hotd season 3 writing for every other plotline: two steps forward and one step back. some genuinely compelling writing and dialogue next to the most why would you ever plot it like this character beats of the whole show. pacing somehow rushing and dragging at the same time.

"all power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely" and "war is shit" are themes that aren't suddenly sexist if the lead character of the story is female -- as long as male characters in the story are similarly impacted by the same themes and not written as exceptions. Katniss' "war is shit" isn't bad for not making her a #girlboss because Gale, written to be very like her in so many ways, is a boy ruined by war. her villain, as a teenaged boy with similarities to her, was also ruined by it. Rhaenyra's "all power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely" storyline isn't bad because... she's doing the same evil shit her brothers did when THEY sat on the horrible throne of conquest.

it is demanding that writers put aside their genuine beliefs about power, violence, and war to write women as the exception--that these things are good and empowering when they alone do it--that is demanding a sexist double-standard, not writers writing what they sincerely believe about these things and showing their impact on characters regardless of gender

#legit#there's actually no feminist way to rule from a throne of Conquest#and impose your will using the threat of living nukes#you don't rule that throne that throne rules you. it has a gravity of its own that you must surrender to and be reshaped by#in the same way that Helaena talked about the dragons influencing and shaping them#power isn't something you possess. it is something that possesses you as well.#on a show where that throne basically ate Viserys alive bit by bit#and had a poisonous impact on Rhaenyra's brothers as well... it's valid to follow through on that

It IS important to tell Fantasy stories where women struggle and claim symbols that represent their sincere power... power can be a good, healthy thing. It can come in honorable forms that do not crush the life out of others. But it would have been incredibly grotesque if this show had ever made a throne of conquest and dragons--the threat of burning people alive if they disobey--represent healthy empowerment.

They aren't that kind of power, they're symbols of domination.

The fact that Rhaenyra (and Alicent) have been denied healthy ways to come into their own power and have dignified status and rights in this society is a real wound and it drives Rhaenyra's hunger. It drives the tragedy of the story. But she is trying to satisfy that hunger with domination rather than justice and it will never sate her appetite. It's not a good thing for a person who has been oppressed along one axis (or even multiple axes) to fall to the lure of domination as a way to soothe that pain. The problem isn't that Rhaenyra wants to come into her own after being denied and demeaned... it's that the only vision of that her noble family offers is one of conquest and domination.

The texture of how male characters (and other female characters) parallel and contrast with a female lead falling to this kind of corruption is the key thing to me, when I decide whether I think the text is trying to talk about toxic hierarchical power in general can be... or about women having power being somehow bad. So I think the way D&D depicted Dany's corruption arc was disgustingly sexist. But I don't think that about Rhaenyra's arc because of the way the writing on the characters around her contrasts and parallels with her. Helaena and Viserys are both able to sense something of the all-consuming danger of the power their family claims to control (but are that they are, in fact, owned and shaped by) and reject elements of it; Viserys also abused absolute power when he felt particularly tempted and Rhaenyra's corruption has her taking on povs and behaviors similar to her uncle and brothers. And this very season the show had Alicent talk about her own experience of how power *wields you*--and changes you-- as much as you might try to wield it.
