He was Fred Weasley. The Fred Weasley. Nothing touched him. He was strong and in control of his emotions at all times.

He'd walked off his burning anger, and now, all that was left was confusion and frustration. Why was everyone so adamant that he was in love with Y/N? It made no sense. He barely thought of her anymore.
I feel the winter come, his icy sinews
Now in the fire light, the case continues
Another night in court, the same old trial
The same old questions asked, the same denial
No, he did not love her. Not one bit. Anyone who thought otherwise was a fool.
The shadows closely run, like jury members
I look for answers in the fire's embers
Why was I missing then that whole December?
I give my usual line, "I don't remember"

Fred's world tilted sideways as the truth he'd denied for so long suddenly demanded it's due. He knew, now, what he had to do and he couldn't waste one second.

Out of breath and close to collapsing, Fred pounded on Y/N's door. The look of complete and utter surprise on her face was so adorable and would've made him chuckle if he wasn't gasping for air.
"Y/N....sorry to show up....like this. But I.... just realized... something," Fred managed. "I love you...I've loved you since the beginning... since you saved me and George from Filch.... and I've been so stupid and mean.... but hope you can forgive me and... maybe love me back."
Y/N stared at him for a few seconds, her eyes wide. Then, without a word, she stepped back, opening the door further to reveal Angelina sitting on the sofa.

Three weeks.
Three weeks had passed since they'd last spoke. Three weeks since Y/N had even acknowledged his presence.
Fred had not thought it possible to miss someone so much. She haunted his thoughts and his dreams relentlessly. And even though he no longer tried talking to her, he'd find himself sneaking peeks at her during mealtimes and in potions class or scanning the hallways for a momentary glimpse of her.
It was driving him crazy.
"I need to do something," Fred mumbled while he and George headed to lunch. "Something grand."
"Need to do something about what?"
"Y/N," Fred sighed. "I need to get her back, but she won't even look at me."
"Ah," George replied. He should've known. His poor brother had been distracted and depressed ever since Y/N had broken up with him. "What did you have in mind?"
"No clue," he answered. "But it's got to be something big and unique and special. Something that says I'm sorry, and I still love her."
George nodded. "Nothing comes to mind at the moment. But I'll help you brainstorm tonight after dinner."
"Thanks, mate," Fred replied. "That'd be great. Godric knows I need all the help I can get."

Y/N's POV
Y/N watched Fred out of the corner of her eye. He and George had just entered the Great Hall. Merlin, she missed him. She hated herself for missing him so much.
"Just go talk to him," Beth whispered.
Y/N shook her head. "No."
"It's obvious that you miss him."
"Just because I miss somebody doesn't mean I should let them back into my life," Y/N huffed. "I've told you he said."
"Yes, you did," Beth responded. "And I told you that you were overreacting."
"I'm not overreacting!" Y/N asserted louder than she intended, causing quite a few faces to turn her way. Much to her relief, she was too far away for her voice to reach the ears of a certain redhead.
"Fine, suit yourself," her friend rolled her eyes and went back to eating her lunch.
Y/N sighed. She'd told her best mates about what Fred had said and they all told her the same thing.
"You're overreacting."
"You let your emotions control you."
"You really should talk to him."

Would they still say the same, she wondered, if they knew about her talk with Snape? She hadn't told anyone about that conversation. Not because she thought it should be particularly secret, but because deep down, she knew they would still say the same thing. Then she'd have to admit Snape was wrong and, therefore, she was wrong. And she wasn't ready to admit that she'd fucked up. That she'd been stupid idiot.
Snape was quite pleased with himself. He'd succeeded in saving his star pupil from making a terrible mistake. Sure, she was sad, and that was regrettable. But that was to be expected in these situations, and besides, Y/N would be over the dim-witted dolt in no time.
"It will soon be summer break," he said simply.
It was true that he always looked forward to the summer and two months of freedom from the feckless peanut gallery. But that was only part of the reason for his uncharacteristic good mood.
"Mmph," McGonagall watched her usually somber colleague for a moment more, certain he must've slipped and hit his head recently.

Fred's POV
It was well past midnight when Fred threw his hands in the air. "This is hopeless. Everything's been so overdone."
George sighed and flopped back on his bed. Every suggestion he'd come up with, Fred had shot down. "So what? Just pick one and put your Fred Weasley flair to it. You'll do great."
"Or I could just give up."
"Or you just sing her song." The groggy voice of his other roommate Lee drifted across the room.
"What?" Fred stared at his friend.
"You have a decent singing voice," Lee explained. "Sing her a song."
Fred looked at George, who only shrugged. "Sounds good to me."
A smile broke out across Fred's face. "Alright, that's what I'll do! Ok so the first thing we need to do - "
"Is go to sleep!" George and Lee said simultaneously.
"We can work out the details tomorrow after we've had some sleep," George added with a yawn.
"Oh, yeah, right. Good idea," Fred replied with a sheepish grin.

Y/N's POV
As Y/N entered the Great Hall for dinner, her eyes flickered over instinctively to the spot where Fred usually sat, surprised to find that neither he nor George were there. She quickly scanned the room, thinking they were maybe seated elsewhere for some reason.
There was no sign of them anywhere. Worry settled like a stone in the pit of her stomach. They never missed a meal. Ever. Y/N chewed her bottom lip, her mind racing through all the different reasons they might be absent. Then, giving their vacant spot one final glance, she sat down and attempted to eat.
"I think I'm going to call it an early night," Y/N told her friends. "I don't much of an appetite tonight."
Ignoring their protests, Y/N stood to go and froze at the sound of music. She looked around, trying to find the source, when suddenly the soft melody rose to fill every corner of the Great Hall, silencing everyone, even the teachers.
It was only then that Y/N saw members of the orchestra filing into the hall, wide grins on every single face.
And then she heard him.
Fred.
Was he... singing?
Suddenly, he leaped up onto the far end of the Gryffindor table, his eyes locked on her as he sung...

Y/N nodded, barely able to see through the tears blurring her vision. "Yes! Yes, of course I will!"

"I just got you back, and now you're going away," Fred pouted.
"It just two weeks," Y/N said, trying to convince herself just as much as her boyfriend. "We can survive two weeks."
"Two weeks is forever."
"It's fourteen days," she corrected.
"That's even longer."
Y/N giggled and stood on her tiptoes to give him a peck on the nose.
"Oi Fred!" George's voice interrupted, reverberating above the hubbub of the train station. "You're gonna make her late for her cousin's wedding."
Fred shot him the bird, causing his twin to burst out with a loud guffaw, startling a few passers-by.
"It's still a week away," Fred whined, turning back to Y/N.
"I'll write you every day," she promised.
"And I'll write you back even more."
Y/N smiled. "I love you, Fred Weasley."
"I love you too," he said, leaning in for a kiss, as an impish grin spread across his face. "Now, my sweet, let's make everyone jealous."

Snape's POV
Snape had never really considered himself the fatherly type. Even in the days when he still entertained the possibility of marriage, the idea of raising a child never appealed to him. Snape knew he was too selfish and easily vexed to be a suitable parent. He was, as much as he hated to admit it, too much like his worthless bastard of a father in that regard.
And yet, as he watched Y/N grow closer to the Weasley boy, a sort of protective paternal instinct rose up within him. He just couldn't see how this situation could end well, and he wasn't about to sit idly by and watch Y/N throw away a promising future for the likes of Fred Weasley.

Y/N's POV
Y/N wrapped her cloak tighter around her as she descended the stairs to the dungeon. She should've layered up more before coming down here, she thought with a huff. One would think that with the combined magic of the headmaster and all the teachers, something could be done about these damned drafts in the hallways. But, no such luck. Maybe it was some sort of character building nonsense or some other similar bullshit. With a long sigh, she rounded the last set of stairs, trying to exhale all her frustration before her meeting with Professor Snape.
Of all days, Fred picked this one to be an absolute shit. He'd been waiting for her just outside the door of her Ancient Runes class. "Hey, love," he leaned down for a kiss. "I thought maybe we could take a walk before dinner. It's starting to snow."
Y/N smiled. "I'd love to," she replied. "But I've got my meeting with Snape in about fifteen minutes."
"Oh," Fred muttered, looking a away.
"I'll try to cut it short," she reached out, placing her hand on his arm. "I really would love to take a walk with you."
"I don't know why you're going at all," he spat.
The vehemence in his voice caused Y/N to step back. "We've talked about this before. I want to be a Potions Master and, like it or not, Snape is my mentor. Besides, even if I canceled, I still have to return his book."
"Oh yeah, his precious little book from his precious little collection," he mocked.
Y/N stared at him in shock. "What the hell is wrong with you?"
"Oh, I don't know, maybe it's that my girlfriend is choosing to go play teacher's pet instead of spending the afternoon with me."
Her gaze hardened as any sympathy she had flew out the window. "Never mind," Y/N spat back. "Forget me trying to get out early. If you're going to insult me for actually taking school seriously and pursuing my passion then you can fuck right off!" And with that, she turned on her heel and stomped away.

Fred's POV
Regret slammed into him as soon as she disappeared around the corner. This was not how things were supposed to go.
All he wanted was to spend some time with Y/N and forget about his shitty afternoon.
His day had started out great. But then, he and George got into an argument over the best way to tackle the problem they were having with their newest invention. They didn't argue often, and today's disagreement wasn't really that bad. They'd actually already worked things out. But it didn’t matter. Their arguments always left Fred feeling a little out of sorts and sad. It wasn't something he'd ever admitted to anyone, least of all himself.
Usually, to clear his head, he'd go for a walk. But now, with Y/N in his life, he sought her out instead, craving her gentle, calming presence. The world never felt more right than when she was by his side.
Except he'd fucked up. He'd forgotten she had her monthly meeting with Snape today. It was the final blow. So, of course, he had to act like a selfish prick.
Godric, I'm such an fucking idiot.
Fred kicked at a loose stone on the floor, debating what to do next. His gut told him not to run after her, that'd only make things worse. She needed to cool down first. But afterward, that should be better. Shouldn't it? Of course, it would be better, he reasoned. Followed the path Y/N had just taken. Fred decided he'd wait for her at the top of the stairs leading down to the dungeon, and when she got out, he'd apologize and make things right again.

Snape's POV
Snape raised an eyebrow as he watched Y/N stomp into his office, slamming the door shut behind her and dropping her backpack on the floor with a loud thud.
"Something troubling you?" He asked with a bemused air.
"What?" Y/N looked surprised, as if she'd just realized he was sitting there. "No, no - I'm fine."
Snape eyed her a few seconds before speaking again. "Very well," he said and leaned forward to replace the book she'd borrowed with a new one. He was pretty certain she wasn't, as she put it, fine, and wondered if her foul mood had something to do with the Weasley boy. He decided to broach that very subject after their book discussion.
"Shall we begin?" He asked.
Y/N nodded and pulled out her list of questions.
Throughout their conversation, he watched Y/N carefully. Assessing her behavior. He noted that she'd kept her mind on track despite being obviously upset.
Excellent discipline, Snape thought. That should make the next discussion more productive.
"Before you go, Miss Y/L N, I would like to speak to you about your future as it pertains to your career path," he began.
Y/N stopped packing up her backpack and looked up at him. "Of course, professor." She sat back down, folding her hands neatly in her lap.
"You still wish to become a Potions Master, yes?" He asked.
"Yes, of course."
"Good," he stood and paced the room. "As you are well aware, Potions requires steadfast study and a disciplined mind. It is important to stay focused. Trivial social distractions can lower the quality of your work."
Y/N gave him a puzzled look. "Trivial social distractions? Forgive me, sir, if I've misunderstood. But it sounds like you're saying I should have no life outside of my potion studies."
"Far from it, Miss Y/L/N," Snape returned to his seat. "But you should be select with who you devote your free time to. Surround yourself with people of like mind who understand and support your endeavors rather than those who seek to pull you away from your objective."
Y/N remained silent for a few long moments. Snape could almost hear the gears turning in her head. "I - I understand, professor," she said finally.
"Very good," Snape replied. "Now, go and enjoy the rest of your day."
Y/N simply nodded and hurried out of his office.
Snape leaned back with a self-satisfied grin, convinced that his message had hit home.

Y/N hurried out of Snape's office, holding back the tears that threatened to spill over. How could she have been so stupid? Letting herself get pulled in by a pretty face. The professor was right. She needed to surround herself with people who supported her. She thought Fred did, but she was wrong. He'd shown his true colors today.
Confused and still angry, Y/N failed to notice the figure leaning against the wall at the top of the stairs.
"Y/N!" A voice called after her.
"Fred?" She turned around, surprised. "What are you doing here?"
"I came to apologize," he began, but then saw her wet, red-rimmed eyes. "You're crying, love. What happened? Did Snape say something to upset you?"
Y/N rolled her eyes. Was Fred really that dense? Or was he too junvenile to take responsibility for his own behavior?
"No, Fred. It wasn't Snape that upset me," she sneered. "But he did open my eyes."
"Opened your eyes," Fred's eyebrows scrunched together. "What the hell does that mean?"
"It means I've been a fool, thinking you actually cared about me or anything that's important to me."
"What? How could you think that? I do care," Fred entreated. "That's why I'm here. Because I care so much."
"For now," Y/N scoffed. "But what happens the next time you want me to take a walk and I need to focus on my studies?"
She started to walk away, but he stepped in front of her. "Y/N, baby, please. Just listen," he begged. "I was upset and stupid, and it won't happen again."
"I know it won't." Y/N's gaze went as cold as ice. "Because we're done, Fred Weasley. This relationship is over."

Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees. George had been so busy trying to decide the best way to approach Y/N that he didn't notice her frequent glances in his direction.
George captivated her. In the first moment they met, his eyes drew her to him. There was just something about the way he looked at her. As if she were the center of the universe. No one had ever looked at her that way, and Y/N didn't know if anyone ever would again. She needed to know who this guy was, who gazed at her as if she hung the moon.
"Shall we adjorn to the living room?" Mr. Weasley proposed once dinner was cleared away.
Y/N looked George's way, hoping to catch his eye, but he was already heading out of the kitchen. No matter, she thought, with a little luck, she could claim a spot beside him and strike up a conversation.
Unfortunately, luck was not on her side today.
"C'mon, sit with me and Percy," Penelope linked arms with Y/N. "Arthur's going to do his annual reading of A Christmas Carol."
"Oh, that sounds fun," Y/N smiled. Her eyes darted over to where George was sitting, then quickly back to her friend.
"It is," Penny said. "He does all the different voices and everything."
"Yeah?" Y/N gave a half nod as she let herself be pulled to the complete opposite side of the room from where she wanted to be.

George shuffled over to the sofa where his twin and Angie sat. There was no point in trying to talk to Y/N. She'd not looked his way once since their introduction. So, obviously, she wasn't interested, and why would she be? It's not like he made a memorable first impression. Or if he did, he came off as Mr. Blithering Idiot.
"What are you doing over here?" Fred asked when his twin flopped down beside him.
"What do you mean? Where else am I supposed to be?"
"Oh, I don't know," Fred replied. "Maybe over there wooing your girl."
George scoffed. "She's not my girl, and besides, she's barely looked in my direction since we met."
"Did you go blind recently, George?" Angie laughed.
"Uh. No--why?"
"Because she's been sneaking peeks at you all through dinner. You can't tell me you didn't notice."
George rolled his eyes. "I didn't notice because it didn't happen."
Angie's eyebrows shot up, and she put her hands on her hips. "Are you calling me a liar?"
"What? No! I-I'm just saying I don't think--," the younger twins' words trailed off.
"You don't think what?" Fred's girlfriend still had her hands resting on her hips.
George looked at Fred. "Don't look at me, little brother." Fred raised his hands in the air. "You got yourself into this."
"Fine," George snapped. "If she was looking at me, it certainly isn't because she likes me. Ok? Now, can you just let it go?"
Angie looked at Fred, confusion clear on her face. Fred gave the faintest shake of his head. She glanced over at George one last time before rolling her eyes and sitting back with a huff.
George stared straight ahead, eyes focused intently on anything but Y/N.

The crackling fire and twinkling lights on the tree made for the perfect backdrop to Arthur's annual reading of A Christmas Carol. It was an idyllic scene straight out of a Hallmark greetings card and one that should've warmed Y/N to her very core. But, it was the stark, cold winter storm that sank into her bones instead. Being surrounded by all the happy couples made her feel more alone than being by herself ever could. She should've just stayed at home, she thought, and raised her eyes once more toward the red-haired boy across the room, who seemed to look everywhere but at her.
The younger twin picked at a loose thread on his sweater. Ever since he was a child, this was George's favorite part of Christmas Eve. With his family gathered close together while his dad read, loneliness couldn't touch him. Or so he'd thought. But, tonight had proven him wrong, and all he wanted to do was to go crawl into bed and lose himself in dreams or, better yet, oblivion.
"Look up." His twin hissed while jabbing his bony elbow into George's ribs.
"What?" He seethed, glaring at Fred.
"Not me dumbass. At her."
George sighed and turned, finding himself suddenly staring straight into Y/N's eyes.
His heart skipped a beat as time slowed to a crawl.

You were so focused on cooking that you didn't hear George sneak up behind you until he wrapped one arm around your waist and used the other to grab the bottle of olive oil from the top shelf that you could more than easily reach.
"You know I can it get myself," you teased.
George shrugged. "I know, but it always makes you smile. And I love when you smile," he said as he began to nibble on your ear. "Besides, it's also a great way to get you all hot and bothered."
You rolled your eyes but still leaned into his soft kisses that were now trailing down your neck. "Georgie, our dinner guests will be here any minute," you reminded him.
"No fair. You never let me any fun," he whined, just before he blew a raspberry on your cheek, making you scream.

Tonight was important. You were having several entrepreneurs over to dinner to discuss the possibility of expanding Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes stores to other countries.
But before business, there was always small talk. And if there was ever an opportunity for George to tell the story of how the two of you met, he was going to take it. You knew tonight would be no different. Even Fred, who used to roll his eyes every time his twin would tell the story, now encouraged him because no matter how curmudgeon or cynical the listener might be, the tale always managed to charm them. It was a great way to break the ice with potential business partners and new clients.
"I swear, if my wife wasn't so tall, we would've never met," George began. "The first time I saw her was at this house party that was being thrown by a friend of Fred's girlfriend. There had to be at least 200 people packed into this house that was about the size of this table," he motioned to the dining room table around which the eight of them sat. "You could barely move without elbowing somebody. So I'd stepped outside to get some fresh air and was standing on the deck, a beer in hand, marveling at how even outside people still melded together into one giant amorphous blob. And that's when I saw her gliding through the crowd, standing head and shoulders above almost everyone else. The whole world came screeching to a halt around us. I couldn't take my eyes off of her. She was the most beautiful, exquisite, and statuesque woman I'd ever laid eyes on," George took Y/N's hand and kissed it, drawing dreamy sighs from the three other women and at least one of the men at the table.
"I watched her as she made her way toward the deck where I was standing," George continued. "I was so completely mesmerized that instead of approaching her, I just stood there like a dork with my mouth hanging open. It was only when she disappeared inside that the spell broke, and I realized I'd just let her walk on by, without so much as a hello."
"You didn't see him?" One of the women asked you.
"No," you shook your head. "I was too busy trying to get through the crowd."
"So what happened?"
"Well," George said, leaning forward. "I learned something very important about my wife that night. She's fast. Damned fast," he paused to take a sip of wine. "I'm not used to that. Most people have trouble keeping up with me because of my long legs. But her legs are almost as long as mine and far more graceful," he said, grinning at you. "She just moves effortlessly through crowds while I'm tripping around, trying to push my way through. By the time I got inside, she was already halfway through the house. And by the time I made it to the front porch, she was already getting into a car and riding off into the night."
"Wait? You didn't actually meet that night?" Another of their guests asked.
"Nope," George replied. "And other than a first name, no one seemed to know anything about her. Turned out she was a friend of a friend of a friend."
"So... when did you actually meet?"
"Three weeks later," Fred chimed in. "During the back to school rush on Diagon Alley. And thank Godric he did. He'd been moping about all over the place."
A round of chuckles broke out around the table, and a light blush briefly appeared on George's face. You were tempted to reach around your husband and slap Fred in the back of his cocky head. You could've easily done so, but refrained because it would've been unprofessional and would've embarrassed poor George even more.
After a few seconds of awkward silence, George cleared his throat and continued, "The day before school starts back is one of our busiest. From the moment we open to the moment we close, it's nonstop chaos. I was exhausted and was getting ready to take my much needed afternoon break when I saw Y/N's face floating above the crowd."
"You really weren't lying when you said her height was the reason you met," one of the guests commented.
"Nope," George replied, taking another sip of wine.
"I take it you didn't get your break?"
George shook his head. "I spent the next hour helping Y/N and her little sister, who was starting her first year at Hogwarts, find everything she could possibly need to start the year off right."
"And then what?"
"Then," George answered. "I asked Y/N out to dinner. And of course she said yes. The rest, as they say, is history."

The moon was high in the sky when dinner finally wrapped up with both new deals and new friends made. You'd stepped outside to enjoy the warm summer evening while George and Fred finished up some paperwork.
You were too wrapped up stargazing to hear George tiptoe up behind you until he wrapped both his arms around your waist. "Nice night for an evening, yeah?"
Snorting at his usual off-the-wall humor, you turned, wrapping your arms around his neck. He melted into your embrace. "I adore that those lovely, long arms of yours just wrap completely around me in this perfect, warm hug. I could disappear into your arms every time," he mummered as he began trailing kisses down your jaw.

Snape had seen a few things in his life, and, as such, very few things surprised him. So when Y/N and Fred walked into Potions' class hand in hand, his first thought was that his eyesight was starting to go. Or maybe his mind. When they sat down together at the same table, he knew that the culprit was neither his eyes nor his mind, but that hell had apparently frozen over.
The genius and the deliquent. Of all the possible people Y/N could've chosen to date, she picked Fred Weasley. A bad feeling settled in the pit of his stomach. She had a bright future ahead of her, and he worried that this misguided decision might interfere with her studies. Rolling his eyes at the pure idiocy of the situation, Snape resolved to let it go for now and speak with her about it during their next book discussion.
Assuming the relationship lasted more than a couple of weeks.
Y/N's POV
Two days earlier - Hogsmede
By the end of the hour long tour through Zonkos, Y/N was chatting with Fred as if she'd known him for years. His unsinkable exuberance, combined with her unexpected fascination with nearly everything in the store, proved to be the key to unlocking the tightly guarded walls around her. She didn't even realize how comfortable she'd become until Fred suggested they join George and his girlfriend at The Three Broomsticks for lunch.
"Oh, um‐‐," her mind blanked. She hadn't expected this, though she shouldn't have been surprised. He and George were two peas in a pod. You rarely saw one without the other. So, of course, he'd want to spend a little time with his twin today.
"It's ok if you don't," Fred backtracked when she shrank back into herself. "It's no pressure, love. We can do whatever you want."
"No, it's okay," she smiled. "I-I think it would be nice."
"Are you sure?" He asked.
Y/N nodded. "Yeah, I'm sure."
Y/N couldn't believe the words that just came out of her mouth. Normally, she would've come up with any excuse she could to get out of such a situation. Maybe she was channeling a little of her great-grandmother's boldness after all. Or perhaps it was because Fred's presence calmed her in a way she never expected. There was just something about him that made her feel safe. So maybe that was why she did what she did next, needing the extra reassurance if she was to survive lunch without making a complete idiot of herself.

Fred's POV
Fred was rarely surprised or caught off guard. So when Y/N slid her hand into his the moment they walked into The Three Broomsticks, he froze, staring down at their clasped hands. Then, back to her, his eyes wide, clearly shocked at this unprecedented development.
"Oh sorry," Y/N began to pull her hand away.
"No, no. I should be the one who's sorry," Fred grasped her hand again. "I just didn't expect you to do that."
"Oh, ok," Y/N looked down, her hair hiding the heat rising up into her face.
"It's ok, truly it is," Fred tried to reassure her. "I've been wanting to hold your hand all day, but I didn't know if you were ready for that yet."
Y/N turned her gaze toward him. "Really?"
Fred gave her a lopsided grin. "Yes, really."
"That's good then," she said, looking up at him. A rosy blush still graced her cheeks, but it was now accompanied by her sweet smile. Fred's heart skipped a beat, and he almost gave into the urge to kiss her right then and there, but decided it might be too much, too soon. So instead, he gave her hand a gentle squeeze and led her to the corner booth where George and his girlfriend sat.
They spent the entirety of lunch and the rest of the afternoon barely letting go of one another's hand. "Didn't you say you needed to stop by Scrivenshaft's for a new quill?" Fred asked as they left the pub.
"Yeah," Y/N replied. "You don't have to go in if you don't want to. I'll only be a few minutes."
"What?" Fred gasped. "And let go of your hand? Never in a million years."
Y/N giggled as that beautiful blush rose up in her cheeks again. "And then we can hit Honeydukes before we head back to the castle," Fred suggested as he once again fought the overwhelming urge to kiss her.

Y/N's POV
Y/N lay in bed that night, unable to stop smiling. Just this morning, she came so very close to canceling. And now, she couldn't believe she'd even considered such a ridiculous idea.
Running a finger over her mouth, she savored the lingering ghost of his lips on hers.
He'd kissed her. Fred Weasley had actually kissed her.
It still didn't feel quite real.
Standing outside her common room with minutes to get back to his own before curfew, Fred had asked if he could kiss her, and she simply nodded, too stunned to speak. He was so soft and gentle, as if he were afraid she might break. And yet, it still set her head spinning and her knees wobbling. All the rest of the evening, the only thing she could think about was when they could do it again.
'Perhaps in the morning,' she thought, yawning and rolling onto her side as sleep and the promise of sweet dreams overtook her.

"No," George's voice was firm. "I'm not endangering Y/N's life, and neither are you."
The evening had been going so well. For the first time since those damned letters arrived in the mail, the dark cloud had lifted from over George and Y/N. That was, until after dinner, when Remus sequestered them outside.
George couldn't believe what he was hearing. Nor could he believe that Lupin could've asked it of Y/N or that she was even considering the possibility.
"It's Remus," Y/N had pulled George off to the side. "He's not going to say anything."
"No, but someone else might," he argued.
"The only people who'll know are us, Remus, and Fred."
"It's too risky." George shook his head. "You know as well as I do how dangerous it is to practice Hemalurgy unsanctioned right now."
"I'm technically not practicing since I'm not charging for my services or publishing my research. I'm just--dabbling. Playing around," Y/N explained. "And since when have you been afraid of a little risk? You and Fred take risks all the time."
"That's different."
"How so?"
George shoved his hands in his pockets and paced back and forth for a minute. "Well, for one, you're from a muggle family. That in itself is a very dangerous thing to be right now. And two, Fred and I have more practice."
"Okay, I'll admit your first point is valid. But the second. Pranks were an everyday thing at Ilvermorny, and I helped you and Fred out quite a few times when I was at Hogwarts. Not to mention there was that time where I helped trick the entire United States into thinking there was a huge UFO sighting."
His mouth quirked up. "That was pretty impressive." He took her hand and kissed it. "I don't want to talk about this with so many prying ears about. Fancy a walk to the lake?"
"A warm spring evening walk with my most favorite person in the whole world. How could I resist?"
George smiled in spite of himself.

Neither spoke until they were sitting at the lake's edge.
"Why does it have to be now?" He asked. "Why can't it wait until things are better?"
"I understand your worries," she squeezed George's hand. "I have them too. But I got into this field because I wanted to help people like Remus. He's been dealing with this since he was four years old. And he's in his thirties now. That's a long time to carry that burden."
George sighed and looked down. The guilt that had been gnawing at him for the past couple of weeks slammed into him again. "I shouldn't have asked you to come back," he mummered. "I've endangered you and fucked up your career. It was wrong of me to drag you into this mess. I'm so sorry, love."
Y/N crossed her arms. "You say that like you're the only one who had a say in the matter."
George looked at her, eyebrows scrunched together. "What do you mean?"
"Well, I don't know if you've noticed this or not, but I'm in this relationship, too."
"I-I've noticed--"
"Good," Y/N smiled and shifted closer to him. The idea that he was worried he'd somehow forced her against her will or destroyed her career troubled her. "Then you also know I have a say-so, as well."
"Of course you do. But I don't understand what--"
"I came back, sweetie," she interjected. "Because I wanted to, not because you made me."
George opened his mouth to speak, but she placed a gentle finger over his lips. "I could've refused," she explained. "I could've said nope, sorry, it's too dangerous. But I didn't. I'm here because I want to be with you more than anything. I want to stand by you through whatever may come, both the good and the bad. This was my decision to make, Georgie. I knew the risks, and I still said yes."
"I could've asked you not to come back until things were safer."
"And I would've written you a letter telling you what time to pick me up at the airport."
George snorted. "Stubborn."
"And by that, you mean awesome." The fact that she didn't pose it as a question made her boyfriend chuckle.
"That you are, my love," he said, kissing the top of head. "That you are."
For a long while, they sat in silence, hand in hand, watching the stars before George spoke again. "The night before Fred and I left Hogwarts, I snuck outside. I knew that my life was getting ready to change in a big way. Fred and I were dropping out of school and setting out on our own. We were excited, but it'd be a lie to say we weren't scared shitless." George paused, smiling. "Don't tell Fred I told you that. He'll kill me."
Y/N returned his smile. "My lips are sealed."
"Good," George kissed her hand and continued. "Anyway, neither of us had any idea if the joke shop would be successful or what we'd do if it failed. It's kinda funny that in all the years we planned out our dream, we never once considered a backup plan." He shrugged. "The only thing I knew for certain was that, whatever happened, you were going to be a part of it. So, I lay in the grass and looked up at the North Star. Our star. And I promised to take care of you and to make you the happiest woman on earth." He paused, heaving a heavy sigh. "But, it seems right now, I can only manage one of those."
"What? No, Georgie, how could you think that?" Y/N was taken aback. "Just being with you makes me the happiest woman on earth. Please never, ever question that."
He squeezed her hand. "But, I know how disappointed you are not being able to start your research. I know how important it is to you, and I really do want you to do this. It's just that if word gets out, I might not be able to protect you."
"I know, my love," she said, returning his squeeze. "And you're right. It is important to me, but it's not as important as us. We're in this together, and we both know we're going to have to make compromises sometimes." Y/N paused, chewing on her lip. "My parents refused to compromise on anything. Ever. And because of that, they failed as partners and as parents," she said, her voice soft. "But, lucky for me, my grandparents were different. It's because of them that I know what a healthy relationship looks like. So, if you're not comfortable with me doing this, I won't do it. This is my compromise. And I choose it willingly."
George gazed into eyes for a few long moments. "I'm one lucky bastard," he said, before cupping her face in his hands and bringing her into a deep kiss.
"Oh, I beg to differ." Y/N countered when they pulled away. "I'm most definitely the lucky one."
George gave her a mischievous grin. "Damn straight you are," he joked, prompting laughter and a playful slap on the arm from Y/N.
He leaned down, giving her one more quick kiss. "I need some time to think about everything. And I want to talk to Fred about it too."
"Of course, my love. Take all the time you need. I'm not going anywhere."
He smiled, raising her hand to his lips briefly. "We should probably head back before mum sends out a search party."

Y/N's POV
What in Merlin's name possessed her to say yes? Oh, yeah, his lovely brown eyes. That's what possessed her. Did he do that to all the girls? Lure them in with his ridiculous puppy dog eyes? She thought she was immune to such charms.
Well, no matter, she thought. There's no going back now. Y/N sighed and looked at herself in the mirror. She wore a long flowing black dress, topped with one of the few non-black items in her wardrobe, a gorgeous plush velvet, indigo jacket with puffed sleeves that had once belonged to her great-grandmother, a notorious flapper. Y/N hoped it would impart to her some of great-grandmother's boldness. And indeed, she did feel a little stronger wearing it.
"What do you think?" She asked her roommates.
"I think you look lovely," Beth complimented.
"You don't think it's too much? With the velvet?" Y/N asked. "We're only going to Hogsmede after all.
"No, I don't think it's too much." Sara answered. "It's a little unconventional, but so are you. It suits your personality."
Y/N looked back over to Beth, who nodded. "You look beautiful, Y/N. You're going knock Fred off his feet."

Fred's POV
Y/N did indeed knock Fred off his feet. His mouth fell open when he saw her. He'd never seen Y/N wearing anything other than her school uniform or ripped up black jeans and black t-shirts. She looked like he should be taking her to the opera instead of the Three Broomsticks, and he blurted it out before he realized what he was saying.
"I overdid it, didn't I?" Her voice wavered as she looked down at herself. "I knew it."
"No, no, not at all. You're perfect," he said. It--it's just that no girl's ever dressed up like this to go out on a date with me before. I wasn't expecting it, is all."
"Oh." Y/N smiled a little. "So it's good?"
"You're divine, Y/N," he smiled from ear to ear and offered his arm. "Milady?"
She took it, her fingers curling into the crook of his arm, sending shock waves surging through him. He wasn't expecting that either. Everything about this girl was unexpected. She was an enigma. A mystery Fred was determined to solve.

Y/N's POV
Y/N kept thinking about this old muggle cartoon she'd seen once where there's this big gray bulldog and his friend, a Jack Russell terrier. The bulldog was a quiet, stoic fellow who plodded along as his terrier friend bounced around all over the place, talking nonstop. This was her and Fred, she thought, unable to surpress her grin. I'm the bulldog, and he's the terrier.
As they walked it occurred to Y/N that she wasn't nervous. At least not devastatingly so, like she normally was when she was around someone new for the first time. She wondered if maybe it was Fred's nonstop talking and jumping around that distracted her from her usual anxious thoughts. Or perhaps it was because he didn't seem to mind that she didn't talk much, unlike other people who would try to prod her into talking by asking her that tired, worn out, asinine question, "why are you so quiet?" It drove her crazy. She never understood how folks thought putting a shy person on the spot would somehow magically break them out of their shell.
Fred was one of the few people who didn't prod. Even when he asked her whether she wanted to go to Zonko's or Honeydukes first, causing her to freeze up.
"You know, if it's okay with you," he said gently, after a few seconds of awkward silence, "we'll hit Zonko's first before all good stuff gets bought up."
Y/N exhaled the breath she'd been holding, and smiled, "Okay. Zonko's it is."
Fred offered his arm once again, and when she accepted it, he resumed his cheerful chatter.
Y/N barely heard a word of it as her mind tried to reconcile Fred, the impulsive troublemaker with this Fred who'd just assauged her obvious distress without a hint of condescension or annoyance. There was, she concluded, more to Hogwarts' infamous prankster than meets the eye.

Fred's POV
At first, Fred tried to maintain a calm composure, but eventually, his exuberant nature won out. Even so, Fred tried not to be overly eager like he was when he asked her out. The fact that she didn't cringe or back away this time, but instead smiled her little Mona Lisa smile, kicked his confidence up a notch.
As much as Fred didn't want to admit it, he was actually quite nervous about their date. Y/N was unlike any other girl he'd ever dated, and he'd been so worried he'd mess it up. He drove George and his girlfriend insane peppering them with questions every five seconds.
"Mate, you'll be fine," George had told him after Fred had interrupted a rather heated make-out session. "You're Fred Weasley, dating expert extraordinaire. People come to you for advice, remember?"
"I know, but--," Fred began.
"She different," George and his girlfriend finished in tandem.
"We know," George sighed. "You've told us a million times. And we've told you just as much that you'll do great."
"Yeah, I know--" Fred started, but the younger twin interrupted him, "Freddie, if you hadn't noticed, we're a bit busy. Go pester Alicia or Angelina or, hell, even Ginny. I'm sure they'll give you fantastic advice."
So, that's what he did. And as it turned out, they were all right. 'I am doing great,' Fred thought as he opened the door to Zonko's and followed Y/N in.
She looked around, eyes wide. "I've never been in here before."
"Really?" Fred was taken aback. "Never?"
Y/N shook her head and gave a half shrug. "Never."
"Well then, Milady," Fred smiled wide, his eyes sparkling. "Allow me to give you the grand tour."
