Just saw Supergirl 2026 for the second time and the relative (to a point of realism) lack of toxic masculinity stands out so beautifully. Yes some sort of large blob person propositions Kara, but she turns him down without it being a big deal (rather than implying he was gross, casual sex itself gross, or some combination of the above). Lobo calls her âthe ditz from the barâ and she turns it back on him and he takes the insult with a cheerful âtouchĂ©â (no âmanlyâ offense taken at the âgirlyâ insult he himself made). Ruthye is not chastised for making emotional decisions, even when those actions cause a ripple down effect (the family on Bilquis being killed), even when she lashes out at Kara and blames her for the same thing.
I love how normal a lot of the scenes in Obsession were (the first 25-ish minutes entirely!). It was a normal, dramatic, semi-comedic, romantic sort of movie! Like, the setting of this world is inherently familiar and grounded in reality. It was only Bearâs specific wish that turned itâthat turned Nikkiâinto something else, something horrifying. The baseline in this universe isnât some sort of fucked up world wherein magic wishes play by genie rules to fuck people over intentionally. Even wish-Nikki is pretty surface level normal until real-Nikki and Bear make it difficult for her to accomplish her task of fulfilling Bearâs wish. The baseline in this universe is normal everyday life. Bear is the one that visibly caused horror movie shit (indicated by editing, music, etc) to appear.
i feel like people are overlooking the moment at the beginning of obsession where nikki straight up asks "do you like me?" and once bear lies and says no she replies "ok, good." for starters, it was a chilling moment to me because this is such a classic experience of having a close guy friend, only to realize that he wants more from you. girls aren't dumb! nikki isn't dumb! of course she knows that bear is into her, she has eyes! she can see his stuttering and sheepishness and she's just dreading the moment she has to turn him down, to tell him that he's like a brother to her. just before she had told him that she doesn't feel real love in her life, and i don't think it would be a leap to attribute a small part of that feeling to her fear that her friendship with bear isn't as simple as she wants it to be.
it's also a chilling question from nikki because once she walks away bear knows that she doesn't feel the same way about him, and he makes the wish anyway. he is incapable or unwilling to take a hint and see that she doesn't feel the same way. and that question is the last thing she says to him before he ruins her life forever. it's unfair.
This is the moment that sets up the actual horror of the rest of the film (because there has been NO horror before this point). Even without the wishes, this is still the turning point. Bear was given an opportunity to confess like an adult, so that he and Nikki could handle it like adults. Nikki asked because she was telling him it had passed the point of awkward/cute/whatever and they needed to talk about it and he refused to! If it hadnât been for the wish, Bear wouldâve spent the next however long longing for/lusting after Nikki and it would have only gotten more and more uncomfortable the longer he refused to admit it and also refused to let it go. The wish is a plot device to highlight and exaggerate horror of those sorts of situations. Heâs behaving childishly and selfishly and itâs going to harm himself and all of his relationshipsâbut more than any of that, itâs going to harm the person on the other side of his obsession.
Everyone loves to talk about the brother-son/brother-father relationships that appear in fandom (Obi-Wan and Anakin, Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson, Sam and Dean Winchester, to name a few) and then almost always forget either the âbrotherâ or the âsonâ of the dynamic
Iâve seen a lot of talk about the symbolism of âGraceâ as a name and while I love all those: The symbolism of the name âEva,â which is so close to its origin of âEve.â
Eve, the woman who commits The Original Sin that gifts humanity free will vs Eva Stratt, the woman who commits murder (one of the worst sins/universally recognized act of evil) to save the human race.
Eve, who is blamed so heavily that Christian sexism uses her to justify itself. Eva, who knows she will be imprisoned for the rest of her life.
Eve, who is still recognized as the mother of humanity in spite of her sins. Eva, who must still be recognized, in part, as the savior of humanity in spite of her crimes.

Like God forbid a woman answer the trolley problem. A problem that was initially created to describe the difficult (but ultimately extremely understandable and morally correct choice) of aborting fetuses that their mothers do not want. God forbid a woman choses herself and those around her (her other children, her career, the entire population of the Earth) over one solitary human life. Even if it was a difficult choice. Even if she cared about them.
Aroace Grace (who is, crucially, aware of it) responding to Strattâs line âYou have no immediate family. You donât even have a dogâ with âYouâre sending me to die because Iâm not heterosexual enough? Wow.â
comedy movies are a more accurate gauge of societyâs attitude towards minorities than any other type of media
Wherever those posts are about the entirety of the PHM team being lowkey in love with Grace? They are all correct because in what universe would this interaction happen otherwise?
i love how supergirl 2026 handles the issue of death. grief of losing family is all encompassing and insurmountable. you might want to die because everyone else you know and love are/have but you have to keep living for them instead. sometimes people die in fights (kara vs the one big alien that tried walking away with ruthyeâs sword) but it doesnât need to be the goal (capturing the tech pirates, breaking a dudeâs arm but mostly just knocking everyone around, kara taking out brigands in the first big battle but mainly focusing on making sure âthe bridesâ are free). revenge killing isnât going to make the grief go away, itâll only make it worse because it will stay with you and forever tie you to the worst of your grief. and kara doesnât offer ruthye the choice between becoming a killer or bearing the responsibility of choosing whether kara kills him for her. the only choice ruthye needs to make is whether or not to walk away from itâand it will not be in blissful righteousness but because if she stays she might still kill him anyways because the wanting to doesnât leave. ONLY THEN will kara kill him, because itâs better her hands than the 13yo girlâs and itâs something that must be done because krem will never, ever stop otherwise.
adding one thing (in the reblog so anyone who wants to gleeful continue ignoring the male side characters that people keep focusing on instead of the MAIN FEMALE CHARACTERS can easily ignore it) is in the way lobo talks about death. he thinks that sport and money are perfectly reasonable motivations for killing. he himself is a bounty hunter that kills for money but doesnât go out of his way to kill anyone past that point. he thinks revenge is a boring reason to kill someone but encourages a teenage girl to do it anyways. heâs rolling his eyes when ruthye walks away and heâs delighted when kara makes the kill. most interestingly, though, is that he does have some weird complex about killing his own bounty. heâs after krem but heâs fine hanging out in a cell until an opportunity presents itself and heâs fine with letting someone else make the kill. he doesnât have some trussed up code of honor or anything.

i love how frequently kara used her own body as a shield. she was spiraling through the air with ruthye and was twisting and turning so she was the one plowing through the concrete, she was letting a motorcycle crash and break against her back. it might not be the poise of habit (having more control/redirecting the objects smoothly/etc) but by god does kara have the heroic instincts.
Given Aloraâs comment about Jor-Elâs âconqueror of worldsâ bullshit plan in Supergirl and the planning that both of Karaâs parents had to put into sending her from Argo, I know the conversation between Clark and Kara after Superman 2025 was CRAZY
