Character Changes: Villains (Personalities and Powers)
These are going to be quicker than the individual character profiles.
Our main Big Bad, along with Jestine. Most of the major problems in the story can be traced back to the two of them stirring up trouble. Kaycee is actually an immortal nature spirit that represents Chaos, not technically a deity. She and Jestine hate that Safe Haven is able to effectively keep them out, so they have a plan to change that. She really just likes to make trouble for fun, thatās her whole motivation (Jestine wants to get into Safe Haven because she hates its residents thinking theyāve bested her by keeping her out⦠even though they donāt think that). Sheās a little bit based on Discord from MLP, but she has no desire to make friends with anyone.
Kaycee can turn into just about any animal, but these animals usually look as crazy and chaotic as her true form. Her human disguise when she meets Cameron was the result of incredible effort, and she couldnāt hold it together for long (itās difficult for her to force herself to act against her nature, even temporarily). I also like to imagine that sparks start flying off her hair when sheās upset. In addition, when someone experiences internal chaos within themselves, she has the ability to control them. Her victim isnāt aware of when it happens, her chaos just feels like normal to them. This even applies to people within Safe Haven, even though Kaycee canāt physically enter. In addition, being the spirit of chaos, she can sometimes just make random shit happen around her (again, like Discord).
Between her and Kaycee, sheās the brains. Arrogant and superior, Jestine represents the sin of Pride. She possesses a magic bowl that allows her to see nearly anywhere she wants and can help her find out all kinds of information, and she is quite literally addicted to watching it. The more knowledge she acquires, the more her surety that sheās a greater force than any other being increases. Sheās also a creator of magical items and an inventor of fantastical machines. Her home is a fortress built on a patch of land in Hell that she enchanted herself to float high in the air, where most demons canāt reach it. In addition, itās protected by spells and devices, many of her own creation. Not that she needs the protection (or cares if anyone hurts her daughter, who lives with her), she just doesnāt want people disturbing her stuff.
Beyond her ability to acquire knowledge, use magic, and create things, Jestine can also control the pride of others, boosting their self-confidence or destroying their ego as she pleases.
Her real name is apparently āVictoriaā and man would it be funny if any of her enemies knew that.
Sheās not a āqueenā in this version, the only thing thatās actually special about her is that she has the ability to replicate other creaturesā powers when she drinks their blood. It doesnāt always work (and depending on the creature, sometimes thereās no chance of it working at all) and her new powers eventually fade if she doesnāt drink that personās blood regularly, but it can give her a big advantage sometimes. (This is why she immediately tried to bite Zill after she saw him using magic.)
Other powers that all vampires have include incredible speed and strength, hypnosis (that makes victims feel calm before being bitten), and the ability to turn into shadows (changed from bats).
In this version, Venganza and Simon were both part of a clan of vampires under an abusive leader since they were turned. This leader used Venganza specifically for her gift, until she and Simon managed to escape together. Sheās now just trying to survive, but she was trained to be a hunter (and kind of likes hunting for blood, even though her conscience tells her itās wrong). She acts very confident, though, especially in front of her prey.
She and Simon also have a situationship going on.
I kind of have to keep her in this story because of Addisonās history. She wonāt appear in the rewrite, so weāll only meet this version of her in the extension part, but more information will come up about her as the story continues.
Her existing character is alright, but Iād make a couple tweaks. Sheās collected but cruel, and weirdly, she has a tendency to insist that people smile when theyāre around her (even her experiments, even when theyāre in physical pain) because she doesnāt like to see people who look upset. Exhibits casually authoritarian behavior.
What drives her is that she fears death, and is trying to find a way to achieve biological immortality. She doesnāt like to confront negative emotions, even in herself. Has hardened her heart her whole life, is very repressed. Sheās also an avian, so she can turn into a snowy owl.
His villain status is mostly related to Damian. He resents that heās basically been assigned by Lucifer to be Damianās friend, so he tries to get Damian in trouble all the time, mostly by trying to reveal to his parents that Damian has been sneaking to the surface world to go to school (this stays a secret for a while in my rewrite). Heās pretty bitter and sadistic.
One thing to know about demons is that theyāre basically the unholy counterparts to Earth animals. They are like animals from Earth, but⦠not. For instance, Jill is a demonic counterpart to an anthro cat like Vanexa. This includes creatures like serpians and avians. Bozzwick is a demonic avian, specifically a bleeding heart pigeon. He can turn into a version of the bird (it still has some demon-like features, though) and another of his powers is that he can sustain incredible injuries, especially blood loss, and recover easily.
Based on how she was framed, I got the impression that Mirage was like, the biggest of the Big Bads, so I couldnāt not involve her. She wonāt come up for a while though.
In my rewrite, she was never human herself, but is a particularly murderous eidolon. She paid Cierra to get her into Safe Haven and found a vulnerable person there to possess, a human named Gale. Gale was an adult by this point, living alone, and doesnāt really have any close relationships, so nobody noticed when she changed.
Her only real motive is that she just likes to kill. Eidolons need to kill to survive ā because they have no solid form and are ethereal spirits like ghosts, they sustain themselves by absorbing the life force of other beings. This is hard to do in Hell, where people are tougher, but the more chill eidolons get by harvesting life force from non-sentient animals there. Mirage likes the hunt, but she thinks itās more fun on Earth, where her prey doesnāt know to look out for themselves (people are more paranoid in Hell).
She tries to be careful with covering up her kills, but sheās reckless at her core. Part of her doesnāt care if someone finds out about her, because then she can just kill them too! Oh, and sheās not a pedo in this version, because I donāt think it helps her character at all. She does enjoy killing kids, though, because she likes having power over others and kids are especially vulnerable. Itās not a sexual thing, itās a violence thing.
Probably the least effective āvillainā in this story, and specifically an antagonist to Jack and Zill. Grew up with his authoritarian father who taught him to repress his emotions, which causes him to lash out at others. He mostly feels alone, and the only person heās even sort of friends with is Autumn, who has gained his trust, even though Autumn disapproves of his behavior most of the time. Autumn is probably the only person with whom heās comfortable with expressing his true emotions.
I have no idea exactly where Iām going to put her yet, but I feel like I can use her.
Cierra is Zillās aunt and among the most powerful and influential demons in Hell. She has a gang whose main source of income is assisting demons in illegally leaving Hell for the mortal world. Cierra herself is so powerful that sheās one of the rare beings who can get through Safe Havenās barrier. In fact, she was the person who lost Zill there. She was babysitting him as a favor to her sister and decided to bring him along for business that she had there, and subsequently lost him in the animal district.
The most important thing for Cierra is her family, so this mistake was especially painful for her (her sister, Maricella, mostly disapproves of her choices because she herself just wants to live a quiet, normal life with her kids). She rules over her gang with an iron fist because sheād be dethroned if she showed weakness, but there would be room in her heart for love if she could give up her desire for power. Her biggest flaw is that she thinks she can have both. She canāt, in this situation.
If/when she meets Zill, sheād love him. Maricella doesnāt use her magic and Alexis didnāt inherit it from her mother, so sheād be delighted that heās been trying to get comfortable with using his powers and would certainly help him learn. The only thing sheād be iffy about is that he uses his magic to be a hero, because he would originally try to bring her to justice, and sheās very much not on board.
Her powers are that she can levitate herself and objects, teleport, cast spells (if she chooses to learn them), and summon blasts of green fire. Zill has these same powers.
Wonāt be important until the extension, and even then he wonāt come up for a while. In my mind, the best place to put him (and Baltimore) is in the second book of ZP, based on what I know (and honestly, it would have been so cool to see the book where Kayla was meant to be the main character) but my goal right now is just to finish the first one. So weāll see.
Heās the leader of a powerful gang in E! district that specializes in the sale of illegal items (weapons, drugs, etc). Their base of operations is a successful theater that they use to hide their stock and launder their money. Castelloās theater is run mostly like a legit business, which is why he hasnāt been caught out yet. Heās cold and ruthless with both the actors and gang members who work for him, but is good at putting up a front and charming people. Notably, he doesnāt like flirting nearly as much as he did in canon. Heās also a mangrove snake serpian.
Wonāt be important until the extension, goes to a private school in E! (called Blacksdale High, a reference to an older version of ZPA) and knows Kayla because they live near to each other in the same district. They grew up butting heads at local community events, especially ones related to theater. They also attended the same elementary and middle school, so Kaylaās friends are kind of familiar with her too.
Sheās narcissistic and manipulative. She doesnāt look down on non-avians, but thatās just because she looks down on everyone indiscriminately. She likes a lot of the same things as Kayla (singing, theater, fencing) so they often end up in circumstances where theyāre competing against each other. Baltimore is genuinely talented (if not as much as she thinks), so Kayla is pretty challenged in this situation. She can also turn into a baltimore oriole, her avian species.
Another character that may only become relevant way in the future. And honestly most of the reason Iām keeping her is because an anthro character wearing the pelts of her enemies is badass. She and her husband run the animal district and are trying to transform it from a wild place into a profitable farm. They support JayJay and her pack because they grow organized crops on a portion of the land.
Sheās temperamentally pleasant but cunning, and her weapon of choice is poison. Meanwhile, her husband is more openly vicious. In fact, heās the one who killed Spamās father.
Lucifer, Leeson, the other deadly sins
Technically they still exist, but theyāre not that important. Lucifer isnāt exactly a villain and just has a complicated relationship with Damian (and he is evil, but it just isnāt relevant to this story), Leeson wonāt be mentioned by name but might be described as someone who causes trouble for Damian, and the other deadly sin characters are kinda around but probably wonāt affect the story.
Characters connected to Hazbin (Adina, Roo, arguably Xanthos) are no longer part of the story, as that has evolved into something separate. Some characters that are attached to other villains (like Salem is to Castello) will probably come up, but as more minor characters, so I didnāt mention them here.
