help me remember: not everything in life is a battle. i don’t need to carry a knife everywhere i go. help me learn: how to shed my armor without shedding tears. how to open up my arms without raising my fists. help me understand: i can be vulnerable, and still be strong. i can be made of steel, and still be soft. help me realize: if life is a battle, i don’t have to fight it alone.

LET’S take a second to acknowledge Sae’s lapel pin, shall we ?
I only noticed it for the first time half an hour ago, I have to admit… It took me some searching, but ultimately the answer should’ve been painfully fucking obvious — it’s indicative of a prosecutor in Japan. To elaborate: in Japan, lapel pins have great significance when it comes to the justice system. There are numerous kinds ( Sae’s is on the top row, third from the left ), & they all distinguish one’s position. Sae’s therefore designates her position as a prosecutor, & it’s one of the most complex in design. It contains white chrysanthemum petals ( symbolic of devotion / a devoted love ), gold leaves, & a red morning sun in the center ( self-explanatory ). As a whole, this pin is meant to evoke dedication, consistent principles, & harsh punishment, all of which to be expected of their prosecutors.
In Japan, these lapel pins are, without exaggeration, badges of honor. They aren’t your typical, run-of-the-mill pins that can easily be discarded & replaced, or only worn for formal occasions; they technically aren’t even property of the individual to which it’s given, & are actually property of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations — to be returned if disbarred, convicted of a crime or declared bankrupt or dead. They have an attorney number specific to the individual engraved on the back, as well as a symbol indicative of how many pins they’ve had to replace ( ie first pin, second pin, etc. ). Losing a “badge” is not only time-consuming, but notices of lost pins are publicly posted in the Kanpo — the Japanese government’s official gazette. Although ID cards are integrated now as well, for quite some time, these pins were the only way to confirm one’s status — incredibly important considering the amount of power & authority some offices hold compared to others; technically, practice rules still require these to be worn when performing one’s duties.
An interesting side note; although my PSD makes it look otherwise, Sae’s pin is silver. Prosecution pins actually start out gold, as seen in that photo, but the gold wears away unless one pays extra for a ‘real’ gold pin. The silver is indicative of one’s veteran status , & some lawyers even do things like carry their pins in their coin purse to speed up the aging process. Sae hasn’t been in her prosecutor position for more than a few years, so she’s likely guilty of doing this quite often during the first year or so as well. It’s also interesting to note that it’s a common practice for lawyers to wear their pins backwards — that is, with the back facing out to the observer — so that it only takes a simple flick of the lapel to confirm their status. Sae’s decision to wear hers out in the open is a very deliberate one, & it has nothing to do with fashion; she’s commented to Makoto on at least one occasion that a woman can only accomplish so much without authority, & whether perceived or in actuality ( most likely both ), Sae is in a position where she needs to make sure her authority is never in question — & constantly in the forefront of the minds of those she works with, for, or against.

Persona 5 Aesthetic: Sae Niijima
“ Still, I’m glad I was able to save you in court. I’ve never felt so happy in my entire life. I’m not quite sure how to put it, but… saving your future meant more to me than my own career. I feel like you even taught me how to live.“
I became good at pretending. I became so good that after a while the lines blurred between my truth and fiction. And sometimes, when I did a really good job of pretending, I even fooled myself.
