You ever think about how weird hippos are ecologically speaking?
There's literally no other megafauna on earth that spends the entire day lounging around in water, mostly just socializing, only to come onto land to feed at night.
I remember when I used to do education programs on hippos, most people assumed they ate aquatic plants, and that that's the whole reason they were in water. Meanwhile, hippos are basically just giant nocturnal cows that eat only grass.
most animals that start adapting to live more of their lives in water:
"i must grow my bones lighter and less dense so that i don't get trapped on the bottom and may float easier in this new environment"
hippos: "denser. heavier bones. MOAR dense. Make sink the most."
mother nature: but how will you get off the bottom when you sink?
hippos: Make muscles more too, give all muscle.
mother nature: and to stay warm in the water? a big layer of fat?
hippos: no! no fat only muscle.
mother nature: o....kay. And, you eat aquatic plants, that's why you spend so much time in the water?
hippos: lol no. eat land grass, like cow.
mother nature: i see. right. You eat mostly grass, so, flat grinding teeth?
hippos: hell no. big spike teeth. sharp big teeth. Biggest
mother nature: what, like lions? 3 inch fangs?
hippos: course not. giant fuck-off teeth, 18 inches. Also, not just one pair, three pairs of giant sharp teeth. give
mother nature: but you eat... grass?
hippos: yeah. lol. Sometimes eat a zebra tho. Or a antelope. Maybe eat a crocodile, you don't know. Give all teeth, giant fuck-off teeth. Most bone! most muscle! most teeth! Me.
mother nature: y'know what? fuck it, sure, here you go
hippo: ...
hippo: i'm very angry now
so idk about layers, and they are not all the same size, but they have three pairs of large sharp teeth on each side of their mouth, or you could say six pairs of ...? anyway they have a bunch of molars you can barely see through the gums, and then they have these teeth:
looks like this in the mouth
so those are their, yeah i guess actually six pair of giant fuck-off teeth
Roman portable sundial in the shape of a cured ham. The whimsical yet precision-crafted bronze timepiece was unearthed in Herculaneum in 1760 and quickly identified as a rare pocket sundial by its grid markings. The exact workings of the 'pork clock' have, however, only recently come to light thanks to new research.
Historians at Wesleyan University created an exact 3D-printed replica of the sundial, complete with its lost gnomon (the part of a sundial that casts a shadow) which was described by an 18th-century museum curator as having been in the shape of a pigâs tail.
Outdoor experimentation with the sundial confirmed that the device would be hung from a chain with the sun on its left side, allowing the pig tail to cast its shadow across the grid. Vertical lines on the grid represent the months of the year, while the horizontal lines indicate the number of hours past sunrise or before sunset.
The Roman user aligned the tip of the tail's shadow to fall on the vertical column of the current month. They then counted the number of horizontal lines from the top of the grid to the tip of the shadow, to reveal the hour of the day.
While fixed sundials were common in towns across the Roman world, this prosciutto clock is one of only around 25 portable sundials to survive from antiquity and one of the earliest known to exist.
so grace is probably alarming to most eridians at first because he's a lanky wet alien with too few limbs, yes--but what if he ends up being terrifying in a sort of divine way instead of a repulsive one?
like. a creature that perceives the intangible? a creature that walks with thin permeable membranes bared to the air, whose blood contains elixir that can destroy pathogens without heat? a creature that is impossibly fragile yet resilient? a creature that breathes potently flammable gas to survive? a creature that is loud all over and speaks in a strange and frightening monotone, who thought it would die for you? who gave up its home in the heavens for you without meeting you first, whose first words to your people were probably something along the lines of We saved your star. It's gonna be okay. Don't be afraid.
grace is such an interesting bundle of contradictions! he breathes an incredibly flammable gas because he lives at such a cold temperature the gas can't ignite except he burns it very slowly inside the delicate gauzy cage of his body. his meat is basically a delicate water-and-protein foam because he lives in a very tiny fraction of normal atmospheric pressure. his planet has almost no air, no atmosphere. they're so gauzy, so frail, living underneath a whisker-fine sky, that to get to space in a couple seconds by exploding towards it. they can't build a space elevator because all their materials are just various attempts to do anything whatsoever with shitty frozen metals and various hydrocarbon meshes. their spaceship is a tiny refrigerator, the most expensive thing they ever built, and controled by a impossibly complex calculation engine they knitted out of silicates. it contains all human knowledge, if it doesn't catch on fire.
they knew that space was there because they can perceive it directly. it's literally right overhead all the time for their entire evolution. they know the faces of thousands, millions of stars, as soon as they tip their faces up. eridani is a name from two thousand years ago. all their stars have been named and known and watched and sung about for longer than any individual human civilization. they have always known the eridian star was there.
they live to be seventy.
I love you, vintage gay Pikachu. Youâll find the boy for you, I promise.
Thanks for everything. Ad astra.
people needdddd to wear headphones in public because while on an otherwise very lovely walk in the park today i saw a guy sitting under a tree watching a porn parody of the star wars prequels
if nothing else trying to tune out the sounds of anakin and padme going to town as i contemplate the babbling brook gave me a brief but vivid window into what itâs like to be obi wan kenobi

Governments around the world are censoringâand criminalizingâthe currents in which fanworks flow.
Our latest is live! âïž @bookshop reports on the increasing criminalization of creativity around the worldâespecially queer and/or erotic works, and including fanworks. Recent rulings against an Australian erotica writer and a Russian fic writer, the confirmation that danmei writer Mo Xiang Tong Xiu was imprisoned for her work, and growing repression in the U.S., where many global platforms for creative works are based, are all signals of just how worrying the current climate is:
With a barrage of new and expanded laws plus harsher enforcement of existing ones, governments around the globe are criminalizing more and more forms of creative expression. Itâs no longer far-fetched or hyperbolic to say that at any given moment, depending on what country youâre in and what government youâre up against, individual works of fictionâincluding fanworksâcould be criminalized for being queer, or pornographic, or generally deviant. How far the law typically extends seems to be entirely arbitrary, but in recent years, weâve seen regressive censorship and punishment nipping at the heels of fanworks. Online platforms and payment processors then often comply with these laws by instituting sweeping content bans, further marginalizing women, queer and trans people, and sex-positive communitiesâthe currents in which fandom flows.

Highly recommend this piece!! Aja does a fantastic job threading a pretty tricky needle here: some of these crackdowns are against fan creators while others are against creators working in commercial areas, but they're all coming from the same ideological placeâa dangerous climate has been brewing in "the currents in which fandom flows."
I also think it's notable how there are so many parallel cases and laws in quite different kinds of governments: this piece cites cases and incidents from Australia, Russia, Italy, China, the U.S. and its customs/borders with Canada and Ireland, along with a host of other countries where sites like AO3 are banned. Plus we're all on the global internet, much of which is hosted here; these are global problems, and they're largely trending in the same deeply troubling direction.

Learning this was an intentional genocide changed me.
I know most of those following me know this, but just to make it super clear. An Gorta MĂłr (The Great Hunger/the Great Famine) was a deliberate genocide of the Irish people. There was enough food grown in Ireland to make sure everyone was alive and healthy and survived. Instead it was exported, sent to England and elsewhere for profit while men, women, and children starved in the streets. While the English landlords fucked off and evicted starving families who couldnât afford rent. While babies were too weak to cry and died at the side of the road.
They tried to kill us, but they did not succeed. And we owe so much thanks to the other oppressed peoples, in particular the Choctaw Nation and the Masai, who sent money and grain to us.
Let me repeat that. The Choctaw Nation who had just gone through the Trail of Tears sent us money to try save Irish lives. Itâs led to an understanding between Irish people and Native American tribes, most recently when we donated to the Navajo and Hopi fundraisers for COVID-19 relief, because while it may be a different tribe, Irish people will never forget those who helped us and weâll help back.
The entire population of the island is less than seven million people. Weâre still a million less on this island than pre famine. And itâs not that long ago. My grandmotherâs grandparents lived through it. Weâve told the stories, it literally changed the DNA of the country. We have a national fear of renting, because so many people were evicted. People joke about Irish people always offering loads of food, but itâs because thereâs that cultural memory of not being able to.
They tried to kill us, but they did not succeed. We will not let them take our lives, we will not let them take our language. We lost so much, but we will not lose it all.
This is why I get so angry when people say âit was the potato famine, it was because of monoculture/microbes.â
Nope. The potatoes were the only thing Irish people were allowed to fucking eat, because as pointed out, the rest of the crops they were growing were for their landlords to ship to England. So when the one âworthlessâ crop they were allowed to eat rotted in the field, the English crown, empire, landlords, all shrugged and carried on. People starved to death lying next to productive fields.
why would you ever outsource fun to chatgpt? are you stupid? you can make mediocre shit by yourself too.
you're missing out on all the crazy euphoric moments where you execute an idea flawlessly, sending it to your friends and feeling the genuine happiness at their reactions to something you made authentically. you're robbing yourself of something beautiful.
and I get it, writers block, artists block, depression can really be terrible, but once you break out of it (and you will) it will feel like climbing Mount Everest.
peace and love on planet earth! you are saving the environment AND youâre cool!
WE ARE PROUD OF YOU!!!!
