shinkichi did show up alone. that’s one anxiety abated, pierre thinks with palpable relief. he doesn’t relax, though, despite how relaxed shinkichi seems given... everything.
“ regretting running off like that, or...?? ”
it’s been a long few months since pierre left without warning; it’s been months since they’ve last seen each other. he’d left without warning and by leaving hastily - written notes for the few people he thought might care. they weren’t very good notes, either.
“ it’s not that, ” pierre finally answers, and that’s it. until shinkichi doesn’t say anything and he realizes he probably owes him a little more than that, anyway. but he has time until he has to be back to where he’s meeting sylvie, so he won’t rush into things. “ the fatui are after me. ”
shinkichi scoffs. “ no shit. ” his hand slides out of one of his coat pockets and he’s tossing something pierre’s way. the former secretary barely catches it — the weight surprises him and he almost drops it even after it lands in his hands. he’s smiling. “ more bullets. you need them, right?? ” pierre’s stunned expression is question enough, and he continues as he shoves his hand back into his pocket. “ why else would you want to see me again?? because you miss me?? el oh el. ” and now he’s laughing as he shakes his head, turning on the stilts of one geta to pace with lanky, unbothered strides. “ you need help. ”
he’s right, and pierre won’t argue that. “ who’s authorizing the search?? ”
shinkichi shrugs, pivoting once more to look at him again. “ dunno. ” so not dottore. “ someone higher - up, i think. could be someone lower, though. dottore doesn’t care, if that’s what you’re worried about. he seemed... ” he flounders, head see - sawing temporarily as he searches for the word. “ proud?? of you for leaving like that. ” another shrug, this one to brush off some of the light - heartedness he’s carrying with him. “ it’s a head hunt though, so watch yourself, pierre. ”
a head hunt. a death warrant. whoever’s after him for defecting is after him for defecting as a principle, not because they want him back. it’s about what he expected. “ i am, but it’s... we’re running out of places to hide. ”
pierre’s grateful when shinkichi doesn’t ask who else is included within we. he probably knows, if he knows about the search being a head hunt. he watches in silence as he crosses the distance between them all - too - casually, hands still in his pockets. “ so what do you want from me?? ”
“ help. tips. where are they not looking?? where is safe?? ” pierre has to tilt his gaze upwards as shinkichi moves closer to keep their eyes locked despite the height difference.
once more, shinkichi pulls a hand from his pocket — but this time he’s holding a definitely not paper - thin envelope between his index and middle fingers. “ i just need one thing from you, pierre. just one. ”
and pierre already knows what it is before it’s asked of him.
he’s early on his way back, so he stops off at a little bakery to get a sweet pastry for sylvie. it’s not much, but it’s something for her patience. his right hand grips the paper of the bag holding the treat, and his left grips the thick envelope in his jacket pocket.
“ what did any of that mean to you?? ”
pierre doesn’t answer right away, and shinkichi watches him patiently.
“ i — i don’t know, ” comes the answer finally, and it’s brutal in its simple honesty. it hurts to say.
then it’s shinkichi’s turn to be silent, his green eyes searching pierre’s grey ones. he finds his answer there after a while, but it’s not a happy one if the somber shift of his expression is any indication.
when his lips meet pierre’s, it’s different than the previous kisses they’ve shared in how practically chaste it is.
pierre stands frozen still as shinkichi draws back just enough to whisper, “ sorry i can’t be there when you find yourself someday, ” only to draw back quickly and completely and spin on one sandal to begin to walk off, leaving the envelope tucked into pierre’s hand. he waves over his shoulder. “ good luck, pierre, ” he calls, not looking back.
and pierre remains frozen in place for a few more heartbeats before he manages to break it with a small yell after the other. “ shinkichi!! i... thank you. for everything. ”
shinkichi’s steps falter just slightly, but that’s his only reaction beyond a little shrug as he shoves his hands into his pockets once more.
he only opened the envelope once shinkichi was gone, and its contents were far more than he’d hoped for: areas the fatui aren’t bothering to search, some leads to those known to harbor anti - fatui sentiments, and a not - insignificant amount of mora.
