THERE IS SOMETHING ALMOST — STARTLING about the action in that gregg does not see it coming at all. the day’s been long, the atlanta heat sucking up to him as his shirt is progressing to cling to the damp skin of his back, and holden has shooed him around far more than for agents of the same rank to be appropriate. but what does gregg care, every time they as much as sit across from each other, he has the feeling that NEED FOR REDEMPTION is stamped across his forehead in bold letters ( presumably put there by ford himself; gregg can’t shake the anxious spiral he tends to drift towards when the man as much as looks at him the wrong way ); so, for lack of better things to do, gregg has gone down to atlanta with holden. maybe, to fix things between them. whatever it is that needed fixing, whatever could be fixed between them, whatever — doesn’t matter. REALLY doesn’t.

he shouldn’t dwell on it anyway.

awkward, LOADED silence follows them around, the closing elevator doors trapping them in the closest quarters they have ever been since gregg’s betrayal ( he’s decided to just CALL IT WHAT IT IS because a horse will always be a horse anyway; he has almost done enough praying & soul searching to come to terms with it all ). wrecking his brain for something to say seems useless, but he is trying nevertheless, anything to make the suffocating drought between them go away. before sufficient words can form on the tip of his tongue though, holden, who’s been standing next to him, leaning against the wall of the elevator in the same demonstration of exhaustion as gregg, suddenly shifts. a heartbeat later, and his body is much closer, leaning against gregg’s side, head practically on his shoulder in what must surely be an uncomfortable position given their height difference but still — he s t a y s. doesn’t even dare to breathe while his heart does its best impression of an olympic athlete or a culprit on the run.

they don’t say anything, they just stand like this.

maybe, there’s no need for words to fill the quiet between them after all.
