Ghostbusters vs Ghostbusters
Iâve seen the new Ghostbusters movie twice in the cinema since it opened, and my gut reaction both times was that I enjoyed it more than the original, which was one of my favourite childhood films.
Last night I watched Ghostbusters (1984) again just to be sure, and I am sure. Ghostbusters 2016 is the superior film.
Ghostbusters 1984 is still good, but it is crude, often gross, immature, and sometimes down right nasty. Venkman is piece of shit, and not as funny as I remember. Not at all funny, in fact. My two favourite lines in the movie come from Ray and Winston, both the only times I laughed out loud watching it. Winston never felt well integrated into the team, there was no sense of camaraderie between any of them, Venkman treated everyone like crap, Ray and Egon seemed more like colleagues than friends and even the attempt to illustrate camaraderie shortly before they enter the apartment building and build to the climax was unconvincing. There was little to no real characterization or character development in anyone, they all flt like cardboard cut out characters.
Ghostbusters 2016 was just a better, more enjoyable film whose humour did not rely almost entirely on one character being an arsehole to everyone else.
Ghostbusters 2016 was funnier, and cleverer, I laughed out loud so much both times Iâve seen it, and humour was seldom mean or nasty.Â
It had better characterization, with each character seeming like a real, three dimensional person immediately after being introduced. Each character was developed further as the plot progressed.
The plot was better, rather than basically being âghosts randomly show up and need to be busted all of a suddenâ, there was an actual catalyst to the sudden increase in paranormal activity.
After a slightly slow quarter of an hour the pacing in the modern version was better too, especially around the climax.
Finally, here is also a real sense of camaraderie built amongst the team of women that feels genuine, palpable and natural in contrast to really having to try and infer its existence in the original.
tl:dr Ghostbusters (2016) is better than the original.
