hello anon and apologies for promptly dropping off of the face of the earth after promising to reply to this. in the interest of trying to be useful, i’m going to dash something off-the-cuff, but i hope it helps! i think this idea is already routinely demonstrable in the text, but tamsyn muir was also kind enough to explicitly spell some of this out in this lovely interview: “That said, the God of the Locked Tomb IS a man; he IS the Father and the Teacher; it’s an inherently masc role played by someone who has an uneasy relationship himself to playing a Biblical patriarch. John falls back on hierarchies and roles because they’re familiar even when he’s struggling not to.” one of the ways this is dramatized in the text is, y'know, john shoving some of the earth’s soul into a barbie. pygmalion the earth into perhaps the most iconic form of white femininity. it’s a move that may be complicated by details such as a) john’s indigeneity and b) the queerness implicated in john preferring barbie to any of his more ‘masculine’ toys, but there’s a lot to interrogate here on how john’s proximity to systemic oppression (across various lines) is retained and the ways in which they’re replicated despite his intentions, or the ways they come through even when certain axes of oppression (gender, race) operate differently in the nine houses than on contemporary earth, or what john prioritizes above altering these systems. so on one hand, thinking about john’s affinity to tall blondes might lead you there. however, because the 6ft tall blonde is not just alecto but is, in fact, an enduring role, now you can open up some more questions. for me, these questions might look like: what is the relationship between this role and john and john’s empire?

Perhaps this is obvious, but I’m pretty sure the six-foot-tall blond is a “guardian angel”. Beyond the fact that European religious art often depicts angels as statuesque blonds, AL is literally described as John’s “guardian” in the Dramatis Personae of HtN. Also, in NtN John describes making her body look like “a Christmas-tree fairy”* or “a Renaissance angel”, so I’d say Tamsyn is actually lamp-shading it pretty thoroughly.

Also, when Ianthe is considering saving Jod or saving Augustine from the stoma tongues, she is described using Angel imagery: “High above the nest of tongues, Ianthe was poised as though flying—fluttering white flimsy in the heart of that vortex”. The tongues are also described as “demoniacal” shortly afterwards, and then we have “If Augustine gave God a last good shove down into Hell, and then Ianthe pulled him free of the tongues, they could probably both escape” a paragraph later. So we have one blond “guardian angel” rebelling against God, trying to wrestle him into “Hell” and ultimately being dragged down himself, while his future replacement rescues (guards) God from the same fate. So it seems like we have a consistent thematic through-line tying all three of them to “angelic guardian” (even though none of them have personalities that can reasonably be described as “angelic”, at least in the way the word is typically meant).

*Side note: while I’m not sure how reliable this site is as a source, it claims that Christmas tree fairies are associated with: (1) good luck to new babies, (2) fertility, (3) “the Angel that announced the fore coming [sic] and birth of Jesus”, and (4) extinguishing/protecting against fire–appropriate given what we now know about Grand Lysis and John’s fear that if he fully devoured the World-soul he would combust. So we have connections to angels and new birth while John is causing the rebirth of the world-soul into the body of the 6-foot-tall blond, who is also “his Adam” with which he “begot necromantic humanity”. The site also claimed that in German folklore tradition fairies don’t like getting wet, which when combined with Nona’s love of water (and its importance in helping her regulate her mood) further emphasizes the unsuitability of John’s choice of body for her.
