I rushed out of the apartment as fast as I could before everything would blow up like I knew it would. That was the plan, after all.
Elizabeth came back for me. She came back for me and I was not just going to let her slip away from me again. She might have been Michael’s at some point, but the look in her eyes told me that she was now mine. I would make her mine.
I slammed my car door shut, a smile on my face as I drove back home.
I no longer cared about what happened between them; every fight they had was pushing her closer to me, and I knew that suggesting a threesome would pull her towards me. Michael was not going to be okay with this an hour from now. He was too vanilla, and based on the books that adorned Betty’s bookshelf, she was nothing but fire and I would happily burn with her. Any kinks that Michael was not able to satisfy, I would bend and break myself for. I would let her do anything to me, and fuck, I would do the same to her.
Michael did not know how to be a proper dominant figure in her life. It was obvious with the way he hardly checked in on her while smacking her around. Betty had a slight look of fear in her eyes, and the way she whispered her words, she was scared of saying the wrong thing, or scared of saying anything at all. I wanted to hurt Michael for not checking in with her more often. She needed that. Her eyes were screaming for it, but he was too focused on marking his territory to care.
I turned off the ignition and sat in my car for a while longer, waiting for my heart to stop racing. I closed my eyes and rested my head back in my seat, waiting for the inevitable phone call. It’s been an hour now, either one of them would be calling soon, ready to throw more bashful comments and damn me to hell, and make empty threats about ending our friendships; but it would all be empty words without any action. It’s how it always goes.
I entered the house, Jesse and Jolly playing some game on the Xbox in the living room. “Where have you been?” Jolly glanced at me.
“I was with Betty and Mike, tried to smooth things over.”
“Just fucking leave them alone, Noah. Betty is happy. Mike is happy. Let them be happy.”
“Which is why I went over there.”
“So you apologized, like for all of it?” Jesse raised an eyebrow. “I don’t buy it.”
“I apologized to both of them, we’re good.”
“Thank god, I was starting to worry,” Jolly chuckled. “Proud of you.”
“Thanks,” I nodded.
I headed up to my room and closed the door behind me. I turned on the shower, wanting to erase any part of Michael that might be lingering on me, completely grossed out with myself for how far I took it. I was there for her, and her only. Michael was just collateral damage. He would be fine. Sure, he may have been in love with her for a decade or so, but did he actually care enough about her? She left because of him; he said things to her that should have never been said. Telling her that he didn’t love her? Not even at my angriest would I have said those words to her. No, he didn’t love her, and the way he acted around Chrissy was the biggest tell of all.
If Betty were mine, if she was actually mine, I would rather gouge my eyes out than even think about looking at another woman.
I wrapped a towel around my waist and checked my phone. There you are, my pretty little thing.
I pressed play on the voicemail. “Noah,” her voice was soft as she spoke my name. “Noah, I… fuck. I love you. But today… this morning…” she sighed. “I’m not cut out for a threesome. I’m not. It was fun, but it was too much for me.” Oh, sweet girl. “I’m literally in my car in a Whole Foods parking lot because I needed to get out of that apartment. Michael… he…” she sniffed, and her voice broke. Elizabeth, if he hurt you, I will kill him. “He started screaming at me. After you left, I rushed to the shower and locked myself in there. I thought the heat would help, but my mom was right. I love you more than I love Mike and he fucking knows, Noah!” She sobbed. “When I came out to the bedroom he literally cornered me and started yelling at me, the same way he did months ago before I ran away. I’m not scared of him, I know how to fight back, but when he gets angry he… loses himself. I’m okay, I’m not hurt or anything,” she whispered. “I’m okay.” I knew she was lying. She was not okay and the strain in her voice gave her lies away. The voicemail ended and all I saw was red.
I knew they would fight, but I never thought Michael had it in him to get physical. If he hurt her, I would never forgive myself.
“He’s dead,” I muttered. I pulled on a pair of sweatpants and a tank top, grabbed a pair of Vans and slammed my bedroom door shut behind me. “Jesse! We’ve got a problem!” I yelled. “It’s Betty!”
“She called you too?” He was already by the front door, ready to leave.
“Mike is a dead man,” I growled.
“Mike is a dead man.” He nodded and grabbed his keys. “Jolly, let’s go!”
“Did you talk to her?” I asked. “All I got was a voicemail.”
“Yeah, she called me after she could not get a hold of you. She was crying and kept trying to tell me that she’s okay and that he didn’t mean it. I have no idea what we’re walking into, but if anything happened to her, if he did anything to hurt her…” Jesse’s voice trailed off.
“Breathe,” Jolly demanded. “We don’t know what’s going on yet. But let’s not die on our way over there.” He had a point. Jesse was driving like a bat out of hell.
Traffic was letting up now, and we got there in under an hour. Jolly said he would wait in the car for us as we rushed into the building, grateful that the temporary code from last night still worked.
“What if she’s not back yet?” Jesse asked.
“Then we wait. I am not leaving here without her.” Not again.
We reached their floor and walked to the apartment. The air was heavy with tension. Jesse knocked on the door. When no one answered, he banged on it. “Betty, Mike! Open the fucking door!”
“Jesse,” Betty opened the door, “calm down! We have enough noise complaints already!”
Jesse pulled her into his arms and her walls crumbled. “Do you still have my room available?” She sobbed.
“Betty, what did he do?” I softly placed my arm on her back. She pulled away from Jesse and collided with me, her hands grasping the back of my shirt so tightly that I heard a few threads snap. I rested my chin on her head and wrapped my arms around her, pulling her in closer.
Jesse walked to the bedroom and he swore under his breath. “Noah, you’re gonna wanna see this.”
“Does Jesse know,” she whispered, her face still buried in my chest.
“No. I won’t speak a word of it to anyone. I promise.”
“Thank you,” she whispered. Her body stopped shaking and I gently pried her off of me and held her face in my hands. Whatever bruise she tried to cover was visible under far too much concealer. My breath hitched in my throat and I pulled her back into me and held her head to my chest, softly stroking her hair as she sobbed. “He didn’t mean to, I swear. Please, don’t hurt him!”
“Jesse, grab me a warm towel,” I kept my voice steady as he re-entered the kitchen. He nodded as he grabbed the towel that hung from the stove and dampened it.
“Come here,” he whispered to her and motioned her towards the couch. “We’ve got you.”
She grabbed onto my hands, her short nails digging ever so slightly into my palms as he wiped her face, the bruise becoming more and more visible. I tried to blink away the tears that fell from my eyes. I wanted to look away from it, I wanted to erase it. I wanted to turn back time and prevent this from happening. If I had just stayed she would be okay. I should have fucking stayed.
“You’re coming home with us. You, Lucy, and whatever else you need. You’re coming home,” Jesse cried. “Noah will help you pack. I will stay out here in case he comes back.”
I stood and helped her off of the couch, her body shaking uncontrollably. “Lucy is in the studio,” she whispered.
“I’ll grab her,” Jesse whispered. He grabbed the carrier next to the couch and softly walked off. the poor cat must be as scared as Betty.
“Suitcase?” I asked her as she sat on the bed.
“Closet. Noah, I can do this myself.”
“I know you can, but you don’t have to. Tell me what you need.”
She listed off items and quantities, and I shoved them into her suitcase as she spoke. I smiled as she asked for her teddy bear, and I walked over to her and handed the soft brown bear to her. She clutched it to her chest and pressed on the hand. “I love you Betty, always,” an unfamiliar voice spoke. “I love you too, dad.” Her words nothing more than a broken whisper. I stifled a sob and looked over to her as silent tears ran down her face, her voice unable to make any more sounds.
“Baby,” I walked slowly over to her and crouched in front of her, “is there anything else you need me to pack for you?”
“I’ll grab my bathroom stuff,” she whispered and tried to stand, but I shook my head at her.
“No. Again, I know you can, but you don’t have to be strong right now. Let me take care of this for you, please. It’s the only thing taking my mind off of murder.”
“Okay,” she smiled weakly. “My drawer and cabinet are the ones on the left. Everything in there has to come with,” she sighed. “My shampoo, conditioner, and body wash are in the shower. I’ll need those, too. And my hair dryer is somewhere.”
I grabbed another bag from her closet and loaded it with everything she asked for. I heard her walk around the bedroom and quickly glanced at her as she filled up a backpack with the bear, her art supplies, and jewelry box.
“Is that everything?” I asked.
“Yeah, just going to grab Lucy’s toys and we should be set. We’ll have to get her a new litter box.”
“Her toys are already taken care of. She’s used my cat’s box before, she will be okay. I will grab her a new one later,” Jesse spoke. “All good in here?”
“Yeah, I think we have everything.”
“Good. Come on, let’s get you home.”
I held her waist softly as we exited the bedroom, pulling her suitcase behind me as her bags hung from my arm. “Wait here,” Jesse whispered as we entered the kitchen. “Betty, which elevator does Mike usually use?”
“The main one, but there’s another at the end of the hall on the left. It goes to the main lobby and not the parking garage.”
“We will use that one. Betty, grab Lucy’s carrier. Noah and I got the bags. We are going to be right behind you.” Jesse opened the door and Betty grabbed Lucy’s carrier.
“Feels wrong kidnapping his cat, to be honest with you.” I stated.
“Who knows when Mike will be back? I’d rather her with us and fed than alone and starving,” Jesse said as he checked the hallway.
“Fair point,” I nodded.
“He’s not here yet. Betty, go,” Jessy demanded.
She slip through the door, and I followed her closely. Jesse closed the door behind us rushed us along. We rounded the corner as we heard the elevator ding, and I heard Michael’s voice call out for her as he walked to the door.
“Betty,” I whispered, “keep walking,” I urged her. “Quickly.” She nodded and hurried along in front of us, reaching the elevator at the end of the hall.
“Come on Lucy, be a good girl and stay quiet, please!” She begged as she pressed the button repeatedly. A relieved sigh escaped her lips as the doors opened. We rushed inside and the doors closed behind us.
“He’s going to lose his shit!” Betty whispered. “Fuck!”
“It will be okay. There’s two of us here. He won’t try anything.” Jesse promised. “Jolly is in the car waiting for us. I texted him and he’s already got the car running and ready to go.”
Betty nodded, her breathing sharp and shallow. “Betty, look at me,” I whispered, “you’re safe now. I promise you.”
“I will breathe once we get on the freeway,” she whispered. “Jesse, take Lucy,” she handed him the carrier as the elevator came to a stop. “I will run to the car.”
“Go,” Jesse and I said in unison as the doors opened.
She sprinted off and pushed through the main door, sliding into the car that was parked right out front with the door and trunk already open. Smart, Jolly. Thank you.
I threw her bags into the trunk of the car and slid in next to her as Jesse handed her Lucy. As soon as the doors were closed Jolly sped off.
