Rinse TV: Animated Idents Briefing Doc.

Introduction: This is a briefing document giving guidance when creating animated idents for Rinse TV.

The aim of this document is to highlight the Rinse brand identity guidelines that you need to work within; whilst allowing you to be as creative and individual as possible with your ideas.

The Project:

- To produce a 5 second introductory ident for ‘Rinse TV’. To be used at the beginning of Rinse TV features.

- Idents must be based on the creative concept (see below), and they should adhere to the ‘Rinse Brand Identity Guidelines’ (supplied as a separate PDF), in terms of colour palette and typography.

- No audio should be used.

- Idents don’t need to show any text other than the Rinse TV logo.  - The end frame of each ident should resolve on the ‘Rinse TV’ logo, so that it is sitting absolutely central within the screen, and the screen’s safe area; and it should be visible on-screen for at least 1.5 secs.  - The end frame ‘Rinse TV’ logo size must = 540px diameter (see below).

Creative Concept:

As you will see from the ‘Rinse Brand Identity Guidelines’ the use of circles is an important feature of the Rinse brand. One of the strongest and most recognisable elements of the identity is the circular Rinse ‘R’ icon. As well as that, the ‘Rinse TV’ logo is also circular.

And this leads us to the central, unifying concept for these idents: Circles.

Your idents should explore, interpret and include circles.

Whether they take the form of Rinse ‘R’ icons, graphic patterns, or something more abstract is entirely up to you.

As long as the idents resolve with the end-frame of the Rinse TV logo, then that will answer the brief.

Technical Specifications:

— Supply your final files as a PNG-24 image sequence. Frame rate: 25fps

— Motion sequence only. No audio.

— Do not encode any video.

Work Process

My main Animation is going to be a conversation between Sewer Side (the protagonists) and The Blind Alley Cats, mainly their leader Stark. This conversation comes, as Sewer Side was setup to be eating by the cats. However Stark makes them a proposition to break into homes and steal food (more preferably cat food) for them. This is because they live on the streets and the alley cats hate domestic cats.

I started off the process by modeling the logo for the FMP in Maya. This was done first by creating the logo in Illustrator and Photoshop. I then took the image into Maya to use as a reference for modeling. The modeling was documented as screenshots and videos from recorded screens. On a weekly basis I used Microsoft Word to document a log on the work I’ve done throughout the week.

Following my schedule I started the research and concept art alongside the logo creation

Concept Stage

For my concept art I wanted to get a good understanding of how to draw the anatomy of cat and mice. So I sketched images of them from different perspectives and close ups. From there I now decided how I wanted the animals in general to look. I’m not used to drawing animals so it was hard for me to create relatable characters out of them. I needed them to stand out so I came up with the human concept sketches to give me something to reference from. From there I created the characters. I drew them at different views in my sketchbook before scanning it in and digitally drawing over them.

Alongside the character creation I was writing up the script for the two storylines. Once I finished the concept art I drew up the storyboards and scanned them onto the computer.

In conclusion

I am still pleased with the amount of work I was able to produce as at one point I thought I was only going to end up with just concept art. It was a grilling process as it’s the first one without a brief to follow, so it really depended on level of research and careful planning. I would have liked to have taken the videos into after effects for final editing but time wasn’t on my side. If I had one more week, things would have worked out. I would also liked to have finished the character logbook detailing information about the characters but I set too much work for myself. This project gave me a glimpse of what to expect in University, especially in the final year where I get to manage my own project. This was useful experience and I have a better understanding of where my weaknesses lie.

Final Quote

Life’s hard. Maya crashes sometimes. PSD networks have a right to mess up. Textures may not feel like loading for you. We can’t always stick to our schedule (due to external affairs). What matters is how we adapt to the situation to still produce acceptable, quality work.
