet more dimension to the Starlights, and could’ve fueled yet more antagonism between them and our girls. The Starlights see how Usagi is with her Senshi, and it’s everything they ever wanted. And it’s so EFFORTLESS. They just love each other, all the time, no matter what. More, they enjoy each other’s company. Their friendship in sincere, their love is genuine, and the Starlights are SO ANGRY. Even the Outers, who Usagi butts heads with all the time, but she LOVES THEM, and they her.
Instead, unfortunately, I don’t get the sense that the narrative even knows how this is playing out. When Kakyuu says she heard them and apologized, Seiya is instantly like “OMG NO DON’T BLAME YOURSELF”, and it’s all played pretty straight. Seiya’s having a lot of flashbacks to Usagi right now, but I feel pretty confident it’s supposed to be highlighting their conflicted feelings (which I will personally continue to read as transference until proven otherwise) and nothing to do with any larger picture or commentary on their lives and their “job”.
And it’s just such a missed opportunity. Here we have probably the closest thing we’re going to see of someone in an Usagi-like role. The opportunity to use her and the Starlights to compare and contrast against the Senshi and explore what that means and how it affects the characters specifically is SO AMAZING. I love a lot about Stars, but I will remain disappointed that, to me, it completely squandered it’s actual main storyline.
OKAY WELL NOW YOU HAVE NO ONE TO BLAME BUT YOURSELF FOR THIS, JET:
The adoring eyes and wishing months. Always there. A child in linen and silk, charms in her hair, and Kakyuu offered so small of a smile. Her parents laughed to the comets they had commissioned as her guardians–”She’s a shy, don’t worry. It’ll take some time for her to warm up to you.”
The Starlights turned those soft eyes, those triple pleased grins, and then truly believed them. Alright, they loved her; they were made for her, they said. Always hers. No one elses. They would be her rug if she needed to step on something. Her knife if she needed something cut. Her maids when she woke from slumber and demanded warm milk. They were all for her. Colorful toy soldiers, stacked in a row neatly, ready to serve, forever to give.
In that instant, the child knew the Starlights would be no different than the sets of maids, knights, advisers, and subjects which knelt at her bed’s side and gave everything to her.
The only difference is that they were like birds–and she supposed their songs were good for something.
So, she asked them to sing. Follow her about, rest on their knees when she sits, take out their weapons when she commanded, and sing to her until she could not open her eyes. Entertain her like the rest of the toys her parents gave to her. It might be cruel to say, but even in their sweetest moments, the princess could not give her affection. They sang, one by one, and Kakyuu hid a humorless smile while her eyes saw through them. What could they give her when they acted so sweet to her?
Kakyuu knew how they saw her, after all. Their idol and worship. A piece art work to stare at and protect. The Starlights were always gentle to her; never harsh. Even when she broke their things and yelled in frustration, they only whispered to her softly and treated her as if she were a fragile flower in the wind; one push and all her petals would flutter away.
And she hated them for that! Oh, there were times when she loathed them! For she knew the Starlights loved each other and spoke to each other as if they were—real!
Healer growled at Fighter.
Maker rolled their eyes and criticized Healer.
Fight laughed; laughed in a way that was obnoxious and booming as thunder, real as can be.
They sat in a circle and spoke to each other as equals, smiles wide and opinions differing. Their eyes gleamed with annoyance but joy. They enjoyed each others company in a way Kakyuu would never know.
Yet when she approached them, the Starlight’s grins would turn to babying smiles and eyes filled with tears. When she would turn, they would chase her, reverence in their steps. When they would reach for her, she would slide away and never let them catch her.
If there was one true thing in Galaxia’s attacks, it was Kakyuu’s freedom. She ran, planet to planet, and the Starlights were not there. She could breathe and know they would not ask what she needed or if she was hurt.
She could fight and not be hindered by those who saw a doll in goddesses form.
And when they called out to her? Kakyuu did not heed their song–she rested in the arms for a small light, content in the lingering scent of the moon’s princess presence, and when she laughed, she knew she was around someone who was real.
omg kat YES
Yes yes yes yes yes yesssss
This is it exactly.
The Starlights and Kakyuu dynamic is already so different. She’s Their That Person, she’s their Princess. The first thing they did when seeing her?
Fell to their knees in allegiance. STAYED THERE throughout her entire exposition about whatever the hell “Sailor Wars” are. I mean they’re fucking BAWLING, and Kakyuu’s like “Oh yeah, hey, So I got a mission, hold up” and then ignores them to chat to Usagi.
Can you imagine our girls seeing each other again for the first time after painful, terrifying, heartbreaking years apart?
This was them after being separated for like AN HOUR.
Fall to their knees at Usagi’s feet? My god, you’d have to fucking break Rei’s legs first.
That’s the key. They are friends first, and that will always always ALWAYS come first.
Reading your ficlet brings home how painful and lonely it all is without that. For everyone, not just the Starlights, who at least have each other.
I loved it. I mean it’s painful and you’re awful, but thank you.
Do those pages flip back the other way half-way through, or is it just like one of those optical illusions?
Even if the enemies themselves aren't well fleshed out, I hope Jet will enjoy the bracelets in the manga. You've got the Animates seeking both power and survival, you've got Lethe and Mnemosyne's situation, hopefully there'll be plenty there to find interesting!
A SM fan: You have to like each canon holistically or not at all! You can't just pick and chose from each version, Sailor Moon is NOT a cafeteria.
