Just to make sure I have something to post... Welcome to my series that definitely won't get abandoned

Dragon Age Character's "Dog Energy"

Lace Harding is the Basset Fauve de Bretagne, aka the Fawn Colored Brittany Basset. Per the AKC Standard:

The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a small, rough-coated French scent hound developed in the 17th Century to hunt small game in the region of origin, Brittany, France. They adapt easily to all terrains, including the most difficult, and to all quarry. He is bold and vivacious in character; compact, tough and robust. The Basset Fauve de Bretagne possesses those characteristics which demonstrate its exceptional aptitude for hunting. A small, stocky hound, lively and speedy for its size, fauves are energetic and hardy. The Fauve temperament is mild, never sharp or timid. As well as impassioned hunters, Fauves are excellent family companions, sociable, affectionate and easygoing. When hunting, Fauves are courageous, wily and tenacious, making them very successful hunters.

Harding Week Day 6: Solo | Team

Word Count: 200 (2 x 100) @datvcompanionweeks

Harding crouched down among the underbrush, peering down on the encampment. It was becoming as natural as breathing, the act of moving alone through dense cover without being noticed. Being with the Inquisition had brought her a lot of resources, but this was about skill and practice. Maybe magic could help, but she didn’t have that. All she had was the years of tracking game and predators through the Fereldan Hinterlands. Now it was red templars, Venatori, and opportunistic creeps. One dwarf against many. Leliana kept sending more scouts to help her, but more scouts meant more mistakes, more noise.

She leaned forward to peer over the edge to the path below. This place was absolutely crawling with Venatori. Harding had been to Orlesian balls with fewer people. This path wasn’t an option. With a sigh she turned back to the others and shook her head, making her way back to them. It struck her, in the moment, just how much she had become accustomed to traveling with others. Harding still scouted ahead of the group most of the time, but it felt good knowing there were people at her back. People she could trust. People who would protect her.

Harding Week Day 5: The Stone | Lyrium | Isatunoll

Word Count: 300 (3 x 100) @datvcompanionweeks

Harding closed her eyes and tried to focus on the feeling. Different from anything she had felt before. Not an emotion, more like a physical sensation. An awareness, but not at the same time. Similar to how she knew where her hand was without thinking about it. If she reached for The Stone, it was there in an instant. There was no searching for it, it simply existed. Before she could finish asking for the knowledge, she had it. Wherever The Stone was, she knew even without trying. This was so much more than she had ever heard others describe.

Harding marveled at the lines of lyrium that ran through the mine. With each lurching drop of the wooden elevator her stomach pitched in protest. She hoped the elevators in Orzammar ran better than this. It was the lyrium that had her attention though. In all the times she had seen it on the surface it never looked like this. Describing lyrium as veins was suddenly disturbing. It did look like veins. Something about the place felt off. Harding had been underground before but this mine had a weirdness to it she could not place.

The Inquisitor would be ecstatic.

It was a bizarre feeling. Not bad. Not good. There was a single word to describe it, but since no one else understood the word it was useless. Harding was grappling with understanding it herself, and she was experiencing it. How was she supposed to explain it to those who could not feel it? She was herself - singular, distinct, separate. Except she was also universal, encompassing, communal. There was a constant feeling of connection, of being not alone in her mind. It was not just her mind anymore. Trying to grasp it made her head hurt and her skin glow.

the thing about mothers in fiction is that a lot of fandoms seem to be under the impression that the worst thing a woman can possibly do is be a bad mother. like they can forgive deadbeat dads easily but the moment a woman is a bad or even mediocre mother she's the devil incarnate to them. and then you're like "i like her and i think she's interesting" and they immediately go "oh so you think it's okay to be a bad mother (which is the most evil thing a woman can be)". and don't even get me started on how they react to female characters who are bad stepmothers

Harding Week Day 4: Kal Sharok | Titans

Word Count: 200 (2 x 100) @datvcompanionweeks

Harding gawked like a child as Stalgard lead her into Kal Sharok. Of all the places she had been, a true dwarven city was not one of them. She had not expected everything to be so tall. She was convinced these buildings were taller than the Grand Cathedral in Val Royeaux. Maker help her was it grand. She ever seen so much detailed poured into… buildings. Gold and precious stones everywhere. According to Stalgard this was not even something special! It was just a house! Maybe it was a good thing surfacers weren’t allowed. The Orlesians would be so jealous.

Harding pulled the heavy wool blanket tighter as she stared out over the valley. Across the horizon was a mountain with an unmistakable face. Not quite dwarven, or human, but close enough. Every visit convinced her more that it was a Titan. Maybe that was simply what the Titans looked like. Perhaps the millenia had eroded its features, smoothing away the details. How many other “mountains” were out there? Other than herself and Valta, and the darkspawn, was there anything left of the Titans? She wondered what all the sundering took from them. Were the Titans dead? Were they Tranquil?

This week I bring you progress on a story that started in 2011 and is still waiting for it's conclusion. But we're getting there!

The Other Side of the Story

Anora and Isabela meet one dark night. Sex ensues, because this is Isabela. What comes after is so much more.

Anora was not a weaker woman. All it did was make her heart race a little. And her mouth go dry. She was fine.

Isabela sauntered across the plank as if it was laid on solid stone, not swaying feet above the sea suspended between two shifting ships. As had been true every time she had ever seen her, there was a swaggering confidence to the pirate. The decades had changed nothing, the sight of Isabela was still mesmerizing. Especially in her element like this. There was nothing Anora could do except stand there, transfixed. The pirate was as fluid as the sea rolling beneath her. An almost predatory grace, one that should be impossible for any woman but especially one of Isabela’s years. Not that Anora would ever dare comment on her age. Isabela was as timeless as the sea itself. While it felt like an eternity, the truth was it took Isabela less than a few breaths to cross the gap and drop easily onto the deck of their ship. That blighted cocky smile on her lips.

Harding Week Day 3: Cheese | Mabari

Word Count: 200 (2 x 100) @datvcompanionweeks

“Mama!” Lace was demanding as she hung off Contessa’s thick neck. The mabari was unbothered, panting noisily as she watched Ma Harding cube cheese.

“Yes, Lace?” Ma Harding answered without pausing, her tone indulgent.

“Contessa wants cheese, Mama!” Even standing tall Harding looked like she was next to a pony. “Mama! Cheese! We want cheese, Mama!”

“One piece each. You’re supposed to be chasing off crows, not stealing cheese.” Ma handed over two pieces of cheese, one into Harding’s grasping fingers and the other into Contessa’s large jaws. The mabari was the gentler of the two.

“Now, shoo! I’m cooking.”

“Now you stop that!” Harding scolded sharply. The young mabari whined and sat down obediently. Even with all four paws on the ground, the pup was grown enough to shove her snout close to Harding’s face. While she was cooking no less! Perhaps childhood had softened her memories of having a mabari, because Arlessa was a relentless pest.

“Oh fine,” Harding conceded almost immediately. She broke off a bit of cheese and held it up. Arlessa was slobbering everywhere in excitement, but took the treat with surprisingly gentle dexterity.

“Mierda, even your dogs eat cheese.” Lucanis muttered from the doorway.

Harding Week Day 2: Archery | Camping

Word Count: 200 (2 x 100) @datvcompanionweeks

Harding inhaled slowly, opened her eyes as she pulled back the string. Her fingertips ghosted against her cheek as she reached the full draw. Down the shaft of the arrow sat the target. A controlled exhale and the string snapping out of her fingers. Quick, accurate, humane. A successful hunt. ~ Harding moved with the speed of experience. It was not rabbits that squealed, but the gasps of dying men. Tevene curses filled the air as Venatori found themselves full of holes. This time, there was no lingering sense of guilt.

Sometimes things needed to die. Sometimes those things were people.

Harding crawled beneath the dense layers of waterproofed canvas. The tent was folded over a ropeline between two trees, and simply staked down at the corners. In the cool Ferelden summers it was enough. She flopped onto the thick bedroll and sighed. It was nice to actually be camping for once. For fun. Not because she was trekking between forgotten places on paths that had disappeared before Andraste was born. No, this was just for the love of the outdoors. The weather was perfect, the bedroll was perfect. Even the complaining of her companions about her homemade stew was perfect.

Jadal Thorne is my Harding romance. She knows precisely nothing about growing anything, and is absolutely enchanted by Harding’s ability to get plants to grow. I picture them mostly focusing on crops and other edible plants, because Jadal may be a dreamer but she is also pragmatic when it comes to it. And she grew up in the Anderfels, where even growing food staples is a complex, difficult ordeal. Jadal does not have a green thumb at all, so most of her efforts go toward decorating the garden. This mostly consists of putting boulders and stones throughout the garden for her to sit on and enjoy the greenery.

Harding Week Day 1: Compassion | Rage

Word Count: 200 (2 x 100) @datvcompanionweeks

“Hey, it’s okay kid,” Harding spoke softly and stretched out her hand. She was acutely aware of the badly damaged stone building looming above them. Elgar’nan might be dead, but Minrathous was still in a dangerously sorry state. “Just take my hand.” The child was clearly scared, their little face smeared with dust and dirt, tear tracks visible through the grime. But after a moment of hesitation they reached out. Harding smiled reassuringly and grabbed them firmly, pulling with strong but consistent pressure to avoid hurting them worse. Maker, it sure would be helpful if she could move this stone.

Harding narrowed her eyes as she could suddenly feel her heart hammering in her ears. She clenched her teeth so hard they hurt, and her knuckles turned white as she balled up her fists. A slow exhale through her nose was the only sound she made. The urge to push it away was overwhelming. If it was put away it could not hurt anyone else. It couldn’t hurt her either. But she had been working on it. On letting herself be angry. Rage was just another emotion. It could be dangerous and useful. Right now, it just might be useful.
