Post # 10: Podcast Recording

As you put together your podcast recording, think back to the podcast examples we’ve listened to throughout the semester: “24 Hours at the Golden Apple,” Serial, The Matt Jones podcast, “Spirit of Color.” What aspects of any of those podcasts are you emulating in your own, and why? What did you find effective about any of these podcasts that you hope to use in your project? What aspects of these podcasts do you hope to avoid and why?

Post # 9: Podcast “Soundscapes”

For this post, no writing required! For class on Thursday, you should visit your space/place and record about 2 minutes worth of background noise, or “soundscapes.” Chatter, doors slamming, birds chirping, construction noise... whatever is happening in and around your space. For best results, you should try to visit your space during “peak hours” when other people/activity will be there. 

Upload your recording to this post if possible (otherwise, bring to class on Thursday).

For this post, expand on today’s freewrite that got you thinking about your potential podcast audience. Who will care most about your topic? How will you appeal to them? Remember to try to avoid generalizations when identifying your audience. For example, “UK students” are comprised of many different kinds of people.

In your response to a classmate, offer suggestions to help them think more critically about their audience. If you are a member of the target audience, does their plan to appeal to you sound like a good one? Why or why not?

Post # 4: Essay topic

After the brainstorming you did in class today, take a look at your notes and narrow down your ideas to choose an essay topic. What space/place on campus or in Lexington are you most interested in exploring further? Why are you interested in this topic? What fruitful questions can you ask about this space/place as you begin your exploration? Keep in mind that this is the topic you will hopefully stick with for the rest of the semester, so try to make it one you can get really invested in! (Also be sure to choose a space/place that you’ll be able to visit and observe-- therefore, a sorority/fraternity house you don’t belong to, a dorm you don’t live in, Rupp Arena’s basketball court, etc. might be fun, but are not great ideas for this assignment.)

In your response to a classmate’s post (due Friday by 12:30 pm), try to offer helpful suggestions for questions, research, and varying perspectives. How do you look at the topic differently than they seem to be doing?

Hi, all! I am excited to be your WRD instructor this fall and know that we will have a great time and learn a lot together. As we begin, reflect on our class discussion of space and place, and relate it specifically to UK. What are your thoughts on space/place and community here? Why did you choose to come to UK? What does it mean to you as a space or place at this juncture? Do you have any history with UK? What are your first impressions as a student here?
