Shout out to the one person in our theater who audibly said "DAMMIT" when Orpheus turned around
The descent into the devastating and inescapable logic of “Why We Build the Wall” throughout the song will never not haunt me.
Why do we build the wall? We build the wall to keep us free. How does the wall keep us free? The wall keeps out the enemy. What do we call the enemy? The enemy is poverty. What do we have that they should want? We have a wall to work upon.
Like the show itself, the logic of the wall is cyclical, so it’s inescapable. The wall is literal. The wall is figurative. We create the wall ourselves when we value profit over life. And at the end of the day, after all that work, and all of that time spent disparaging the “have nots,” the only thing you have left is the very wall you are building, separating you from your fellow man.
"Road to Hell" // "Gone, I'm Gone" // "Road to Hell (Reprise)"
cause heres the thing to know how it ends & still begin to sing it again as if it might turn out this time
so i just watched the hadestown proshot and holy fucking shit i truly think that that is the best proshot i have ever seen so here are some specific things i really loved
amber gray's expressions just wow. she is so expressive and such a phenomenal actress
the way the fates appeared behind orpheus during wait for me
how every time during group numbers the camera focused on a certain person you could hear their vocals more clearly than everyone else
all of the fates
wait for me reprise in 4k with peak sound holy shit eva noblezada i love you so much
the cracking noises during wait for me when the walls opened up
the shots from above/below the stage
how during doubt comes in all the shots were primarily close ups of orpheus so it was hard to tell where eurydice was
one of the people in my theater shouting "NO" when orpheus turned around
literally so many more things i could talk about this proshot for ages
please i beg if you have not/are not intending on seeing it to watch it it is a masterpiece
something i adore about hadestown is that it still meant something, y'know what i mean? like okay, no orpheus's song did not convince hades to give up his empire. hades' love for persephone isn't enough to deconstruct the machine he's built and has convinced himself that he needs in order to protect what he has. but he let them go. he saw the love eurydice and orpheus had for one another and it convinced him to let them try. orpheus may have turned around but they still walked, they almost made it. doubt set it but they were right there. that's further than anyone else can say. nobody else had made it that far. who's to say someone else can't make it a few steps further? persephone is able to leave the underworld and go home again when she needs to. spring has come again, if we're lucky autumn just might too. will this change be permanent? we don't know. but it's something. it doesn't knock down the wall but it's one brick out of it. and that means something. it wasn't all for nothing. it's a crack in the wall. there's a reason we keep singing this old song.
Every time I have seen Hadestown - on stage or in the movie theater - people gasp when Orpheus turns around. I just love how it's so old and yet everyone is still always hoping that this time
a tragic theme i eat up every single time is hoping against hope and coming back to fight even if you know you'll lose - there are no narratives that make me feel more connected and human than those ones:
it's a sad song, but we sing it anyway. cause here's the thing, to know how it ends, and still begin to sing it again.... as if it might turn out this time. i learned that from a friend of mine
and
some birds sing when the sun shines bright, our praise is not for them. but the ones who sing in the dead of night. we raise our cups to them.
and
the hardest thing in this world, is to live in it
and
here's the thing, when it's something that really matters, they fight. i mean, they're lame morons for fighting but they do. they never quit. so i guess i will keep fighting too
and
name one hero who was happy-you can't-i'll tell you a secret... i'm gonna be the first
and
people can die, so at least i want people i know to have a proper death
and
even if you're fake my feelings for you are real
and
we can't change what fate has in store for us, but we don't have to face it alone
and
i still want to use the last chance to go back to the beginning and save you
and and and-
this was my first time seeing or even listening to hadestown today seeing the pro shot in theaters. and i’m just in awe at the fact that they made the stage itself into a literal representation of the holes that were left when certain events happened.
like when persephone was first called back into the underworld. there’s almost 10 minutes before the innermost circle comes back up. so there is both the metaphorical and literal representation of the loss of her presence. the actors cannot walk there. the Foundation Is Missing. much like how the characters are starving. they can’t take care of their base needs without the prosperity persephone brings.
later when eurydice takes hades deal to go to the underworld. she leaves by the same inner circle descending. it does not return until after orpheus has his scene where he realizes what happened. the hole is his heart left my eurydice literally represented by where he cannot walk.
i’m sure someone’s brought this up before and in more detail but as my first time watching this i was just in awe of all the meticulous details like this
I just feel like we're not talking enough about the pro-labor, pro-union, themes in Hadestown. My boy Orpheus is literally wearing a red bandana. He said you simply have to stand up, together, even when it's terrifying and you have never done it before. There are more of us than them. Even if it seems impossible we have hope, because we are standing in solidarity. You can only make demands of gods if you have your union behind you. And then you realise they aren't gods, and you can bargain.
the thing about orpheus is that he doesn't turn because he loves eurydice. he turns because paradoxically he is afraid to lose her. hes turned many times and found people have disappeared when he wasn't looking (his mother, persephone in act 1, eurydice in act 1). he loves eurydice, but by act 2 he's seen the way the world is. he has to turn. one last look is better than never seeing her again. hadestown isn't about death, its about self destruction and how grief paints your actions in the present.
Why haven't you left yet? This is no place for people with a conscience.
