If I ever have to sing in a campaign where I play a bard, the DM requires that I sing. Sometimes I make up something on the spot, other times I use a song that’s just on my mind.
Me: I start a fascinating performance, the song sounds like John Cage’s 4'33". DM: Okay, sing. Me: (silence) DM: Dude, go or skip your turn. Druid, who is a music nerd as much as I am: He is, 4'33" is four minutes 33 seconds of silence. DM: So you’re just standing there with a lute in hand having a staring contest with an Orc. Me: Yea. Druid: Orcs are pretty dumb. DM: I’m letting this one slide.

I’m on medication that can make me spacey af, which can be a problem when I’m driving–like yesterday, for example, when my best friend was trying to help me avoid a pothole he said “to the left,” and I just mumbled “take it back now y'all” and hit the pothole straight on

This made my day.
Yes a million times yes
This is the cast of the hit TV comedy Brooklyn Nine Nine:
It is a well-rounded cast. The characters are different people with different dreams and goals and personalities and priorities, and they work together.
These two are Amy Santiago and Rosa Diaz, two Latina women:
Although they are both Latina women, they are very different characters. Amy is a nerdy, easily-excited perfectionist and Rosa is a blunt, tough-as-nails badass.
If I were to ask “what’s your opinion of the Latina character on Brooklyn Nine Nine”, you would have to respond with “which one?”.
These two are Captain Raymond Holt and Terry Jeffords, two black men:
Although they are both black men, they are very different characters. Captain Holt is strict and humourless, Terry is a musclebound teddy bear.
If I were to ask “what’s your opinion of the black man on Brooklyn Nine Nine”, you would have to respond with “which one?”.
A lot of people don’t like “tokenism” in fiction. And, it’s true, if you’re adding in a black character just for the sake of representing all black people in your fiction, it can be an example of poor writing.
But, when you watch Brooklyn Nine Nine, none of the characters above feel like token characters.
Now, if I were to remove Amy Santiago from the show, many people might think of Rosa as the token Latina. And, as the only Latina, many people might think that she was there to represent all Latina women. They might say “Is that really what you think all Latina women are like? That they all wear leather jackets and grunt in monosyllables and beat people senseless? What a terrible stereotype!”
If I were to remove Captain Holt from the show, many people might think of Terry as the token black man. And, as the only black man, many people might think that he was there to represent all black men. They might say “Is that really what you think all black men are like? That they’re all vain, overmuscled behemoths, tamed into domesticity? What a terrible stereotype!”.
It is precisely because the show features multiple examples of each of these demographics that they escape stereotyping. If you see one Latina woman who exhibits aggressive traits, you might think that all Latina women have anger management problems. If you see two Latina women, though, and one is aggressive and the other isn’t, you would not reach that conclusion. It would be impossible for someone to watch an episode of Brooklyn Nine Nine and come away thinking “ah yes, now I know what all Latina women are like” or “ah yes, now I know what all black men are like”.
It is fine not to approve of tokenism in fiction. It’s fine! Including a character purely to check that character’s ethnicity or gender or disability or sexuality off of a checklist can be terrible writing. Token characters can perpetuate negative stereotypes, or even help to create new ones.
But, if you don’t like token characters, the answer isn’t less diversity.
It’s more.
Feminist Hacker Barbie is a gift. :)
holy shit this is amazing, i wan to read more
This is fairly hilarious
The fact that there’s people who honestly think it’s completly fine to self diagnose yourself with autism makes me dead inside and lose all faith in the human.
p sure u just self diagnosed urself being dead inside ya dingus
idk if u know this buddy but when it comes to mental health shit, literally all that psychologists and psychiatrists do is. use a checklist off the internet. and see if the symptoms exhibited match the checklist. the “are you autistic?” quizzes on webmd is essentially all that a professional is going to do my guy
Wrong. A doctor has the training and education to be able to differentiate between disorders and ailments that have similar symptoms. They are also educated as to how medications may affect a person differently based on family history, diet, current medications (which can conflict with other medications, and possibly cause serious reactions), whether you have an exercise regimen, what your sleeping patterns are, your stress level, and even your body type. The doctor is also aware of whatever alergies or conditions you may have, and what medications might exacerbate them (for example, my mother can’t take certain anti-depressant supplements because of her heart).
When you try to self diagnose, you are working from a bias. You are trying to prove to yourself that you have something. You are not in a position to view your symptoms objectively, and determine if there are possibly other causes. Doctors are not even allowed to diagnose THEMSELVES. Like, a person seeking out something specific is going to ignore other possible problems, and that can end up being incredibly detrimental to one’s health. Also, you do realize that your brain can just mess with you, right? It’s called the “Placebo Effect”: A patient given a pill can manifest or alleviate their own symptoms, even if all they were given was a sugar pill. On top of that, you’re only working from your OWN experiences, so you have nothing to compare to.
Lastly, if you self-diagnose, you cannot receive any form of treatment for it, period. No one will prescribe medications or counseling if you are not properly diagnosed. If you do not WANT help in managing your symptoms, then WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO DIAGNOSE THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE?
Mental illness is not a trend. It is not a desirable trait. It is not something you can throw on like a scarf in order to feel “unique”. It is a life-long struggle. STOP TRIVIALIZING IT.
A million times yes to this. Self Diagnosis is the worst thing you can do. If you suspect you have an issue see a real doctor who can determine what the problem is and help you figure out how best to handle it.
Faragrimm
-Sits down at the fire. His current companions, the members of the traveling and quite tiny magic act/circus/sideshow he created, gathered around after a successful night that brought in about 10 silver pieces laughing and enjoying a meal together.-
One of his newest members, a sword swallower with a penchant for ending up needing healing after his act, looks up at him having yet to really talk to the gnome with a flair for the gaudy with a quizzical look on his face. “So Mr. "Fantastic” I know we haven’t had much time to chat but exactly where do you come from? I mean everyone else has told me their story, some honestly told me more than I ever wanted to know but from what I understand you weren’t always running around with a rag tag group of carneys leading a show nobody wants to see. What brought you here?“ Everyone else grew quiet as they also hoped to finally hear the tale of the intrepid gnome who brought them together.
-Removing his long red jacket with the gaudy gold adornments to make himself more comfortable he smiled his grey green eyes shining with fire light, the age seemed to melt away as his mind began to recall a time in his youth before he opened the menagerie; a time when his combed back silver hair had some color to it and his pointed beard had less of a curl to the bottom.-
You wanna know about me eh? Well you’re not the first "rag tag” group of friends I’ve had the pleasure to call mine. Many years ago I was friends with a shape-changer, one of the best men I ever knew. He had a quiet and stoic ferocity to him and was more cool-headed and reasonable in a pinch than I could ever hope to be. On top of that I had the closest thing to a daughter I could ever be so fortunate to have. She was one of the most gifted mages of our time, though none of you would ever have met her. She was as quick to ignite as myself and just as bull headed! Then their was mule an animal with more personality than any of those expensive horses you see the nobility riding. He was their helping to pull our home along the roads -gestures over his shoulder at the oldest traveling cart in the menagerie- I still have that cart couldn’t go on without it.
The group remained quiet as they listened “So you were an adventurer than?" The sword swallower asked.
Oh yes adventuring was what we did. We Journeyed across this continent, we ransacked dungeons, fought Demons, Monsters, People, investigated murders. Why me and those friends of mine got into all manner of trouble together.
-Faragrimm laughed as he watched the others around the fire hoping he would reveal more to them about the adventures he went on
The sword swallower looked at him "Come on tell us a real story if you’ve done so much”
-Faragrimm looked up at him and began to think and as he thought more specifically on his adventures age seemed to not only return to his face but advance in the firelight his eyes showed just how much his soul ached as he remembered and missed those dearest friends
No, I’d rather not come to think of it. Those days are behind me. That mule dead and those friends…..
-He trailed off looking like he was trying to bring himself to say the last part of the sentence-
Anyways I’m just an old gnome; what do my stories matter? I’m exhausted from the days work so I’ll be off to bed. I’ll see you all in the morning my friends and we will get on with heading to our next town!
-Faragrimm stood up coat under his arm and walked slowly back to his cart. As he entered he cast a fire charm with a flourish of his hand and his old beat up wand igniting the oil lamp near the bunk. The warm glow of light shined across the old worn furniture. He walked to a low cabinet opening it pulling out a small oak box the lid engraved with gnomish runes. Within it was a drawing he had done on a visit to a town that no longer stood and there they were his friends Atrima and Elian standing on either side of him both bearing forced grins obviously force to stand by while the picture was drawn. Dwarfed by them Faragrimm looked so much younger and happy as a clam smiling in front of his cart. It was the only thing he had left of them; one last momento to prove they were real and that he hadn’t made them up. He smiled once more setting it back in the box and preparing for bed and with a simple “goodnight old friends” he snuffed out the light-
The Ugly Truth of Beauty and the Beast
Now, I know what you are going to say. “But Faragrimm Everyone knows the problem with that movie is it’s an example of Stockholm syndrome” but to that I say bah! That’s right I say BAH! People don’t realize that, while Bell is in fact a victim in all this, the real criminal is not the beast. The criminal in this movie is The “Enchantress” (obviously she is good we don’t call her a witch!) who creates the curse. Why, you may ask (or you may not), because she unfairly cursed a child prince to a lifetime of misery and woe, as well as all of the people who happened to serve under him. Let us break down why her curse, which is played off as an attempt to teach a cold “man” to love and be loved, is the real crime here.
First, we have an entire castle of people, be them cooks, maids, children, butlers, or advisers, that have been forcibly turned into items of a non human variety. While I get that maybe one or two of these people could be held responsible for the prince being raised improperly, I’m looking at you Lumiere and Cogworth, but is it really the dogs fault? Or, in the case of Mrs. Potts’ son, a child’s? Instead of using a curse that would punish the individual who had committed the offense against her, the “Enchantress” (witch) decided that everybody who happened to work in the castle deserved to be punished as well. Which, if the prince is that bad means that she is forcing people who likely only work there to make ends meat and feed their families, to pay penance for there employer’s slight.
Secondly, her reasoning for punishing the prince is really poor and, in fact, she is punishing a child. Based on the prologue for the film it seems fairly reasonable, a cold-hearted prince turns away a woman because she is ugly. The stained glass shows the prince is clearly an adult but this is not the reality of the situation as it had occurred. We can look to the movie and one particular song as proof enough. The curse is set up so the rose will bloom till the prince’s 21st year at which point he is expected to have found true love or he, and again the innocent people unlucky enough to work for him, are forever screwed. Now, some might argue, that the number is in relation to how many years the curse has been active for, but the song “Be Our Guest” cements the fact that the curse is in reference to age not time frame. The damning line is:
Ten years we’ve been rusting Needing so much more than dusting Needing exercise, a chance to use our skills!
So, since one can infer that guests stopped visiting the castle pretty much as soon as the curse was placed on its inhabitants, that line proves it has not been 21 years since the curse was created, but only 10. That means that when the “Enchantress” cast the spell on the vain prince, he was 11. That’s right folks this kindly “enchantress” felt that an 11 year old should understand romantic love and not judge people. At 11 the prince hasn’t even hit puberty, yet she is holding him to a standard in relation to love that he has no understanding of and probably won’t really begin to understand for, roughly, two years.
Thirdly, and finally, we have a prince, a member of nobility, and the hundreds of staff that support him in his massive castle, located very near Bell’s home town (at the least between the town and the next major city) that 10-21 years before the start of the film was a place people could actively visit. So then why is everyone in town shocked to find out about this castle with a great beast? Shouldn’t they have wondered why they stopped hearing from the nearby nobility since, I’m almost positive, the castle got at least some of its goods from the town. Instead of wondering 10-21 years before the movie why they never hear from the castle anymore they seem to not be aware of it at all. It seems a 3rd unmentioned part of the curse in question made it so people no longer knew they had a prince or a castle nearby. If that is the case how can the prince ever learn of true love when not a single person is going to ever stumble upon the castle? Is he expected to fall in love with some bone china or what?
Here we go the final recap of what we have covered! The beautiful “enchantress” cursed all of the support staff off a prince who, realistically, only worked in the castle to make ends meat and had nothing to do with how he was being reared, as punishment for the princes vain behavior trapping them in forms that were actively less useful to the child’s growing up and learning. She also decided to cast the curse simply because an 11 year old boy didn’t understand true beauty beyond just initial appearances. Finally, she made sure nobody would ever stumble upon the castle by erasing it from everyone’s memory; making it nearly impossible for her curse to be broken since the beast would never run into someone to fall in love with, short of complete and utter random happenstance. It sounds less like she was a benevolent enchantress trying to teach a human a good life lesson, and more like a sadistic witch who got her kicks pretending she was justified in making a whole lot of people miserable by using the smallest possible offense as probable cause. It sounds like a certain enchantress needs to spend some time as a magical child rearing book so that she can actually figure out an appropriate response to a child’s offenses.

reminder that i didnt draw this comic (and is constantly mis-attributed to me) and that also its still relevant
I happen to know some folks of all these descriptions. They’re called “reasonable.” Everyone should know more “reasonable” people.
That one trans person in the second row is me, and everyone gives me shit. “But why???” “Because there’s more to my fucking personality than me gender/oppression status, and what we’re creating is just a different kind of circus.
yep, first person in the second row, my status as a person and interests are not my gender, plus, talking about trans shit makes me depressed, let’s talk videogames

The Ugly Truth of Beauty and the Beast
Now, I know what you are going to say. “But Faragrimm Everyone knows the problem with that movie is it's an example of Stockholm syndrome” but to that I say bah! That's right I say BAH! People don't realize that, while Bell is in fact a victim in all this, the real criminal is not the beast. The criminal in this movie is The “Enchantress” (obviously she is good we don't call her a witch!) who creates the curse.
