did you ever see the t&b mini side episodes where the heroes go to barnaby and kotetsu's places? and how they not so subtly hinted that kotetsu was starting to be into curly blonde people? and the super unsubtle date set up for him and barnaby?

OMFG YES I DID. (And I have them bookmarked because of course I do.)

So first off LINKS FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVEN’T SEEN THEM: 

Side Bunny Special (aka the heroes visit Barnaby’s apartment)

Side Tiger Special (aka the heroes visit Kotetsu’s apartment)

Now the Side Bunny Special is super cute, but let’s talk about the Side Tiger Special because oh my God it’s not even subtle.

This is the opening scene, where Kotetsu is worrying because Barnaby is late for meeting him at his apartment. It’s clearly something Kotetsu’s excited about and has been planning for awhile. Then he hears the doorbell ring, is excited Bunny is here, and THIS IS WHAT THEY CUT TO:

Bottle of champagne and two glasses. Because THAT’S a totally typical thing to have set out for when your friend comes over. And then:

Kotetsu is upset when he realizes Bunny’s brought all of their friends over, because:

He wanted it to be just the two of them.

Also, when all the other heroes comment that they’ve never been over to Kotetsu’s place, Barnaby’s quick to say that he’s been over before:

And Kotetsu’s response is:

Just “after work and stuff.” UH-HUH. You look awfully nervous about your friends knowing that you spend a lot of time with your partner, Kotetsu…

And of course Fire Emblem goes snooping and finds some magazines Kotetsu’s saved:

HM WOW KOTETSU WHY DO YOU HAVE A STACK OF MAGAZINES FEATURING A WOMAN WITH GREEN EYES AND CURLY BLOND HAIR

YOU ARE NOT EVEN REMOTELY SLICK. “Ended up liking her for some reason” uh-huh gee wow I wonder what that reason could be

Also, you are correct, the producers absolutely intended to show that Kotetsu’s favorite actress looks like Barnaby. (Just do a ctrl-f for “side Tiger special” on that page.)

(And jeez, I can’t get over that look on Fire Emblem’s face while Kotetsu’s stammering out an explanation; he knows.)

Literally there’s no heterosexual explanation for anything that’s happened in this short and I’m not even a minute and a half into it.

And I can’t actually go much further into it, because it gets a bit spoilery for the series, but you don’t really need to see much more to see that, no, there is absolutely nothing subtle in this 3.5 minutes of animation and it gives me life.

God bless this series, honestly.

Taichi: Aww, don't be like that, Banny! We gotta stick together!

Omi: You've come this far. Are you sure you want to throw all that progress away?

Sakyo: Suit yourself. Just don't even think about setting foot in this dorm again.

Juza: But I'll never let you win, not even if my passion for theater runs dry. And I sure as hell haven't let you win yet.

Sakyo: Let him go, Hyodo. Trying to reason with this piece of work is a waste of all of our time.

Banri: Well, bye.

Teacher: The deadline for submitting is Thursday. Don't forget it.

Banri: ...

Banri: (I don't know what to do for my career path...)

Azumi: "It looks like you'll be accepted into your first choice, T University."

Azumi: "...If you find something you really want to do before graduation you should go for it."

Banri: (Back in my second year, I thought that Mr. Azumi was just spoutin’ nonsense, but now, I can’t bring myself to write anything down, even as a joke.)

Banri: (I joined a theater company and tried acting, but I didn't really understand it. I got irritated with the uncertainty , and quit on impulse...)

Banri: (I had a hunch, but now I’m feeling certain, that my life might be a lot emptier than other people’s.)

Banri: (I was told not to act with a made-up story, but honestly, I never had any major regrets in my life.)

Banri: (I’ve never made a serious decision about anything that would lead to unforgettable regret over my choices.)

Banri: (But I guess it’s different for them...

Banri: (Compared to Hyodo, who I wanted to beat on the same stage, I’ve been living a shallow and empty life for the past 17 years.

Banri: (No, even Yuzo’s old ass and Izumi both said I was in last place.)

Banri: (Maybe my life is more shallow than anyone else's in the group, not just Hyodo’s.)

Banri: (When I thought that, I became afraid of facing that fact. I didn't want to admit it.)

Banri: (...But who cares, it doesn’t matter.)

Banri: (I quit before I knew the results, before I knew the lives of the Autumn Troupe guys. So it’s not like I lost.)

Banri: (The lives of other people don’t actually matter to me...)

Banri: (I think that, so why do I feel irritated?)

Teacher: This workshop is an introductory course on directing. Today, you’ll all be learning the basics of directing.

Banri: (This workshop might be more my speed than the one I went to with Izumi.

Banri: (But there's actually a lot of participants here. Is there really so many people my age wanting to try directing…?)

Teacher: Now, we're going to take a 20 minute break.

Banri: ——Hey.

Student A: ?

Banri: Why did you guys become interested in directing?

Student A: Huh? Oh, well, when you're an actor, you naturally get interested in things like directing.

Student A: I’m not sure which path I’ll take in the future, so I thought it wouldn’t hurt to study both.

Student B: I originally wanted to work behind the scenes, so I thought I should learn about the stage comprehensively

Student C: I don't think I can rely solely on acting, so if I’m going to be involved in theater, I think it’d be crucial to study various aspects of it.

Student D: I originally wanted to direct. After I gain some experience as an actor, I plan to switch to directing and eventually have my own theater company

Banri: Hmm. I see. Everyone has various reasons...

Banri: (I mean, I never had this kind of interest in other people's lives before I started acting.)

Banri: (I used to think anyone other than myself didn’t matter.)

Banri: (The reason why I became interested in other people's lives—)

Banri: If that's all, then—

Izumi: Why don't you see for yourself if you've really beaten Juza, if you're that confident?

Banri: I think our rehearsals are proof enough of that.

Izumi: You haven't seen his portrait, though.

Banri: ...

Izumi: If you REALLY think you've won, then watch it. Then you should know

Banri: I don't need to watch it to know.

Izumi: You sure about that? Because it seems to me like this is all a convenient excuse to avoid having to compete with him in public.

Banri: ..

Banri: Fine, whatever. You want me to stick around and see? You're on.

Banri: Izumi, give it to me straight. How do I beat him?

Izumi: Banri..

Banri: C'mon. What's the trick?

Izumi: First, you have to get your head in the game. After that, all you have to do is want to do well. And something tells me you already meet at least one of those requirements.

Banri: ..

Banri: I dunno what it is, but somethin' about watchin' Hyodo's portrait got me all fired up. Haven't felt this worked up since the time he kicked my ass.

Banri: Oh, this ain't over. Not by a long shot

Banri: Hey, I got an idea. Let's do our portraits.

Izumi: Huh?

Banri: I'm the only one besides you that's seen everybody's portraits, right

Banri: The way I see it, we gotta share 'em with each other sometime, and no better time than right now

Banri: (Without a doubt, it was watching the captivating portraits of the Autumn Troupe that day that had sparked my interest and changed me.)

Banri: (And being part of Mankai Company exposed me to so many quirky lives of others...

Banri: (It’s because Mankai Company was a place full of all sorts of weirdos that I became interested in other people.

Banri: (My heart trembled when I stood in the center as the lead during the Full Bloom performance the other day.)

Banri: (I'm sure that's because deep down, I respect each and every member of that theater company.

Banri: (The reason why I stand on the Mankai Theater stage had already been decided.)

Banri: (...It's because of them that my heart trembles. It won’t work without them.)

Banri: (When I was living a boring life in high school, I never thought my heart would ever feel like this in my life until I died.

Banri: (I'm indebted to Izumi who kept me from leaving back then, and to the Autumn Troupe guys who accepted me once again.)

Banri: (I have to repay that kindness on the stage of that theater.)

Banri: (Until then, I can't stop even if I die.

Banri: Geez... you bought WAY too much. Seriously. We don’t need to buy dishes right now.

Banri's Sister: It's an outlet sale, so you can only buy them now

Banri's Sister: Besides, you’re too weak if you’re already wanting to take a break now.

Banri: The hell do you mean?! You've been dragging me around all day!

Banri's Sister: And as a thank you, I bought you some clothes that suit you didn’t I? And I’m treating you here too.

Banri: Haa.

Banri's Sister: Isn't this kind of place your style anyway? It's a nice and relaxing cafe. Someone told me about it

Banri: My social circle expanded since being in the troupe and art school.

Banri's Sister: That's right. Before, you had all the time in the world, so I took you around to carry my stuff anytime I wanted.

Banri's Sister: But nowadays, you’re always busy with game days, escape rooms, art school stuff, and your weekends are always full, which is super inconvenient.

Banri: Well. maybe you should stop spontaneously dragging me around.

Waitress: Sorry for the wait. Here are your two coffees.

Banri's Sister: ...Delicious.

Banri: Told ya.

Banri's Sister: It kind of pisses me off.

Banri: Why though?

Banri's Sister: Oh, by the way, I stopped by our parent’s house, and on the way out, I saw a postcard addressed to you, so I brought it with me.

Banri: A postcard?

Banri: Oh, it's from Sakuya

Sakuya: "I happened to meet someone on my trip that really surprised me. I'm sure Banri would be surprised as well, so I'll tell you about it when I get back."

Banri: (Someone I'd be surprised by... Who could it be?)

Sakuya: "I will definitely carry the baton that Banri passed to me to the goal. Let's make the full bloom performance a success together!"

Banri: (Of course we will.

Banri's Sister: ...You really have come to laugh with a kind face on, haven't you? It kind of pisses me off.

Banri: Really, what do you mean by that?!

Banri (as Cinderella): “It’s been a while.”

Juza (as Prince): “For real.”

Juza thinking: “Yeah, that’s true.”

Banri (as Cinderella): “I was pretty surprised. Just putting on these shoes made me all pretty looking. Even styled my hair perfectly.”

Banri thinking: “Don’t I look pretty in these high heeled shoes? And I’ve done my hair specially for this date with you. You like what you see, don’t you?”

Juza (as Prince): “Right. Didn’t expect you to come unless I did something like this.”

Juza thinking: “You look so pretty in those shoes, and your hair is beautiful, but no way in hell I’m going to tell you that. I knew that you would come only if I gave you a gift like those high heels.”

Juza (as Prince): “We used to play together a lot in the past, do you remember?”

Juza thinking: “We’ve always had good sex, haven’t we.”

Banri (as Cinderella): “Course I do.”

Banri thinking: “Course we’ve always had good sex ‘cause you had it with me.”

Banri (as Cinderella): “I didn’t know our social status’ were so different back then. But I was genuinely happy while we played together.”

Banri thinking: “But I’ve always genuinely enjoyed having sex with you.”

Juza (as Prince): “I felt the same way. The time I spent hanging out with you is something I haven’t been able to forget till this day.”

Juza thinking: “Yeah, the sex I’ve had with you is really unforgettable.”

Juza (as Prince): “My status has changed since then. Now I have the authority to choose whoever I want to invite to the ball.”

Juza thinking: “I can choose anyone I want to date, but I chose you.”

Juza (as Prince): “And, I wrote that invitation because I was looking for you.”

Juza thinking: “I wrote that invitation letter with my mind set on you.”

Banri (as Cinderella): “If that message wasn’t there, I definitely would’ve thought they delivered it to the wrong address.”

Banri thinking: “If you hadn’t talked to me so sweetly in that letter, I would’ve binned it.”

Juza (as Prince): “The thought came to be just before I sent it out for delivery. I’m glad I wrote it.”

Juza thinking: “I’m glad I’ve expressed my feelings for you in that letter.”

Banri (as Cinderella): “Haha…It feels like I’ve gone back to the old days.”

Banri thinking: “I feel so good with you.”

Juza (as Prince): “Yeah, me too. I lose track of time when I’m with you.”

Juza thinking: “Yeah, me too, I feel good when I’m with you.”

Banri (as Cinderella): “Ah, the date has changed.”

Banri thinking: “Time flies, but we are the same.”

Banri (as Cinderella): “If it’s the shoes, then I’m taking them off.”

Banri thinking: “Then I’ll take off the shoes. Ain’t my bare feet sexy?”

Juza (as Prince): “…Eh? But the magic is still—“

Juza thinking: “…Eh? You look a bit like a cheeky brat now, but still sexy.”

Banri (as Cinderella): “Fu…guess the jig is up.”

Banri thinking: “Now I can stop pretending to be a cutie pie.”

Banri (as Cinderella): “I was also pretty surprised when I put these shoes on in the beginning. I looked like I’d completely become a rich kid. The only thing that changed was my appearance. So I decided that I’d rather stick to making clothes for myself like I usually do. I’m really good at sewing you know. I also tried styling my hair myself.”

Banri thinking: “I’m good at sewing, you know. I can be a good housewife for you. And when for goddamn sake are you going to tell me you like my hair?!”

Banri (as Cinderella): “I thought that if I’m able to enter the castle just ‘cuz my appearance is different, then I’ll definitely be able to sneak in. I tried experimentin’.”

Banri thinking: “I was experimenting with my clothing style, you see.”

Juza (as Prince): “…So that’s what happened.”

Juza thinking: “I do notice changes in your clothing style and hairstyle, but no way in hell I’ll admit to that.”

Banri (as Cinderella): “But I still have the same social standin’, you know. If you ever feel like seein’ me again, make sure to come and meet me… Ouji-sama.”

Banri thinking: “If you feel like hooking up with me, by all means do so. I’m always available for you.”

Juza (as Prince): “Hahaha…can’t be helped, I guess.”

Juza thinking: “Hahaha… I’ll keep that in mind!”

Juza: That’s a coincidence, me too.

Banri: Could it be ‘bout the pair performance?

Juza: Yeah. I thought it’d be a good idea to have a briefin’ session.

Banri: …That’s a pretty strange opinion comin’ from you.

[Later]

Izumi: It’s almost time for your performance guys, are you good to go…?

Banri: Ah—, there ain’t nothin’ to worry about.

Juza: We made sure to have a discussion this time.

Izumi: I’m glad. Well, I’m looking forward to your guys’ performance.

Banri: Yup.

Juza: ‘k.

[On Stage]

Cinderella (Banri): “An invitation to the castles open ball, addressed to me…?”*

Cinderella: “No matter how much I think about it, this is strange. Addressed to a single shabby commoner like myself, there ain’t no way it’s for me.”

Cinderella: “They definitely messed up while delivering’. I’ve been hearin’ that deliverin’ things has gotten pretty difficult lately.”

Cinderella: “…Hm? Lookin’ closer, there seems to be a message written here.”

Cinderella: “This…is the Prince’s handwritin’.”

Cinderella: “…‘I’m givin’ you these magical glass slippers, so wear them and come meet me. Let’s talk like we used to.’”

Cinderella: “This message, and the way these letters are written…it can’t be.”

Cinderella: “Fu…well if the Ouji-sama* is summonin’ me, guess I have to go.”

[Later]

Cinderella: “…That’s one huge castle. It’s so fancy that my eyes feel like they’re flickerin’.”

Cinderella: “Oh, there he is.”

Prince (Juza): “…I was waitin’.”

Cinderella: “It’s been a while.”

Prince: “For real.

Cinderella: “I was pretty surprised. Just puttin’ on these shoes made me all pretty lookin’. Even styled my hair perfectly.”

Prince: “Right. Didn’t expect you to come unless I did somethin’ like this.”

Prince: “We used to play together a lot in the past, do you remember?”

Cinderella: “‘Course I do.”

Cinderella: “I didn’t know our social status’ were so different back then. But I was genuinely happy while we played together.”

Banri: We made sure to have a briefin’ session so it wouldn’t turn into somethin’ weird.

Banri: …Well, with askin’ other people for advice, and usin’ our companies previous plays, I ended up refrencin’ a lot of things.

Izumi: But, that’s exactly what acting is all about. There’s no right or wrong answer.

Banri: You ain’t wrong.

Banri: Right. Let’s hurry up and take the picture before we forget.

[Takes Picture]

Izumi: You’ve already decided on what pose to do, huh.

Banri: It’s cuz I’d already made up my mind.

Juza: …There ain’t any Cinderella feelin’.

Banri: Hah? You’re one to talk.

Izumi: Ahaha…I guess you can say the theme was unexpected?

Juza: That’s…

Banri: I’d rather not deal with this guy if possible.

Juza: That’s my line.

*Banri uses the first person pronoun 俺(Ore) here, which is usually used by men. He uses it for the rest of the performance, if that helps with anything 😭

*王子 (おうじ) Ouji is the word for Prince in Japanese, so I used the Romanized version here to emphasize that Cinderella (Banri) used “sama” (the honorific used after the name of a high ranking person, or someone you admire) to call the Prince (Juza) “Ouji-sama” (which he didn’t say earlier, but will say again)
