New interdisciplinary research suggests that Beringia was a refuge during the last ice age. The benign oceanic influence of the North Pacific’s circulation brought moister and warmer conditions to the land bridge, modern models show. Beringia was a new homeland whose temperatures were about the same of modern times’ and who supported a remarkably huge biomass of mammals. The Bering Strait was a wonderful hunting ground, while the rest of the world (including nearby northern Asia) became much more treeless and deserts expanded. The pictures you had in your head were wrong. Beringia, far from being akin to the farthest edges of Siberia, was the Ice Age people’s paradise.
