I'm sorry if I say, "I need you" But I don't care, I'm not scared of love 'Cause when I'm not with you, I'm weaker Is that so wrong? Is it so wrong That you make me strong?

Life in Code: A Personal History of Technology
by Ellen Ullman
In 1945, professional physics had a collective meltdown about having their profession used to create nuclear weapons. They recognized that the best and brightest of their colleagues- LITERALLY EINSTEIN AND FERMI were responsible for weapons that could destroy entire cities.
And so they decided that physicists should take ethics classes.
Meanwhile computer science, as a discipline, has never acknowledged or reckoned with the fact that they literally built and designed the machines that made the Holocaust efficient.
Everyone at Auschwitz had a number tattooed on them. That number was created by IBM, to be fed into the computers that kept track of who was who, who was alive and who had been murdered.
And because computer science has never acknowledged this fact, Facebook can help create the conditions for genocide in Myanmar- and not think they're doing anything wrong.
And the tech boys in the except above can abstract genocide into a useful tool without knowing the actual human atrocity they're discussing.
Computer science needs humanity yesterday.
Bizarrely this is why science FICTION is important, especially shows like Star Trek which tackle these kind of thought experiments in small scale
engineers and techies didn’t start out wanting to be science brained, they started off wanting to fly and fix space ships and land speeders and those jet fighters in battlestar
they wanted to be part of a world that included that and so began a journey that quashed the wonder in them -it is an amazing concept that the universe is just math, it’s numbers and calculations and it’s a awesome idea [awesome in the medieval sense of beyond what my brain can compute] but through the journey into science and only science this wonder is flattened out and replaced with computations and calculations =
now these computations and calculations are important but when faced with an ethics problem they haven’t worked it out through fiction where it’s safe - they don’t see Captain Kirk admonishing a race for being prepared to kill a pregnant girl rather than endorse birth control, or Captain Pike horrified that a world’s tech is based on the slow and painful murder of a child [both actual star trek episodes] because they don’t take anything but the math seriously because it’s been trained out of them
yes, they need training in the arts and humanities as well, but with things that catch their interest, like the calculations that created the bouncing bomb [history] and why it was important, the work of a scientist trapped alone on mars and why His story was published [because it was interesting and entertaining]
science fiction allows them a blank slate to work out the ethics problems in a situation where no one can get hurt,
video games like Bioshock offer you a moral dilemma, kill the little sisters for more adam, or save them from the brainwashing for less - you need adam to become more powerful and survive the later enemies but you don’t know if the rescue option will have benefits down the line - it doesn’t matter if it does - do you do the kind thing and save a slave in a way that directly harms your chances?
Simple questions and hard choices - those are probably the core of ethics and if we sanitise our fiction and our genre fiction especially aren’t we also hobbling our scientists and engineers who are drawn to it and probably need the most to learn its lessons
"ooooh nooooo but a rail strike around the holidays could cripple the economy" damn sounds like their labor is really really important and you should give them what they fucking want
loving the discourse atm that’s ‘vampires disgusted by all the anti-anxiety meds and microplastics in people’s bloods’ vs ‘vampires probably miss the high that over-the-counter opium and mercury tinctures gave blood’
Vampire figuring out he’s depressed after feeling better drinking antidepressant blood.
This time of year is always very nostalgic for me bc I used to be the Token Gentile at an office and every few months there'd be a Jewish holiday and my friend would be like "Hey, I need you to do Gentile things for us" and I'd be like hell yes dude. Gentile Things often meant I'd sign things in exchange for a few dollars on venmo but Pesach was a special time for me because it meant everyone gave me boxes of pasta, cereal, and other baked goods. The first time my friends were like "Hey for reasons we won't bother getting into we're going to give you all of our bread" I was like, it is a powerful responsibility but as an Ally I cannot refuse. Best time of the year, frankly
Reminds me of the year I spent in a house with a Muslim housemate, and he ate nothing during the day throughout Ramadan - then of course he would be hungry af and buy a fuckload of food as soon as he got off work in the evening. Around midnight, he’d realize he just couldn’t eat everything he’d bought on his own, and come knock at my door to ask if I felt like having dinner again.
I always felt like having dinner again.
I misread that as ‘Tolkien Gentile’ and felt let-down by the post.
On the contrary, it feels very Tolkien for people with unfamiliar customs to show up and give you a bunch of their food with barely an explanation. Like a reverse of the opening of The Hobbit where the dwarves show up and eat all Bilbo's seed cake, or something.

The conservatives on the Supreme Court just killed Roe v Wade, ending the federal right to abortion in America. And they are coming for contraception and same-sex rights next.
to my usamerican people:
here is an article that details the status of abortion rights in each state. roe v wade being overturned does not mean that abortion is illegal across the u.s., just that it is now determined on a state by state basis. please stay safe and stay informed.

abortion is a human right. my partner and I have compiled an exhaustive document with links to abortion funds and pro-choice organizations to support during this time, including state-specific resources. please consider donating + sharing!!!

Losing Miranda Rights protections wasn’t on my 2022 bingo card yet here we are….
The Supreme Court limited the ability to enforce Miranda rights in a ruling Thursday that said that suspects who are not warned about their
Because what America really needs right now is less ability to hold cops personally accountable for their actions
So this means that you do still have the right to remain silent.
You just now cannot sue if you are not told your rights.
Unfortunately, this will mostly harm those unaware of their rights. So will deeply, and mostly, effect uneducated people and those unfamiliar with U.S. laws (such as new immigrants).
They (cops) are not only further protected, but now are allowed to not tell you when you have that right. Which honestly can just be confusing for anyone.
It’s fucked up and definitely targets marginalized individuals, in addition to protecting cops. Double lose.
The Supreme Court does not care about us.
Now more than ever: DO NOT TALK TO COPS.
If you are taken into custody for Anything, you invoke your right to a lawyer (“I am invoking my right to a lawyer. Here is my lawyer’s number/Please assign me a public defender.”)
Then you shut the fuck up. “I am invoking my right to remain silent.” Do not make small talk. Do not answer ANY questions. If at any point you do (like to ask for the bathroom, a drink, etc) immediately repeat that you are invoking your right to silence. They will try to get you to talk. They’re allowed to try to get you to break your silence, and they will do so. They’ll make you wait for the lawyer.
Every cop show ever has taught you that getting a lawyer looks guilty, and I’m telling you that’s propaganda. Get the fucking lawyer. Even if they just want a statement out of you, even if you called them. Get the lawyer. Shut up.
