He believed her, just like that? Sontna was shocked, but... grateful. He seemed to be the only one of the three to not look at her with suspicion. Maybe he'd just gotten particularly good at hiding it.

... Or his explanation would work, too.

She couldn't quite hide her look of surprise, her head canting slightly to the side, ears shifting. It was difficult to hold a conversation, knowing what was just outside the door, but she'd have to keep functioning.

"I didn't know studying magic was part of being a Templar... I thought it was just—" Well, she'd thought some rather unflattering things about what being a Templar would entail. "— nullifying magic and swordsmanship." The apology drew a soft sigh, and Sontna shook her head. "I'll do my best," she said quietly, her voice falling lower. "I might have done the same thing in her position." She frowned. "As long as Norrim was unharmed while I was out..." She would have preferred untraumatized, but... that ship had long sailed.

"...Depends on the templar." That may have been considered extracurricular study. Cullen had joined because he wanted to protect people, the mages included. A knot formed in the pit of his stomach, and he glanced away for a moment, staring down at the table. He knew that in Kirkwall he had been... well, it didn't matter now, did it?

"I've always believed it's best to understand something, before you try to fight it. Nullifying magic can of course be done without studying the magic itself, but... it's easier, to know how to nullify it if you know what it is."

At her mention of Norrim, Cullen nodded. The child had been... upset by the turn of events, of course, but they'd done what they could. Cullen scratched the back of his head awkwardly. None of them were particularly great with children. "She was unharmed, I promise. I think she was rather enjoying herself, truthfully. Not that she wasn't worried of course, but she got to ask Varric as many questions as she liked." Cullen smiled faintly at the memory. "She may have worn him out, and that is saying something."

Tamlen stood at his full height, although the human in front of him still had more than a few inches on him. It took more energy than his was willing to admit to stand here, tainted as he was. And he still had a whole trial to go through? He didn't even want to be here.

Fucking shem.

"You must be Alistair." It wasn't a question. He'd met the other two warden recruits, so that only left one other to meet. "Shall we get this over with?"

Tamlen ached, down to the very marrow of his bones. The excursion through the eluvian (had it been an eluvian? he'd never seen one and wouldn't know) had left him blighted and broken, barely able to stand on his own two feet.

But stand he did. Because what else could he do?

He followed the aching thread of the taint, pulling him closer and closer to... something. He didn't know what. But he knew he had to follow it. To reach the end of it. Even as it lead him towards a human army. He stayed out of sight best he could, until his eyes alighted on someone he recognized.

"Varnan!" The name tumbled out of his mouth in relief. "How are you-why are you-" But he supposed it didn't matter. How were either of them here? Tied together by the very thing that was killing them?

Tamlen didn't know. But relief flowed through him, feeling like a soothing breeze on a warm summers day, and that was enough for now.

"Lethallin, I thought I'd never see you again."

Tamlen eyed the other elf warily. The lack of Vallaslin marked them a city elf, different from the Dalish Tamlen had grown up with.

But they were a warden. And the loneliness that had began to gnaw at him, since he'd left his clan, eased, if only slightly. Perhaps they didn't know what it meant to be Dalish. But they still knew what it meant to be an elf, in this world.

"Wouldn't head that way, if I were you," he offered, pointing back towards Ostagar. "Nothing left but death and darkspawn." Tamlen tried to smile, but it probably came out more like a grimace. "We barely escaped ourselves."

And the how of that escape was still a topic of contention. But Tamlen had never been one to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Didn't mean he had to trust the Witch. Nor the daughter she'd sent with them.
