A long time ago, in the Age of Physical, software would be stored on beautiful mirrored discs, and inside each disc a tiny wizard lived who would install the software for you.
love whatever is wrong with him
see carol is right to be freaked out but i also think that deliberately framing her with a huge 'president of the united states of america' flag while she tries to impose her worldview to several people who come from different countries of the global south has to be an intentional choice
the whole show so far has huge themes about US centrism.
when she meets the others, she's not interested in hearing the other people's stories or understanding how it's affected them. and when they do share their thoughts, she doesn't want to hear it, because her worldview is the only valid one. everyone else is either stupid, malicious, or tragically uninformed and doesn't know what they really want.
carol instantly falls into the role of the american hero who has to save the human race because nobody else will. she's only interested in people who she thinks can support that mission (doctors, scientists, etc). she herself has no relevant skills or expertise to offer, other than being a white american, yet she wants to lead the battle against an alien virus. she wants to pretend she's self-reliant and feel that she's actually doing something to help, even though all she's actually done is made things worse. she can at least feel self righteous that she's on the right side and doing things for herself.
it's totally normal to feel like you want a sense of control over the situation and that there's progress being made towards a solution. but the others are dealing with that in different ways. carol is dealing with things in an extremely american way - exerting her moral superiority over others.
her feelings literally matter more than anyone else's in the entire world, because her righteous anger kills millions of people she'll never even meet or know about. if that's not american I don't know what is!!
lowkey fucked up if you think about it
Do you ever think about how little time Helly had with Mark post OTC? Day 0 - The few seconds at the ORTBO post waterboarding.
Day 1 - Mark is acting weird. She calls him out.
Day 2 - She learns what happened while she was away. They have sex.
Day 3 - He's gone.
Day 4 - He's gone.
Day 5 - Cold Harbor "I just wish we had more time" carries so much weight. It makes her running to meet up with him at the stairwell door after saying "They give us half a life and think we won't fight for it" make so much sense. She's been given a small taste, barely hours, of the affection (both given and received) both her and Helena crave.
Of course she's not ready to give that up.

Don’t think about one of Helena’s last sentences as an unsevered woman being “they say it doesn’t hurt.” Don’t think about the way she exhaled and looked down the second the camera turned off. Don’t think about the fact that Helena probably just really misses Mark right now and doesn’t know if she’ll ever see the version of him she first fell in love with ever again. Don’t think about how she didn’t tell anyone about the hanging and was all alone in that hospital for days. Don’t think about the trapped look on her face as she stepped into the elevator. Don’t think about how so many of her scenes involve her being recorded and/or surveilled. Don’t think about it!
me when I imagine how the zufu interaction might have ended if helena didn’t mention his wife
