John didn’t really know how they ended up like this. He’d been drifting in and out of sleep for a while, but hadn’t become fully conscious until this ungodly hour in the night. He hadn’t noticed anything until now. That he’d fallen asleep on the couch. That Sherlock was cuddled right next to him, sandwiched between him and the sofa. His hand pressed right up against John’s chest, sure to have felt his now erratic heart if he had been awake, too. Sherlock’s breathing, the rise and fall of his chest against John’s back, his hot, even breaths on John’s neck—all things John was now entirely too aware of. Rational John would have gotten up and headed upstairs to go back to sleep. Rational John would have been very uncomfortable with the whole situation. Whatever John was present right now was obviously not Rational John. Because under the blankets in the cozy heat, fitting perfectly against Sherlock’s lean body, he didn’t move. He took a deep breath, inhaling the moment. Smiling softly to himself, he let his eyelids droop shut and fell deeply asleep.
