It’s the middle of August and I’m finally starting to properly process that July was very heavy. I witnessed a murder.

I’m struggling with the afterimage of it. It’s like I can’t unsee it sometimes, like it’s burned into the backs of my eyes. Where I live, gun violence is frequent and increasing. It’s happened around me, I’ve seen it in the news, but I’d never seen it right in front of me. I’ve seen people describe experiences like these as feeling like they’re happening in slow motion and I think I understand that now. It was only a few seconds, but in the moment and in my memory… it feels like it lasted so much longer.

I feel very off kilter these days.
