What effects does abuse have on autistic kids?

Someone anonymously asked this on @askanautistic, where I recently got recruited to help answer asks. The Tumblr app on my phone is logging me out whenever I try to reply to asks there, so I lost this whole thing the first time. I’m posting it here while I try to figure out how to make it work!

Is it common for autistic kids to suffer from child abuse? What effects would it have on that kid’s personality? I suppose it would be different from the impact caused on neurotypical children, right? Sorry to bother you and thank you for your time

I have to warn you that this is going to be quite an infodump, because autism and recovery from abuse are both special interests of mine! Also, please feel free to reblog and share your own experiences and thoughts. Yes, it is very common for autistic children to be abused. First, because child abuse of all varieties is incredibly common, and second because on top of that, the default “treatments” for autistic kids are emotionally abusive “compliance therapies” like ABA. I have been in 12-step recovery from abuse for twelve years so far. (A quick explanatory note: there are numerous 12-step programs for pretty much any harmful behavior that can result from abuse, like anorexia and workaholism, as well as for specific dysfunctional relationship things. My experience has been that they’re much more effective than therapy or self-help books in lifting the effects of the abuse and restoring our freedom. Also they’re free, which is pretty much incredible.) My experience has been that I experienced the same effects of abuse that everyone else does. Additionally, that there were ways that my abuse and autism intersected – where they both contributed toward the same outcome – and that there were ways that the abuse affected my autism. First, Effects of Abuse 101:

It seems like universally, people take the same messages from abuse: that we are not good enough, and that we are not safe. We take on a ton of shame that we don’t deserve, because on some level our brains go, “It is not possible or acceptable that this just happened to me for no reason! I have to have done something to deserve/cause it! I must be a terrible person to have somehow brought on something this bad!”

This leads to a fear of failure (because we think failure will just prove that we are terrible, and that therefore the abuse was justified), a fear of success (because attempting success also means risking failure), and a drive to self-sabotage (because unsafe, harmful things feel familiar, after all that abuse, and familiarity makes bad things seem safe).

For me, this played out in hundreds of little and big ways every day. A very few examples: procrastinating on job applications until the jobs disappeared; unintentionally choosing abusive/emotionally unavailable partners; staying in harmful situations too long out of a misguided sense of loyalty.

Ways that my abuse and autism intersected: 

Because I was autistic, I had a hard time identifying what intentions and emotions people were expressing toward me. Because I had been abused, I then assumed that they didn’t really like me, or were only hanging out with me because it was more awkward to ask me to go away.

Because I was autistic, I couldn’t intuit how people knew how much money to spend at the grocery store, how to keep track of checks and debit card transactions, how to budget in general. Because I was abused, I was shamed for not knowing these things (by the very same people who should have been teaching me them in the first place!) and was afraid of asking anyone for help, and assumed that it was too hard and complicated to ever get a grip on.

Because I was autistic, I was at a disadvantage in terms of physical, mental, and emotional energy (aka “spoons”). Navigating the allistic world drained my batteries/spoons quickly. Because I was abused, I was at even more of a disadvantage. I was basically being trained to disregard my own needs and feelings; I had no understanding of self-care; and PTSD, anxiety, and shame were draining my batteries even faster and further. Which then made it even harder to navigate the allistic world; which drained my batteries even further, making it harder to deal with the PTSD, anxiety, and shame; and so on, in a terrible vicious cycle that was utterly invisible to me.

Ways that my abuse affected my autism:

When I was in very early recovery, first discovering that I had been abused (and under a great deal of intense emotion and sensory recall as a result, not to mention being in an abusive and enmeshed relationship at the time), I frequently became non-verbal for hours at a time. (Having recovered, this normally only happens to me under extreme sensory overwhelm, and then only for minutes at a time rather than hours.)

Although I have a lot of sensory processing stuff, I have a history of being very disconnected from sensory input. My body learned, from years of physical and sexual abuse, that it wasn’t safe to know how things felt, looked, smelled, sounded, or tasted. Happily, after years of recovery, now that I am discovering and exploring my autism, I am reconnecting with my everyday sensory experiences.

A lot of autistic people have lossy short-term memories but excellent long-term memories. Both my short- and long-term memories are terrible, thanks to decades of repression and dissociation from the abuse.
