happy birthday nana – this comes 12 years too late, years during which i’d try to piece together a picture of you from stories of those who knew you – from the eyes of your children & closest family, nani mama & the khalas. my own memories of you are from a time when i was barely 3ft high, but those times that i can never go back to, i'll cherish forever. like when you gave me Rs20 but it was in 2 notes of 10 and i couldnt remember what 10 plus 10 was so i ran around the house brandishing the notes and announcing at the top of my lungs, nana gave me ten ten rupees!!! (you could buy a lot with that back then). or your habit of making friends with the needy and chatting with them wherever you could. and how every ramadhan you’d organise iftar in the driveway for the drivers of the whole street, and i’d be thrilled to run around taking plates of fruit – i remember the melons vividly – and samosas and jugs of rooh afza. or the 9th muharram juloos when you were giving out food in the middle of the crowd: me, feeling special that I was allowed to go with you but also desperately trying to breathe – being 3 feet and all. or at the farm when once the well was built, you showed me how to make a wish and toss a coin into it over my shoulder. mine never landed much as i’d try, so you picked me up and put me on your shoulder and finally, i heard the splash. or the morning of my (5th?) birthday, when i woke up to you singing happy birthday and my eyes opened to everyone gathered around me and presents strewn near me. or your insistence on eating after eights (the chocolate) only, of course, after 8. so mint chocolate being my favourite flavour, we'd all stare earnestly at the clock till it struck 8pm. or when you'd throw big bonfire parties at the farm with extended family and the fire always scared me ??? or when once you were resting and i brought my colouring next to you – it was a bunch of grapes, and i was doing it pretty clumsily, and you took it from me and showed me how to do each circle individually patiently neatly. Holy Quran 57:20

اعْلَمُوا أَنَّمَا الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا لَعِبٌ وَلَهْوٌ وَزِينَةٌ وَتَفَاخُرٌ بَيْنَكُمْ وَتَكَاثُرٌ فِي الْأَمْوَالِ وَالْأَوْلَادِ ۖ كَمَثَلِ غَيْثٍ أَعْجَبَ الْكُفَّارَ نَبَاتُهُ ثُمَّ يَهِيجُ فَتَرَاهُ مُصْفَرًّا ثُمَّ يَكُونُ حُطَامًا ۖ وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ عَذَابٌ شَدِيدٌ وَمَغْفِرَةٌ مِّنَ اللَّهِ وَرِضْوَانٌ ۚ وَمَا الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا مَتَاعُ الْغُرُورِ

Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.

So mummy has a workshop at Marriott and there was a dinner tonight so she stayed the night tonight and sa khala came to babysit/ sleepover so now the kids are asleep and we were talking and she was telling us about her past life and how she met Abbas uncle and loads of stories about family and her upbringing and school stories and drugs and smoking and friends and peer pressure and boyfriends and mummy and Edinburgh and exams and man it left me feeling kinda sad. Like idk if I feel mehroom that I haven’t done much in my life like all the daring cool stuff (which is stupid) but I think I feel more sad cause there’s so much bad stuff out there - which I obv know about and went through esp when I actually had friends and kinda cared about them and fitting in and stuff - but I was just reminded of the sheer fickleness of the world and people and people in mummys and sa khalas life and the ish they had to go through like stuff wasn’t really different? And also they had a whole world and whole life that they went through and so many people went through that I know nothing about like there’s just so much more than… this. Idk what it is man it just makes me kinda sad. Anyway we talked for like 2 or 3 hours and then I came to bed and started reading quran and the second ayat I read was the one above. Honestly the only thing you can rely on here is Allah and the only path to success from all the paths that one can take in life - drugs, relationships, peer pressure, or like religion and Allah, the only one to success where I feel safe and sure is Allah. All the others I feel amount to you. But with Allah it’s someone greater and higher than you, it’s a selfless love and if I were to choose between me and the Creator and Originator of me and all the bad- and good - things out there imma go with Him. I just don’t trust myself enough and forget about trust, I just can’t live with having only me for myself. I need someone higher to be there. If it was just me I would literally. Spontaneously combust. I cannot comprehend how people can function without religion and without allah. It baffles me man.

I've noticed whenever I'm feeling sad / confused / etc about the concept of the world or life (like that time apa's rishta came lmao and how life is going too fast for me like we is small) I just kinda seek refuge in the Qur'an like it makes me feel safe and protected. Yesterday when that happened (the post I'm reblogging) and most of the time I'm confused about which negative feeling I'm feeling and why, and also that night abbu left /apa's rishta when I wasn't quite sure what the masla with me is (still aren't tbh), I remember just locking the door while crying and sitting against the settee and reading quran. And last night how that ayat came just when I needed it. The Qur'an is so apt man. ❤️

Inside the Coma Cluster of Galaxies : Almost every object in the above photograph is a galaxy. The Coma Cluster of Galaxies pictured above is one of the densest clusters known - it contains thousands of galaxies. Each of these galaxies houses billions of stars - just as our own Milky Way Galaxy does. Although nearby when compared to most other clusters, light from the Coma Cluster still takes hundreds of millions of years to reach us. In fact, the Coma Cluster is so big it takes light millions of years just to go from one side to the other! The above mosaic of images of a small portion of Coma was taken in unprecedented detail in 2006 by the Hubble Space Telescope to investigate how galaxies in rich clusters form and evolve. Most galaxies in Coma and other clusters are ellipticals, although some imaged here are clearly spirals. The spiral galaxy on the upper left of the above image can also be found as one of the bluer galaxies on the upper left of this wider field image. Favorite art I made in 2017

This year has been very rewarding, I’ve grown a lot as an artist, even if I feel stagnant. I’m so proud of everything I’ve accomplished so far! I’m going to try to focus a lot more on my art is 2018, so hopefully it’ll be a great year of growth!
