It's still so funny to me that hobbit society has technology like pony-traps and handkerchiefs and post offices but the realms of Men and Elves, at least, are very much still in their version of the High Middle Ages. I would kill for a scene where Aragorn starts doing the whole Galavant thing - we shall meet when the night air grows as chill as the depths of Moria and the setting sun colours the sky that particular shade of blue as to recall to us the sinking of Numenor into the very Sea Itself - and Pippin just goes 'have none of you guys ever learned to use a freaking clock'.

Hi Everyone.

I know I haven't posted anything in here for a hot minute but then an unexpected fandom happens to me earlier this year.

In February, I bought a ticket to see Cats. It was a National Tour to commemorate 40th anniversary of first Cats show in Australia. Now at this point I barely remember the 1998 VHS that I watched once upon a time and the only thing that is kind of fresh in my mind about Cats is the internet dunking on the 2019 film.

The day came and I went.

And I fell in love.

I went home and purchased the 1998 recording the next day. When I find out that the show was being extended, I bought another ticket. And as luck would have it, a kind lady asked to switch seat with me so she can sit with her husband. That's how I end up on the third row with Rumpleteazer staring into my soul during The Naming of Cats.

I'm hooked. For a while I can't even think of any other fandoms. I scoured YouTube for bootleg recordings. I wrote a little fic here and there.

Until one ill advised afternoon, I decided to finally watch the 2019 film.

I tell you now my friends, there's not enough hard drugs in the world to make that film watchable. Even in Skimbleshanks' number, my brain keep going wrong, wrong, wrong at the scale. What follows after that is me watching reviews after reviews of the 2019 film in YouTube. I will list my favourites below:

A question then forms in my mind: Is it possible to give Cats a story?

The immediate answer is yes obviously. Fanfictions authors have found a story from literally anything. I don't see why Cats is any different. And the decent amount of fics in AO3 agrees with me.

Which then brings me to the next series of questions: Is it possible to adapt Cats into a film? In a way that leans into the strengths of film? And still very much the Cats that we love?

These questions sat with me for a while until I imagined the prop train in Skimbleshanks' number transform into real train. And I was like - THIS is the kind of things that can be done with film. I can have both the absolutely adorable prop train AND the real train in the same number.

The ideas just keeps coming after that and in a way that I'm sure a lot of my fellow fanfic writers have experienced, it demands to be written.

So here I am, about a month later, after a YouTube crash course of how to use WriterDuet - I have written my first ever script.

And I'm going to be honest here, I'm putting it here because I don't know what else to do with it.

What I really love about the complications of the Essek situation is that it’s such a great example of a DM providing consequences. 

I most often see the word “consequences” thrown around the online D&D realm by people convinced DMs need to “punish” players for doing something creative (although the people pushing for this tend to claim those creative moves are “stupid”) or demanding player character death for any miscalculation as if that’s the only kind of consequence that matters.

Essek currently being a very dangerous ally to the group is a consequence of them spending significant RP time and investment in the character. This is a character who, if we look at the EGtW, was designed as an antagonistic force. But because the party spent time being nice to this character, finding out his motivations, listening to him, and offering an opportunity for change and atonement rather than attacking when they discovered his dark secrets, they now have to deal with a much more nuanced and complicated consequence.

Essek, for all that he almost certainly is an ally in this situation, is also an incredibly complicated one. They can’t and don’t trust him entirely, he limits their ability to uncomplicatedly involve other potential allies, but he’s also clearly developed beyond the person they met over fifty episodes ago because of the party’s actions. “You were nice to this selfish and antagonistic character and now he’s loyal to you, what are you going to do about that?” is such a more interesting consequence than “punishing” the players for trusting an untrustworthy character.

It’s a good model for DMs for building complicated consequences without easy answers, and ones that go beyond violence and death as a punishment for taking risks.
