Julieta pressed her face into her hands and cried, irrevocably shaken. Her mamá would be wondering, soon, where she was, why she’d packed up her table and come home early. She wasn’t sure she had the heart to tell her.

Her door opened with little pretense (or if there was, she didn’t notice), and her head shot up, wiping frantically at her tears with shaking hands.

“What?” She croaked, less nice than she meant to be, dropping the façade of gentleness in favor of pure emotion.

Bianca wandered down the streets of a town not so familiar to her as her own, swinging her umbrella idly and stopping only to trip, or to kneel, inspecting a new rock or flower (of which there were surprisingly many, for some place she was not sure flowers could grow). One particularly nasty fall had her looking up to see a fat little creature, watching her with less fear than she usually expected from a rodent.

“Rato,” she cooed, and she held her hand out for the tiny thing to sniff, when one of her cats got too close, and scared it off. That only prompted her colony to chase after the poor thing, and she pushed herself up as quick as possible, darting after the dozen or so lithe, furry bodies.

“Oye!” She yelped indignantly, taking extra care to watch where she stepped as the ground threatened to crack under her feet. “I raised you all to be polite!” And in her hurry, she bumped into someone, stumbling backwards and onto the butt of her already horribly dirty dress. It seemed all her cats stopped too, which was, at least, one less thing to worry about. “Lo siento,” she squeaked immediately, plastering an apologetic smile onto her face. “My friends were chasing a rat, and I thought that was so unfair, that’s not even a real fight— and I feed them anyway, they were just being mean!”

Julieta, brace yourself. A child (no older than maybe 8) runs full speed at the poor woman, with what is at least 10 black cats following lazily behind her. She trips, face first, and skids in the dirt. A few cats nudge her with their little pink noses. She spits out a mouthful of dust and gets back up.

After a few steps, she trips again.

This happens a handful of times before she is in front of Julieta, sputtering a bit of blood from what seems to be a combined nosebleed and split lip. It wouldn’t be surprising if her nose was broken. Her powder blue dress is caked in dirt, and both her knees are scraped and heftily bruised, but she doesn’t seem to notice anything out of the ordinary.

“Hi! You’re pretty. And I like your dress. Want to meet my cats?”

Pepa watches her precious Camilo with an adoring smile. Oh, she just loves to see all of the different forms her son can take on. It’s recent, their gift, and they’re still figuring it all out.

A breathy laugh escapes when the crown won’t come off. It seems they just discovered one of Camilo’s limitations.

“A valiant effort, Camilito,” she says softly, reaching over to stroke her son’s cheeks, and then pepper kisses across his face.

They huff out a long, frustrated breath, pouting rather convincingly. They really wanted to let their mami be a princess too!

There’s hardly a moment to worry about it, though, before her hands are stroking soft across his chubby cheeks, and she’s smothering him with motherly kisses.

“Hey!” He squeals, but he falls easily into her arms, the shift of the crown melting back into his head. It’s been kinda scary being in his own room, so getting extra love from his mami is just compensation.

Gasp! A princess without her crown, that seems impossible to fix. Well, maybe..

“Wait, wait, wait,” a little finger comes up in a universal gesture of ‘just a second,’ and soft features scrunch together in obvious concentration. They’re still getting ahold of the whole Gift thing; sometimes it doesn’t want to work at all, and sometimes it happens without them noticing.

They shift a crown onto their head with some effort, and grasp it with both hands, trying to yank it off. It’s effectively a part of them, so it’s definitely not coming off, but they’re gonna keep trying.

Oh, there’s a Toñito, tugging gently at Pepa’s skirt with one hand. The other hand is holding something (it’s a piece of paper, a picture probably) quite obviously behind his back. A coati has clever little hands on his wrist, trying to pry the picture away from him.

 “Hey,” he murmurs, wiggling his hand behind him. “That’s not for you!” When the little guy runs off, his smile doubles in size. The image is safe.

“I got you something.” Pause. “..two things!”
