Regardless of their opinion on him, no one talked about how young Phantom was, how he was dressed in a hazmat suit like some sort of lab rat. They didn’t want to think about how the one time anyone gained a peek under his suit they saw a patchwork of scars and bruises. They didn’t want to think of how the one time parents were mentioned in his presence he flinched.

They didn’t want to think about how Phantom died.

(AKA everyone in town has a theory of how Phantom came to be. It isn’t pleasant.)

A Mass Effect au where humanity's introduction to the galaxy wasn't a war, but a rescue- specifically one of human children lost in space.

Soulmarks are supposed to be unique. They’re supposed to be a sign that out of everyone present in the world, those people belong together.

They’re not supposed to be like yours: passed down from generation to generation as the bearer feigns being markless in horror of the abomination staining their skin, fearful that they might finally be the one to meet… whatever it is that has marked your family so.

You follow their example.

You hide.

You say you have no mark.

You don’t bring any attention to yourself.

But…

Lately there’s been an itch under your skin. An itch that feels just as if perhaps something beyond humanity has started to pay attention to you.

You pray you’re wrong.

The light flowing through him was barely covered by his skin, peeking through open eyes, an open mouth, and open wounds. His skin grew tight as electricity wound itself around his bones. He was a supernovae waiting to be unleashed, and if he had to go far, far away from Amity Park to do so before it became too much... well that was between himself and the open sky. (AKA the portal accident leaves Danny significantly more changed than he lets on. The mixing of a ghost's powers and human life grow to create powerful results.)

Human beings have markings. They have markings that indicate where they'll touch their soulmate for the first time. They have markings for their friends too. It's usually on the hands, or perhaps even on the shoulder. Of course there's some unique ones, but there usually isn't much variation. The markings that have the most variety are the ones covered up. The ones no one wants others to see are hidden beneath long sleeves, turtlenecks, concealer, and masks as they bloom with dull, ugly color. They show how you'll die.

When the Blood Moon rose for the first time, previously slain monsters reappeared and people panicked. Many were lost. The moon rose again. People organised. They learned how to be stealthy and where to safely sleep at night. They learned to restrain their longing to build in cleared areas. The monsters would always be back. The moon rose again. It was a reminder that the world was still dangerous, but there was no longer paralyzing fear. The moon rose again. And again. And again. Its magic sunk deep into the land. They were prepared for monsters coming back to life. They were not prepared for people to rise too.

A Mass Effect au where humanity followed a different approach to space travel; they made brainships. By welding a human mind permanently into a spaceship they gained adaptable ships without the possible risk of rouge AI. It's a good idea for everyone involved, except perhaps for those who are made into the ships. (Idea borrowed from Anne McCaffrey's "The Ship Who Sang")

Danny Phantom/Voltron crossover where Team Voltron finds Vlad Plasmius in space sometime after Jack Fenton left him there during Phantom Planet. Plasmius convinces Team Voltron that he’s the victim of a ruthless attack ordered by none other than notorious villain, Danny Phantom.

When Leviathan first appeared, it wasn't just the fishing and shipping industry that was affected. Merpeople were forced to evict their homes and constantly move to escape death. Only the youngest could temporarily escape this life as they were still small enough to blend in with human society. They lived as full a life they could manage before they had to return to the sea. Of course, Taylor's mother was one of these beings and now she has to deal with being caught between two worlds on top of the already present stresses of living in a parahuman world.

A mundane trip by an asari exploration fleet leads to the discovery of a lifetime as they find, or rather they are found by, a gargantuan spacefaring creature holding four smaller creatures, who in turn are holding… a flat world?! (AKA a Mass Effect/Discworld crossover)

The year is 21XX. Natural resources are nearly depleted. Materials that were once common are scarce, resulting in a whole new line of work. Brave men and woman scavenge for material rich finds in a harsh and dangerous environment where one misplaced step can result in exposure to biohazards, being mauled by opportunistic animals, or even being buried alive in garbage. Yes, these people go where no one else dares to go in order to fulfill the demands of the human race: the landfill.
