LADYSTUCK REMIX is a female character-centered remix challenge in the Homestuck fandom, running this June and July. Participants will remix one work (fic or art) of another person’s, and have someone remix one of theirs in turn. 

What is a remix, exactly? Think of it like, well, a remix, or a cover song: taking someone else’s material, and reworking it in your own way. Remixes may change the style, tone, setting, genre, scope, or structure of the original–or any combination of the above. If that sounds like fun to you, come play with us! A new fanart exchange is starting up! And here’s another in progress!

I am reblogging this post in part because I saw some people discussing that exchange wondering if this exchange was coming back. And... no, sorry, not unless someone takes it over. I had fun running it but it ended up being a bit more effort than my health-limited energy levels could handle. Sorry I didn’t make that clear, I thought I had but it seems I forgot!

This has been a fantastic experience, thank you all for your enthusiasm, patience, and glorious art. All the artists are cool with being remixed and tumblr and dreamwidth submissions are open, so if you feel inspired to create more remixes, go do it! Then post them (or links to them) here! This especially applies to anyone who wants to do a remix but didn't get to sign up for the exchange

I’m still deciding if I want to run it again next year, I’m also open to someone else taking over. But is there anything you’d want different? Specifically: how do people feel about explicitely encouraging remixes of original art? Would you rather it was centered somewhere else? (dreamwidth or Ao3?)

And if anyone else is considering running a little exchange themselves I say DO IT. I’d never run an exchange before and it was so rewarding seeing my idea come to life. Big thanks to the anons at the exchanges thread atfailfandomanon for encouragement and ideas, especially any of you who signed up :)

Artist Notes: I love reflectedeve's drawing and really wanted to do the Desert Bluffs version. Danny Pudi as Cecil/Kevin, oh yes - such a brilliant idea. This was done in india ink by dip pen on tracing paper, idek, and assaulted with gouache and copious water and food colouring, mangled and roughed up some, scanned, and then overprocessed in photoshop. Adventure! I had this song stuck in my head THE ENTIRE TIME I WAS DRAWING THIS.

A robot is looking back. Past the robot is a lab with other tanks containing Thor and Natasha, with a robot welding another robot partly made up to look like Tony. Original work: Sensory Overload(picture 2) by leperu Artist Notes: I COMPLETELY MISSED that the watching figure was Iron Man and thought it was a robot. So. Um. This is an AU? Let's say they're robots Tony made based on his own personality. Attempting to replicate all the details of metal parts and tubing etc made me admire leperu's skill as an artist even more. And then I simplified everything ;)

Rating: Gen Content Notes: My husband says "vagina dentata" but my husband should not be listened to. Choose not to warn.  Description: Various sealife circling a bait, including a thing that escaped from Prometheus. Original work: Gone Fishin by sqbr Artist Notes: YOLO, basically? I saw this funny and adorable and a teensy bit spooky piece of (fan?)art - it was done after a prompt so it qualified to me! - and then I started thinking about it, and by the time it dawned on me that I haven't a faintest clue what fandom it could be, I had already completed it. So, uh, I fail at fanart remixes? But I refuse to go with that because I hadn't drawn by hand, in ink on paper, in so long that the clips on my easel honest-to-god rusted, and this wonderful underwater scene brought me back to life. So THANK YOU. As for the remixing, I decided to amp the horror/scifi feel and go with a stylised, poster-like design. Any extra tags: drums, drums in the deep

Her torso, naked except for a gold collar, dissolves into feathers. She has wings made of fractals. Original work: Delerium by whatistigerbalm Artist Notes: I was very inspired by her having wings, and all the numbers looking like equations, though I realised after I got started it was probably a reference to medicine/drugs. YOU GOT MATHS ANYWAY :) Specifically fractals, since they are pretty and chaotic but have their own internal logic. I really like the idea of her as a harpy but she ended up looking more angelic, and I couldn't quite capture her expression.

Posting starts today! (...ish)

I have set up the queue set to start on "Sunday", not sure if that's in my timezone (eg now) or US time, I guess we'll see ;) 

Everyone had gotten back to me with art or an ETA, hurrah! The remixes are all AMAZING, I had to stop myself adding flailing squee to the posts as I made them. You guys are so great.

If you want to create treats for anyone then you can submit them pretty much whenever. Once the primary remixes have all been posted I'll probably open up submissions so you don't have to wait for me to post for you.

Submission Information

EMAIL ME YOUR ART BY THE 20TH OF SEPTEMBER.

Your submission should take the form:

[Image/Thumbnail as an attachment: this is what will be posted to tumblr] Remix: [Name of remix] by [your name] (can be links) Fandom: Characters/Pairing: Rating: Content Notes: Any kinks or common triggers you think people will want to be aware of one way or another. "Choose not to warn" is also acceptable. Description: Original work: [Link to original art] by [original artist’s name] Artist Notes: Any extra tags you want me to add on tumblr. By default I will tag for the character names, fandom, and artist names as given.

IF YOU ONLY GIVE A THUMBNAIL then remember to give a link to your full size art or noone will see it ;) You will have to host it yourself, this option is basically just for people who don't want their full size art on tumblr. 

I will be posting a summary of all the art to the dreamwidth community. I was going to have people submit posts to the tumblr community but it was too annoying.

(nb I wrote my remixes up to make sure everything was in order and both my author's notes ended up being me trying not to wallow in "I AM NOT WORTHY" and apologising for not realising I'd misunderstood the original art until after the remix was done /o\ HOPE YOU ARE ALL GOING WELL and thanks to everyone who's checked in)

Assignments are out!!

FELLOW REMIXERS START YOUR ART ENGINES. I just sent out all the assignments!!!

I hope you all find some really inspiring fanart and have fun creating your remixes. For me it was like "Nope, nope, maybe, oh god these are all great but I have no idea what to do with them, nope, nope, YESSS THAT ONE."

If you get stuck or have any other issues (like your assignment email not showing up!) give me a bell, I am happy to brainstorm etc.

Now some reminders:

Check in is September 10 Submissions are due September 20!

You can remix any complete art by your assigned artist, aside from collaborative works and any remixed art they’ve made previously. Any fandom is ok, including crossovers. The remix should be inspired by the chosen piece of art, exploring the same general subject in a different way. You have to keep the basic premise, canon(s), and pairing(s) the same, but do not necesarily have to depict any pairings or even any characters.

Also: Unfortunately the only way I could assign everyone an artist was to assign myself twice. I feel a bit bad about getting two pieces of art, but I will also be drawing two which hopefully balances things out.
