Lily looked up from her planning binder, her eyes falling onto the nearest person in the room. “White lilies or chrysanthemums? Lilies symbolize that the soul of the departed has received restored innocence after death whereas chrysanthemums symbolize loyalty, devoted love, lamentation, and grief.”

Ryder didn’t dare sleep  — he knew Annie’s crimson face and scarlet words were waiting for him in his dreams, so he lived mostly in a mindless state. Never at rest, but never quite awake either.  He tried to be present for her, but as he stood there, feeling absolutely catatonic, Ryder knew he wasn’t doing a good job. He tried a cough  — sometimes it felt like he had forgotten how to speak, but he had something to do here, for James. “No, they smell like funeral homes. As far as lilies go, I’d say you’re the only one, Lil.” Ryder thought he forced out an alien smile, but it turned out as more of a grimace than anything. “Let’s do something punk. What about that one?” Ryder pointed to a bird of paradise illustrated on a random catalogue. “It means magnificence. But I guess chrysanthemums could work too. I can get behind loyalty and love.”

Violence beat through Icarus’ heart as hot as the blood that ran through his veins. It was as rhythmic as his heart rate and just as soothing to his ears. The screams, the cries, it was as if he absorbed them as an energy. He lived to prove that even chaos could be strategic. And beautiful. This may not have been a battle that he instigated, but he was determined to win it. “Yes, yes,” his voice rose in volumes to speak up over the screams, leaning over Ryder. “Do as he says and run back home to Mummy.” He turned his attention from the kid to Ryder, smile spreading over his lips. His smile was empty; his eyes were joyful. “This looks like it hurts.” He purposely pressed his hand over the cut, his wand tracing over it.

Ryder hissed, pain searing through his whole body when Carrow touched his wound. It was probably because of the magic  — he knew the cut wasn’t deep. Ryder was in a tough spot, his enemy behind him at a wand’s distance ( wand that, by the way, was alreadyaimed at him), so he talked. “It does, actually. But I’ve been through worse and, judging by that face of yours, I’d say so have you.” He used that pause to turn around. First rule of Order training: watch your back. He would never forget the nagging sound of Alastor Moody’s constant vigillance parade.

everything had happened so quickly—–one minute annette had been looking for her sister and the next it seemed as though the ballroom had exploded into angry chaos, spells and screams being flung back and forth. it was hard enough to keep from being trampled, let alone hit with a deadly curse, but somehow she’d managed it, though it didn’t look like it; covered in blood not her own (at least, she thought it wasn’t, though her mind distantly noted a sharp ache in her shoulder), but that had all paled in comparison to the moment she’d seen james fall. james. she had seen it all and she had tried, she had tried to get to him, to help, to—-but she’d been shoved against a wall, pinned in place by the crowd and could only scream in protest as she watched one of the most important parts of her world die. and after that, what else was there? so she’d slid to the floor, and there she’d stayed, staring blankly ahead—-because he couldn’t be dead, he couldn’t—-until a familiar voice broke through the haze and pain and disbelief. “ry?” her voice cracked, rough from all of the screaming, “ry—-ryder—–” it was like seeing him, seeing someone she knew broke something inside of her, tears spilling down her cheeks as she fought to breathe, “ryder—-i—–he—-they—–james—-”

Ryder didn’t like blood, but as he saw Annette approach him, face covered in scarlet  — but ALIVE, that was the most important, he ran to her like she was the last golden snitch in the world, wounds be damned. He kissed her forehead, and held her close to his chest, a clandestine smile forming on his crimson stained lips as he silently healed some of her wounds. She was alive. And that meant maybe his whole family could make it. Al, Rhys, James, Jane... Ryder was so relieved to see her that it took him minutes to realise she was trying to talk to him. He looked in her eyes as he tried to understand  — “James?” Okay, that he got. “WHERE IS JAMES? What did he do?”

there was blood everywhere. for once, no smartass retort left her mouth - - - instead, carina backed herself into a corner and slid down, the ache within her building more and more every second. she wanted to cry but instead, she just sighed. the shadow of a figure nearing left carina flinching and she shook her head, too intent on staring at a spec of dust. “leave me ALONE. just go - - - find someone else. i don’t need your help.”

Ryder snorted, steps a little uneven as he approached her —  another one to add to his list of repercussions. Of war, of course. Always war. “You’re one of those in the guest list, right?” He asked. It wasn’t too long ago that he too was a member of the pureblood society. That was abandoned a lifetime ago. “It’s time to decide what you’re fighting for.”

Ryder didn’t like blood. The violence beating inside his heart was ever present, but he was never foolish enough to believe his fury was beautiful. Blood belongs within us, with our organs and our sins and our rage. It serves its purpose, spreading that undeniably naive belief that we have virtues from our heart to the rest of our body, because every single one of us wants to believe we’re good people. Ryder didn’t like blood, but he was brutal enough to make spilling it into an art. It mixed with his tears and covered the ground in crimsom, because it was war and the killing curse wasn’t made for wars. He was tired of feeling like he was death himself. “Get up,” he said to a kid in dress robes hidden behind the bar. “Run through that door and don’t look back. Get out of here.” There was a long cut on his back and the magic from the curse prevented him from magically healing it.

The night was delightfully October. Ryder thought it was too cold to be warm and too warm to be cold, just the way he liked it. It was the first tuesday of the month and, as tradition predicted, there he was, standing outside the door with more bags than he could carry. For lack of an empty hand, Ryder contemplated touching the bell button with his tongue, but decided to knock on the door with his elbow. It really was kind of a pathetic sight. “Come on, guys. Make this quick. I might drown in our food before we eat it.” It was better safe than sorry: he knew how demanding his audience could be where food was involved. “Also, I think I need to drain the dragon.” @benignvs @albcspvtter

“It is a big deal.” Ryder replied, materializing out of nowhere like an apparition  —  really, he just liked to surprise her. “Does Rhys know about them? Has he done anything? This is unacceptable.”

“It’s been a long day.” Most of the time Eryx could bury his personal feelings and do his job but there were moments, moments he had trouble justifying the orders he’d been sent to carry out. Today was a particularly difficult one, the person he’d been sent to obliviate was merely a child. The girl was only seven but someone had decided she was a threat to the Death Eaters themselves, it baffled him. For an organization so all powerful how could a mere child bring it tumbling down? 

And yet still, he did his job, he took precious memories from her to keep grown men safe. Eryx would never be able to vocalize what had him behaving so badly tonight, he settled for the reputation that he was a grump, it was easier even if it was so much lonelier. At the very least he had sent the girl to a safehouse afterward, contacted a member of the Order, left a vague note about who she was. Someday he’d restore her memories, and that of hundreds of others. someday. “I’d prefer you sit at least two seats away.”

Ryder glanced at his watch. “Twenty-four hours like all the others, mate.” He answered, gulping down a sip of his ale. It was his first day back in Britain after the three weeks spent in the continent for the European league. He wondered if he’d ever feel tired or sorry about serving everyone their own asses in the field —  probably not. Still, life was very tiring when you travelled across the pond and spent the rest of the day training. Ryder rolled his eyes. He was one seat away, but apparently it was too much for the dark knight over there. “Sorry, mate. Didn’t mean to interrupt your brooding or anything with my presence. Do I reek of human contact or is it just sweat?”

With a dramatic pause in his speech, because he IS a ( drama queen ), Ryder managed to give Declan a mirthless glance before he broke out in laughter. “Can you fix my floo, though?”

Ryder snorted as he sat down next to her. “C u t e. Is it your plan to make an occupation out of your drinking? Because with the perfect attendance you just might be employer of the month.”

Jane could feel herself look at him, and it felt as if her eyes were glued to his figure. It was if she was making sure that he was REAL, making sure that she wasn’t just finally going mental and imagining that Ryder Bellamy was there. A warmth tingled down to her fingers as she felt herself giving him a small smile, “Hi,” I’ve missed you. Are you staying? Slowly, Jane reached out to touch him, quickly bringing her hand back, a blush rising in her cheeks. “Sorry, that was odd, I’m just not sure if you’re real or if I’m just FINALLY having that mental breakdown everyone says should be coming soon,” Jane sputtered, trying to catch her breath.  There were what felt like a million emotions drowning her, but mostly she felt joy, hope, and love.

As Jane pulled her hand away, Ryder quickly took hold of it. The feel of her skin wasn’t something he felt like denying himself. He didn’t know what to say, though. He didn’t know what to do. He was acting more out of reflex than calculation. Ryder didn’t think he could feel such deep sadness, but when she asked him if he was real, it nearly killed him. When he heard her say people expected her to have a mental breakdown, it broke his heart just a little more. I’m sorry I put you through this. Deep breath. I never wanted to hurt you. But he did. He did. It felt like forever that he just stood there holding her hand. It was bordering on pathetic, really, so he sighed. “I missed you.”

Jane’s head was turned a w a y from him, her hair a sheet covering her face when he finally addressed her. Yes, she had been staring but for good reason, of course. Finally, she turned her head towards him, FIDGETING with the bangles on her wrist. “Some people don’t recognize me out of my work uniform, I suppose.” But Ryder Bellamy wasn’t just some people.

Ryder froze, eye widening when he heard her voice. Her. J a n e. His Jane. He had been so caught up on what he would do once he found her that he didn’t realise she’d found him first. “Sorry, I— “ All of his eloquence was lost the minute he saw her. “I mean — ” Ryder ran a hand through his hair, jumping up from his seat to greet her. He chose to swallow all the words jumping to the front of his mind. Sorry. I love you. Do you still love me? Will you have me back? I missed you. None of them seemed appropriate. He didn’t even know what was appropriate for them anymore. “Hi.”

“Do you plan on inviting me in or will you just stand there?” Ryder smiled, pulling her into a hug. She probably wasn’t expecting to see him that day. She probably wasn’t expecting to see him show up at her door the muggle way that day. Hell, she probably wasn’t expecting to see him at all. And, well, Ryder was theatrical, so the absolute surprise on her eyes was warmly welcomed. “I missed you, Annie. And did you notice the absence of black eyes? It’s all Rhys’ doing. I can’t believe your fiancé was nice.” @xoxoannieb

Rhys was the first to drop his gaze, deciding to drop his pride just this once. A miracle in itself. But for the younger boy’s sake he took the offered beer almost as a sign of peace. “I watched a few of your games here and there, did pretty good this season.” He cleared his throat to break the awkwardness. “I take it you haven’t seen Jane yet?”

“Thank you. France treated me well, but I’m back for good. I’m playing for Puddlemere now.” Ryder tried to smile, but it probably looked more like a grimace. They weren’t the best of friends to begin with, and talking to Rhys about his relationship to the guy’s sister was awkward at the very least. It was like walking on eggshells, but multiplied. “No, I haven’t. She’s working, I can’t just show up unless i have a broken rib or two.” Ryder chuckled out of habit, but it came out as a bitter laugh. “I fully intend to get her back, you know?

Heels together, body erect, head raised, shoulders drawn back, and a smirk fighting the thin facade of a straight face. Pippa made a dramatic flourish, mimicking a fencing salute. “En garde. Pret. Allez!” She made a show of taking a quick leap forward and following the balestra with a lunge, stabbing the air next to her companion. It was a flurry of swift motion. “Are you sure you’re ready for this?” She steps forward and angles her feet, tucking one behind the other into first position. Pippa raised the foil up to her face, before swooshing it down to the side. “That’s a SALUTE,” she demonstrated before stepping into the ‘ready’ position, “and that’s EN GARDE.” Pippa glanced over her shoulder with a mischievous gleam. “ –- Now, do you know how to THRUST?”

Ryder walked in with a round of applause. Her face was unforgettable. There was no way he could be mistaken. He knew Pippa was talented, but her fencing skills were sublime. It had been a while since he last saw her, since he last saw everyone  — and, suddenly, it seemed he was crowded with chance encounters. He smiled at the suggestive question she threw at her opponent. And that smile. That smile of hers was dangerous. Ryder looked at the guy and knew he had absolutely no chance, so he stepped in. “Well, you know I do.”
