Bitches!!! Several co-workers and I all just left a very unhealthy job (at least 5 of us all left lol). I sent your article ‘The Resignation Checklist’ around to everyone before we did. This is a message my co-worker sent me- she went over the checklist and realized she had PTO that wouldn’t have paid out and used it before she left!!! I used the checklist myself and before I left: quit at the beginning of the month to get an extra month of insurance, am going for a physical and dental cleaning, went and got an eye exam and new glasses through my vision insurance, made sure my 401k was vested, and redeemed some company rewards points for a gift card! I especially would never have thought about new glasses without your list and am so excited for them. If something has a big fandom, publishers and studios know they can make money off it. This is why we see publishers openly acquiring and selling things that were originally posted as fanfic, like Alchemised, Heated Rivalry, etc. It’s why the horrid wizard woman considers people participating in her fandom to be supporting her political causes.

Word of mouth is the most effective way to sell people on media, and fandom is word of mouth that costs the creators/owners nothing. Doing Fandom Stuff used to be subversive, but media companies have now figured out that fandom is a form of advertising and they’re no longer worried about it. Those of us who still think of fandom like it’s a livejournal-era secret club we can never let the corporations discover have got to update our self-concept

Devastated I couldn't make something more elaborate for MBC because I had surgery scheduled this week (which went well btw!) But that does mean this lil rough drawing has the honour of being my very first piece of art post-op! And I'm personally very happy with it!

I just had to draw my favourite hero from MHA (a choice which was absolutely influenced by the fact that he is voiced by Zeno Robinson, a Black man, in the English dub, and that version of his voice is my favourite). I love Hawks a lot and I'm surprised I don't see more Black interpretations of him already tbh!

Some design notes for fun:

I went back and forth on his skin tone a lot, I was debating between going w a more red-leaning undertone (to match w his wings) or a more orange/yellow undertone (to match with. well. everything else). I eventually settled on the latter.

I decided on freeform/semi-freeform locs for the hair because they felt like they could have the closest match to what hair he has canonically (I really like that his canon hair style kinda mimics the way bird feathers look on the heads of some species, like cockatiels, and I wanted to keep that subtle bird theming)

If you squint you'll notice the scruff he has on his chin has a curly texture :)) This was a choice that was influenced by the reference I was using for his hair and I thought it made sense and would be a nice added detail

(I would actually like to take this moment to shout out Afro Index for providing me with the main reference I used for this, their website is a fantastic resource for Black hair)

Overall this was very fun to do and I'm kind of obsessed with this design concept now, I definitely think I'm gonna revisit it in the future. :)) Thank you for creating such a fun challenge! And I hope you have/had a wonderful birthday!!

I think this is more than enough!! Zeno voicing Hawks 100% made him Black to us lmao. He even dressed up as him on a red carpet, like 🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️

My first submission for @creatingblackcharacters’s Melanin Beam Challenge!!! Catra, Bow, Adora, and Glimmer from SPoP :)

To be honest I’ve always hc Glimmer as Blasian and Catra as at least half Black as well, simply bc I do that with almost every character I like or relate to (and bc I can) 😋 (Also I feel like Glimmer could only shape her hair like that if it was Afro texture) And I love Adora too, but she very much gives white girl in the show so I usually draw her as white lol. But I luv Black Adora so much :3 And Bow is canonically Black in the show, however he (1) is lowkey colored bright orange (2) is drawn with a pointed nose and implied small lips like most of the other white/non Black characters, and (3) has a high top with NO fade 💔 I guess some of that can be attributed to simplifying things for animation, but still it bothers me. So whenever I draw him I change all of those things. :3

being a woman is easier when youre white.

oppression is eased when you are white, as you get extra privileges, and your whiteness is seen as a positive characteristic that in some ways counter-balances your other forms of being a minority. whiteness controls everything.

you are automatically way more innocent in your own oppression as a gay, trans, disabled person because of your whiteness.
