“What do you mean?”
I think things are making a change for the better.
tatiana-obrien:
“I suddenly feel like I should be doing something with my life hearing someone with a nineteen year old child.“ She laughed. “Does he work on your farm or do you keep him away from it for now?“
If it means anything, I had him when I was in high school. Not like I had him at a good time in my life. But he works on the farm, as much as he says he hates it.
tatiana-obrien:
“Nineteen?? You don’t even look old enough to have kids! What are you chugging to look so youthful you bastard.“
Yeah, yeah I know. My parents said the same thing.
tatiana-obrien:
“You have children?“
Two. Quinn’s nineteen, and Vivian’s a year and a few months now.
tatiana-obrien:
“You are too hopeful. It’s endearing, but difficult for others to be.“
Hey, I’m just hoping for a life that my son and daughter can actually live in. Not just survive.
tatiana-obrien:
“It’s just hard to trust that it’s over or getting better. I mean, I’ve seen those things, they aren’t exactly the type to just lay down and go into extinction.“
Yeah, but who knows?
tatiana-obrien:
“Maybe.“
Don’t look too excited.
bella-trower:
“That’s good right? Maybe there can be good supply runs then?”
Maybe we won’t need supply runs sooner than later.
tatiana-obrien:
“You should knock on wood.”
Maybe I should. But maybe things are getting better.
Late Nights || David and Charlotte
lottiegiles:
Mr. Gray’s bluntness made Lottie go quiet. There was truth in that and it scared her and made her worry in a way she hadn’t in the barn before. She straightened up as he continued. “I don’t want to put you out at all, Mr. Gray. You or your family.” It was such a kind offer and it meant a lot to Charlotte. Still the thought of sleeping in an actual room with an actual blanket was appealing.
It was almost more than appealing but she was fully prepared to spend the night in the barn. Putting anyone out wasn’t something that Charlotte would feel comfortable with. “I’m not sure Quinn’d be all to happy t’see me and I don’t want to put out your wife either. Y’all are already so nice giving me a job and everything when I was so young.”
David shook his head at her thinking that it would put them out. As a whole, it ultimately wouldn’t. Leah would bitch and moan, but that was just a common thing that she did about almost anything that she didn’t agree with one hundred percent.
“It’s fine, we wouldn’t be put out. Quinn wouldn’t have an issue either. But I don’t want you to stay with us if you don’t want to,” he said, giving her a genuine out in that. Ultimately, David wanted her to deny based off what she wanted — not if it was going to put him and his family out.
tatiana-obrien:
“Do you want it to be worse or something?“
Absolutely not. I just think maybe things are getting better, there’s no big hordes of them coming into the farm. Mostly lone stragglers.
tatiana-obrien:
“Go outside the gates and see how quiet it is.“
My farm and home are right out there. I think it could be a lot worse.
I’m shocked at how quiet it is, on the mayor’s front and the infected’s front. It just doesn’t feel right.
kai-woolley-pt:
“As much as I hate to suggest it, maybe it would be good if the mayor beefed up armed guard patrols around the farms. Make it safer to work.”
It would be smart, but who’s to say they won’t start controlling everything that I do over there?
kai-woolley-pt:
“You can’t blame me for not wanting to starve to death.”
It’s not like anyone here wants to starve to death, Kai.
Late Nights || David and Charlotte
lottiegiles:
“’m fine up here. Really. I don’t think they can climb too good.” Charlotte answered. Trying to keep her tone light. After everything that had happened it was starting to feel like some of the ease she used to have was becoming harder and harder to find. “Y’all live here after all, so it’s gotta be safe, right?” Charlotte wondered if Mr. Gray knew what had happened in town. He must have. Word traveled fast and a break-in was something that no one could stop talking about.
For a moment, the young girl debated lying to her boss as well, but she’d known him so long–and his family employed her father before his accident too–that she couldn’t bring herself to do it. “I just…can’t sleep at home anymore. Not any good anyway. After the Purge–when all those sick people came through Shady Grove and I left here and I said I was goin’ to the hospital for my brother, I–”
Charlotte’s voice cracked and she had to take a deep breathe before continuing but everything else still came out in a muddled rush. “I went home instead because I had to make sure my dad was alright but he wasn’t. They got him, Mr. Gray, and he wasn’t alright. He was all torn up and–”
It felt like Charlotte couldn’t breathe and she couldn’t get words out anymore. Instead she sucked in air trying to calm herself and pulled the neck of her shirt up to wipe her face. “I jus’ didn’t want to go home again, I’m sorry.”
“Safe, yeah, but only because I know how to put those things down if they get close enough.”
David quickly frowned when he heard what had happened to the young girl’s father. He couldn’t imagine the pain of losing someone like that, at least in such a brutal manner. But he didn’t know the right way to comfort in this situation. He tried before with Julien, who lost his long-time boyfriend. This was only slightly different, and it was just as hard to comfort.
“Look, you don’t have to stay in our barn if you can’t stay at home,” he said to her, letting out a weak sigh. “We have a spare room in the house. We were planning on turning it into Vivian’s room when she got older and didn’t need to share with Quinn — but you can sleep there if you need to. For the time being.”
David didn’t know whether or not Leah would be on board for adding in another person to the sleeping arrangements, even if it was just for a stray night or two, but he would deal with the consequences of his offer later. “At least you’d be indoors, a helluva lot safer than in this barn.”
Late Nights || David and Charlotte
lottiegiles:
The moon was bright enough that Charlotte could see the entire expanse of the farm from her hiding place up in the rafters of the barn. She positioned herself so she could see out some spaces along the side of the roof. It wasn’t often that she broke rules but about four hours prior she had told David Gray–the owner of the farm she worked at–goodnight, and headed back home. Except instead of actually going home, she walked down the long driveway and waited until he had gone back towards his home, and then she turned and looped back around.
Staying at home was just hard now. Lottie would have nightmares and wake up with her heart pounding. Her brother tried to help. They stayed in the living room and he patched up the things broken. He even tried to tear out the carpet in their father’s room but the evidence remained. Today she lied and told him that there was a baby goat on the farm that needed to be bottle fed every two hours. She said that Quinn had the flu real bad and so his parents were busy helping him out. It was easy to believe that Lottie had offered to stay over to take care of a baby animal.
She knew she’d sleep better in a mess of hay than where her father died. She thought she was going to get away with it too until the light turned on at the house and she saw a figure walk to the barn. Lottie hoped it was Quinn. He’d definitely tell his father, she was sure, but it was more likely he was just leaving to leave than to find out who was moving around the top level of the barn. Instead it was her boss, David Gray, and Lottie felt a weight in her stomach as he entered. Rather than let him assume she was a malicious intruder of any kind she called out, “so this means you’re a werewolf.” It was a bad joke, sure, but she hoped it would ease any anger the man had. “Ya know…comin’ out here during the full moon an’ all, Mr. Gray…”
Farming was a hassle to David. Not that he wanted to admit it. He was exhausted, his bones and muscles ached, and he had to worry about keeping his entire family safe outside of the walls on top of it. Every stray zombie that patrol didn’t get would have to be put down by him — and while it was getting easier to kill them by the day, he didn’t like doing it. He enjoyed just going to his home and actually resting. Leah made him dinner if she was home for once, he was able to spend a quick minute with Quinn and Vivian.
But tonight was different. Maybe it was the moon, maybe it was the general stress, but he couldn’t sleep. He’d decided to head out to the barn, get things ready for the next day. At least he would make use of his time.
David was surprised to see the young blonde there, but he wasn’t about to go and scold her for hiding out. “What are you doing here still, Charlotte?” he asked, keeping his tone gentle and far from aggressive. “You know it’s not safe outside these walls, especially at night.”
He tried his best to search his brain for any kind of reason why she’d want to stay on his farm rather than inside the safety of the walls.
