Raising her eyebrows at him as she watched him order another shot only to down it in two seconds. She hummed for a moment, knowing that Aaron was trying to avoid the question. With a small sigh she followed suit downing her own shot, shivering a bit. The alcohol beginning to hit her veins giving her a slight buzz. “Damn, I’m sorry,” her voice dropping before running her hand through her hair. “But I understand what you’re saying, hell I had one epic romance that I ruined but I still refuse to get myself out there because of getting hurt,” she paused looking at him pointedly. Thankful he was being so open and honest with her. “But, I see what everybody else is saying to you. It’s a super cheesy line but, you can’t count out everyone because of one bad apple. You said it yourself you’re a hopeless romantic and one hell of a good guy.” As he turned the attention towards her again she frowned shaking her head again. “Thanks Aaron, I just I think I need focus on me and Talk to Thorpe right now, before getting into anything. Well, anything other then whatever the hell we’re doing.”

“I get that. It’s important to be okay on your own before you think about that kind of thing. And I am okay on my own now and I know there’s always a chance of getting hurt when you get seriously involved with someone. It doesn’t make it any less scary. I’m just...I don’t know...getting comfortable with the idea again? But as for this thing with us I know it just sort of happened but I’m really glad it was you and you understand where I’m coming from. I just thought you deserved to know where I was coming from and that I like what we have so thanks for being so cool about all of this. It means a lot to me,” Aaron responded, taking a sip of his beer and wondering now just how she’d ruined her last relationship. Had she cheated on her ex? Something worse? Not that it mattered. She wasn’t the same person now as she had been. Neither was he. Still it was nice talking to someone about this stuff and not have to hold it in. Sophia was a good friend and they had fun together. He needed more fun in his life and to be able to trust someone again. Maybe she wasn’t necessarily his next attempt at anything romantic but it was a good step in the right direction and whatever happened he knew he was glad to have her in his life.

“Hey now—” Sophia pointed her finger at him, “Don’t forget I’m the one who invited you out,” her voice teasing as she twisted her finger at him, “so if anything it was my idea.” Somehow or another the two had managed to come back from their awkward moments and came around to even joking about their weird relationship. “Bottoms up,” with a small giggle she took the shot clinking it with his downing it, closing her eyes tightly as the burn slipped down her throat. Shaking her head slightly at the feeling, she reached for the beer he had ordered. At his words she shoot him a look before rolling her eyes, “Me? Oh yeah, a college drop out living with her parents, truly the biggest catch,” making fun of herself had become a defensive mechanism for her. “Honestly? I’ve only really had one serious relationship my entire life and that turned to shit, so, it hasn’t really been my top priority,” her voice dropping as she shrugged. “I could ask you the same thing Mr. charismatic Vet, how do you not have poodle and crazy cat girls all over you?” she turned the attention back on him eyeing him and taking another sip of her beer.

“You can take credit if you want to,” Aaron responded, taking another sip of his beer before his smile dropped a bit at her question. They’d never really broached this subject before and now that they had because of him he owed it to her to at least talk about it. Aaron ordered them both another shot and downed his quickly, chasing it with beer before answering, “The truth? I have plenty of girls hit on me. But when you have someone cheat on you it’s kind of hard to bring yourself to trust the next person. And yeah it’s been awhile and people keep telling me I have to move on at some point but every time it starts getting more serious than just sex I panic thinking that it’s just going to happen again and I still remember how badly it hurt and I don’t think I can handle it if it happened again. And I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings so I turn down almost all of them for their sake. It’s not like I don’t want to find someone. I’m a hopeless romantic but honestly you’re the only one I do this with regularly. But don’t sell yourself short, Sophia. Maybe things didn’t turn out the way you wanted but you have a good heart and I think when it comes to romance that’s more important than anything else. The rest works itself out one way or the other.” He knew he’d shared a lot but he felt better with her knowing the truth about him and his situation and he realized just then that he trusted her enough to be vulnerable with her.

Sophia felt Aaron’s presence before she heard or saw him, twisting in her chair she met his smile with a smile of her own. At his words she couldn’t help the blush that spread across her cheeks. He would call her beautiful or gorgeous often, she had gotten use to it but sometime it took her by surprise causing her to deep in shades. “It’s all good, I was early,” she shrugged easily her smile not faltering. Taking the last few sips of her beer she pushed it forward drumming her fingers on the counter. When he said tequila she couldn’t help but let out a small laugh, “You know me too well,” she mused shaking her head looking at him, “If I didn’t know any better I would think you’re trying to get me drunk.” She leaned forward on the counter using her hand to get the bartender’s attention. “And we both know what happens then,” she muttered half way under her breath teasing tone still apparent. When the bartender made it over to them she quickly ordered them two shots before grabbing the salt off the table.

“Well that was the idea. The least I can do is buy you drinks before getting you in bed,” Aaron retorted, grinning as he took his shot glass in hand not oblivious to the color in her cheeks. Sure when they’d first started doing this he’d felt a little awkward around her after but they’d made it a regular routine and he was comfortable with Sophia. Enough to joke around with her about where every night together led. “Cheers,” he said, holding his glass up and mentally preparing himself for the burn that was about to come. Once they’d downed the shots he ordered them both another beer and then turned his attention back to her. “Can I ask you something? I mean since we’ve been doing this awhile. How is it that you’re still single, Sophia? I’ve been thinking about it and I just don’t know how some lucky guy hasn’t claimed you for himself yet,” he said, taking a sip of his beer.

Tapping her fingers on the side of the wooden bar, Sophia shifted in her seat at the bar. Her eyes flickered to her watch for a moment before she twisted nervously. She had texted Aaron a couple hours ago about meeting up at the bar. Her nervous ticks had nothing to do with other boy being late, there was still another 10 minutes till the time they had decided on. It had more to do with the fact that she really didn’t know how tonight was going to go. Their relationship was complicated to say the least. They were friends, of course, but after a night of too much fun filled with way too many shots the two had stumbled into bed together. And just like that it became the new norm for them, hang out and hook up. They weren’t in a relationship, she knew that but what were they? Friends? It just seemed too cliche to say “friends with benefits”. Pushing her worries to the side she decided to survey the bar around her. The room around her was pretty busy considering the time of night, not enough to make her uncomfortable… yet. Thankfully no lonely men had taken the open seat her left as some kind of invitation. As the bartender approached her, she leaned forward on her elbows, “Just a beer for me please.”

The text from Sophia wasn’t entirely unexpected but it was still a nice surprise. They’d gone from being just friends until one night out where too much alcohol was involved and he woke up with the brunette naked beside him in his bed. Not that he minded. Sophia was a lot of fun and gorgeous and she always put a smile on his face and it was for that reason that they hadn’t really stopped hooking up. Not that he wasn’t necessarily interested in more with her but they’d never really broached the subject so he’d left it alone. They were having fun for now. So he’d agreed to meet her out a few hours later and then proceeded to get ready. He always tried to put in a little extra effort to look good for her when they went out and it was nice having the companionship. It kept other girls from giving him unwanted attention and he knew they’d be going home together at the end of the night. He was about to head to the bar when he’d gotten the call from work about a dog who needed his attention so he rushed there to take care of it before making his way to the bar they’d agreed to meet at. After he parked and made his way inside, Aaron spotted her sitting alone drinking a beer and slid into the seat next to her, flashing her a smile before saying, “Sorry I’m a little late, gorgeous. Work emergency. You look good though. Tequila?”

she nodded, easily accepting the answer. it was probably better that she didn’t think too much about it. the more she thought, the more she would doubt. and she could enjoy one night without that. his compliment surprised her, but she smiled, and it was genuine. that didn’t happen often, so it was kind of a surprise when she did. ❝ careful. i’m not sure my ego can handle this much kindness in one night, ❞ she joked, picking up her drink. ❝ but seriously. i don’t even know what to order, so you’re gonna have to recommend something. ❞

“I’m sure it’ll find a way to cope but I love any of the pizza’s here or the chicken parm is really good too,” Aaron responded with a smile, glancing over the menu even though he already knew what he was going to get. They also had his favorite cheesecake in town here but that would be for after dinner. “So how’s everything going anyway? You’ve been doing alright?” he asked, looking up at the brunette.

“Well don’t think about it too much. It’s just dinner and I told you I’m glad you’re here. I like doing this kind of stuff,” Aaron reassured her before smiling over at her and then taking a sip of water from the glass on the table. “And if it helps you look really nice with a smile on your face so I’m just glad I could put it there.”

“So now the real question is why we didn’t choose one of those ridiculously inexpensive buffet places? Though Emma would be far from happy with me if she found out, so perhaps it’s best. I don’t mind though, I did just get a paycheck the other day, it’d be a sin for me not to.”

“It’s on me anyway but honestly I wanted an excuse to get dressed up too. I always feel better in nice clothes and we have an amazing meal to look forward to and I’ve never had a bad night doing things like this.”

At least this one but after I got to NYU I decided I wanted to actually do it and I became a veterinarian and then I moved back here a couple of months ago and started working at the animal hospital and I’m doing great there. Plus it helped that this guy I used to know told me not to mess around too much and study. I had scholarships so I’m actually in the green at this point. So thanks, Charles. You’re part of the reason I’m where I am right now.”

“me too! except not really friends, more like acquaintances… it’s also kinda a resolution of mine.” she nodded lightly. clearly, she wasn’t good at conversations. “aaron, i’ll try to remember that. i’m perrie.” a slight chuckle came out of her mouth, making her feel like the oddness of their situation was, even more, embarassing than she felt it was. “i do look amazing” she agreed sarcastically, “and i like food. how incredible that you already get me.”

“I try to satisfy people where I can. It’s nice to meet you though, Perrie. I promise I will remember your name and that this whole thing won’t be as painful as you thought it might be,” Aaron responded, grinning at the girl before the waiter came back and he asked her, “Do you want a drink or something?”

marceline nods maybe a bit stiffly , she’s never been very good at going out with people even if it is just a friendly gesture. she flashes him a smile regardless and glances about the restaurant “ we could at least go half in , together. i wouldn’t want to put you out. “ she tries to offer , but not seem too pushy as she returns her eyes to the menu. “ what do you usually get ? “ she inquires , reading over a few options.

“No. Come on. I invited you and anyway you need to get out more, Marceline. I wasn’t sure you’d say yes to tonight. But everything’s really good and we’re going to have a good night. Don’t worry. I usually get the veal marsala though,” Aaron responded, giving her a reassuring smile.

He figured she must have a boyfriend with the way she looked. “I mean not anymore, I guess, but before I came to play your prince charming this morning,” he added, his smile growing a little more.

Aaron looked over at her confused for a moment before smiling and answering, “Because I wanted to see you and have a good night together and we haven’t hung out in awhile. Believe it or not I actually like you as a person.”
