Let's Listen to Spooky Stories!

For the past several years I've been listening to more and more audio dramas. Even though I stick mostly to horror and horror-adjacent shows, there are so many now, covering such a wide range of subjects and sub-genres, finding something new can feel overwhelming. From anthologies that have been posting non-stop since the early 2010s, to brand new, experimental narratives hoping to gain a foothold, there is a LOT of sort through. So for my own spreadsheet-oriented mind, I started to keep track of what I've listened to and what comes next, and in the hopes that my efforts can benefit others, I've decided to make this blog.

Each post here will feature a particular audio drama. I'll include a link to where you can find it, a description, and maybe most importantly, I'm going to be tagging each one with a variety of genres, formats, and other considerations. Ideally you'll be able to click on an area of interest and scroll through shows that fit the bill.

I'm also considering the occasional themed rec list, for things like, "I finished TMA, what's next?" and the like.

This is NOT an effort to catalogue all audio dramas ever. I'm going to keep adding as I listen to more, and I'll be accepting suggestions and submissions, but I'm not going to guarantee 100% coverage - this is a huge medium and growing all the time.

What kinds of shows are you posting?

-All shows will be audio fiction, including dramas and anthologies. Mostly horror, but also thriller, fantasy, science fiction, and lighter shows that feature supernatural elements. I will not be posting actualplays, nonfiction, or straight up audiobooks (with a few exceptions, possibly).

Have you listened to all of them?

-Yes! But not all 100%. Every show I post I will have listened to at least a few eps to get a feel for it.

Can I suggest a show?

-Absolutely, please click on the Submission form above. You don't have to fill it out entirely, as long as I can research it from the name alone I can take it from there. But if you know the show well, anything you can offer is greatly appreciated. If you'd rather just send an ask, my box is open, too!

Even if it's a show I make?

-Yes, creators are welcomed and encouraged to send me their shows!

Are you tagging for trigger warnings?

-No, I'm sorry, but especially for shows I'm not able to listen to all the way through, I don't trust myself to be thorough. Please check each show's warnings.

-Not here, as I'd like for the blog to be as neutral-to-positive as possible.

How are you tagging anthologies?

-I'm not, hahaha. Anthologies will have an "anthology" tag, and maybe a genre IF it applies to the anthology as a whole. But some of these anthologies have hundreds of eps, ain't nobody got time to tag everything in them.

Can I ask you for specific recs?

-Yes! I like the idea of themed rec lists (historical fiction + vampires, where to find more "gave your boyfriend a tape recorder" pods etc) and am happy to respond to those kinds of asks.

Do you like The X-Files and Men in Black? This might be the show for you! Agent Stoker follows the man himself as he rushes from one bizarre case to the next, in a world where just about anything goes: ghosts, rogue AI, hive minds, bizarre mutations, magic. The production value and acting quality are both very high; it's as cinematic as the genre can be, and the pacing is swift - there is a LOT going on.

It does, however, suffer from an unfortunate case of "the recurring villain is mentally ill." At times it's pretty iffy, but I do find the character very interesting, charismatic, and often sympathetic, and his relationship with the protagonist is complicated and engaging. Still, YMMV on the portrayal.

Perfect if you're looking for a meaty paranormal thriller to sink your teeth into, hammy and breezy and packed full of lively characters.

A Scottish Podcast

'A Scottish Podcast' is a serialised modern audio drama.

It chronicles the story of Lee, a washed up former radio DJ who launches a paranormal investigation podcast.

Lee wants to see his show The Terror Files mentioned up there alongside podcasts like The Black Tapes, Limetown, and The Message. And he’ll stop at nothing to achieve it.

Aided by his jaded musician pal Dougie, the pair travel the length and breadth of the country in search of Medieval Demon Kings and Lovecraftian Gods of the Sea.

So why not join them on this unique tour of the ancient and mystical lands of Scotland?

You’ll walk through the long-forgotten catacombs under Edinburgh. Sail out to the lonely and abandoned island of St.Caillic. Visit dingy pubs, run-down industrial estates, and obscure non-league football grounds.

This is one of those OGs inspired by The Black Tapes that I personally didn't start listening to until recently. Like the summary says, it's a meta story about Lee trying to get a horror podcast off the ground. Season 1 is way more about the creation of a spooky podcast that it is about BEING a spooky podcast, so don't expect a lot of scares. In fact, the main draw is two friends constantly ragging on each other. Some parts of the show haven't aged well (I'm not fond of the running gag about a senile old woman), but overall it's a fun time.

Perfect if you're looking for a buddy comedy about podcasts with lots of crude jokes, cheesy monologues, and the occasional real scare.

Silentium

A solo-narrator horror fiction podcast following Vatican linguist Father Tommaso Lanza as he investigates deaths for the Custodia Ultimae Vocis. Each episode documents a new case as he attempts to translate an ancient, impossible language that appears only at the moment of death.

This may be another "man speaks furtively into his recorder" podcast, but it's not one you're gonna want to miss. The focus on history and religion is really interesting as it asks, what if God's "miracles" were cosmic horror?

Perfect if you're looking for moody, academic horror, of if you have an interest in linguistics particularly.

Hearthbound

Odessa's just trying to get home to her wife, but along the Loneliest Road in America, she'll encounter strange hosts, stray souls, and echoes of the past she's running from... or running towards.

Hearthbound is an award-winning folk musical audio drama, set across a post-apocalyptic Great Basin. It's a road trip, a queer love story, and a ballad for ecological restoration. You coming our way?

Hearthbound is basically if you re-imagined The Odyssey as a cozy, post-apocalyptic musical road trip. It begins with flavors of Alice Isn't Dead - a woman on the road, hoping to pick up her long-lost wife (Penelope) on her CB. But despite the "something horrific has left America a scattered wasteland" setting, the tone is very chill and hopeful.

Perfect if you're looking for a gentle story about people connecting and reconnecting, and/or you're a fan of folk music.

Liars & Leeches

Grief. Anxiety. Terror. Tonya Wright felt it all after the tragic murders of her sister and brother-in-law in a random act of gun violence. Struggling to travel outside of her home, she now lives constantly on edge about perceived threats that seem to surround her.

Retreating to the house her sister and brother-in-law once shared to process her grief, Tonya soon discovers that someone — or something — has followed her there. With the help of her best friend Natalie, and others she meets along the way, can Tonya overcome her fears before they completely consume her?

The first original audio drama from Hemlock Creek Productions, “Liars & Leeches” is a fictional horror podcast that delves deep into the complicated horrors of grief, trauma, resilience, and steadfast human determination to uncover the truth.

This is another relatively short, well-paced thriller. Like the synopsis says there are some heavy, real-world themes very prominently featured, including some things not mentioned above, so take the content warning seriously. The show is a full cast that follows Tonya and Natalie closely, while also making use of a narrator. It's tense and engaging, and though I was initially thrown by a shift in tone partway through, it leads to some very interesting possibilities for season 2, if/when it materializes (looks like their Indiegogo was successful but no ETA yet).

Perfect if you're looking for some tightly packed tension, explorations of trauma and empowerment, and iron-clad friendship.

SCP: Find US Alive

Find Us Alive follows the strange developments at Site-107, a small Foundation research site trapped inside dimensional anomaly SCP-6320, as narrated by the site’s radio operator, Dr. Harley.

This podcast is based on the infamous internet mythos of the SCP Foundation, but you don't have to be familiar with any of that backstory to jump in here, as the show sets everything up fresh. Told in semi-found audio format, the story follows a small, core group of voiced characters as they navigate the challenges of living in a pocket dimension with very little hope of rescue surrounded by several dozen coworkers. It's a long-running show that covers a lot of ground: science fiction scenarios, interpersonal conflicts, trust and betrayal, trauma and camaraderie. The tone is very lighthearted for the most part, sometimes bordering on slapstick, but it knows when to turn up the drama.

Perfect if you're looking to bite into a longer show that knows how to balance humor and drama, and/or a found family story where everyone is actually allowed to be messy from time to time and still deeply care for each other.

Afflicted

Lovecraft Country meets True Blood in this new series from award-winning producers Tonia Ransom and Jen Zink. In season one, a small East Texas town suffers supernatural disasters caused by a demonic book bound in human flesh…and only hoodoo can save the town from its affliction.

Another great example of a relatively short, full cast thriller. Things go from bad to worse righ away as a supernatural catastrophe descends on a small, Texas town, isolating it's diverse and likable cast of characters from the outside world. There's a lot packed into these slim 10 episodes: lots of drama and gore, family bonding and grotesque creatures. There was a season 2 planned which has not materialized, but it was going to be a different, stand alone story; season one's Gunnaway story does come to a conclusion, even if some things are left open, so no need to worry about being dumped on too big of a cliffhanger end.

Perfect if you're looking for a tightly paced and dramatic thriller with plenty of blood and gore.

The Occurrence in River Oaks

Take an original, terrifying journey through one very long day in the titular small town, as heard through the viewpoint of the local law enforcement personnel; specifically, Olivia, the woman running the dispatch radio at the Sheriff’s office, as she tries to hold everything together when her entire world is falling apart. As the several officers under her command come face to face with a very unexpected threat, and as Olivia tries to navigate a dangerous and otherworldly creature’s arrival, everything slowly begins to fall apart over the course of 8 grueling episodes. No one is safe, and as the world becomes very small and extremely dangerous for the characters, they must do everything in their power to protect not only the citizens of River Oaks, but the entire world.

This is another example of a short, sweet, fun romp. The story follows Olivia pretty much exclusively, communicating with other characters over phone and radio as their small American town turns into a creature feature. It's well paced and nicely contained, extremely heartfelt, even if the production value is significantly lower than similar shows coming out now (warning for some pretty high pitched SFX). And if you know how walkie-talkies actually work, make sure to forget all that before you go in.

Perfect if you're looking for a relatively short, complete, old school sci-fi thriller.

This House Will Devour You is a historical horror set in 1920s England and Ireland, as told by letters between an engaged couple. It's a slow burn supernatural story in season 1 that I think absolutely fits the bill, but season 2 adds more adventure and starts to feel more like The Mummy.

MERCY and Dead West are both American Western horror, but I'm less familiar with them.

Oh and The Harrowing of Minerva Damson which at least begins in 1915, but I think that's more outright vampires than creepy mystery?

Alice Isn't Dead

A truck driver searches across America for the wife she had long assumed was dead. In the course of her search, she will encounter not-quite-human serial murderers, towns literally lost in time, and a conspiracy that goes way beyond one missing woman.

This is a classic from one of the creators of Welcome to Night Vale. It's told entirely from the POV of a singular narrator (whose name you don't learn until almost the end of season 1) as she travels the country as a truck driver, searching for her missing wife, broadcasting her travels via CB. It's eerie, it's heartfelt, and the conspiracy is as weird and dreamlike as you might expect from Joseph Fink. And apparently now is a great time to get into it, like I did, because a sequel is coming in April 2026.

Perfect for fans of slow burn, weird horror, with a quiet, tense atmosphere, and especially if you're looking for a really good female and/or queer and/or POC protagonist.

The Beating Heartland

"The Beating Heartland" is a bi-weekly Midwest horror audio drama. Follow the story as radio show host Denver Baughman, with the help of a mysterious agency, tries to piece together the puzzle of his horrifying past through his radio show, therapy sessions, and interrogations.

If you've ever listened to horror fiction podcasts you're going to be familiar with the basic format here: individual spooky stories told by a protag that over time prove to be connected. So far so TMA. HOWEVER, TBH has it's own unique take here. There are three levels to the story from the get go: the stories protagonist Denver reads as part of his spooky radio show; the stories about his own life Denver tells to his therapist; and the interrogation interviews Denver gives to the "mysterious agency" as mentioned in the official synopsis. The cutting between them helps keep things fresh, and the connection between the stories are for the most part more immediately apparent than in some versions of this trope. Halfway through season 1 things start to open up and branch out considerably, as the cast fills out and character interactions intensify. I'm not fully caught up so I'm not sure where season 2 ends (it did so just recently) but I'll update once I know.

Perfect if you're looking for something in a similar vein to Magnus or Ghost Wax, or if you're interested in a midwest take on the classic supernatural conspiracy horror.

The Gospel of Haven

The Gospel of Haven is a horror podcast exploring the intersection of faith and anatomy after the end of the world. A cult has thrived inside the living body of the god they worship, But as their shelter starts to crumble, devotion won’t be enough to keep them safe.

Now THIS is a body horror podcast. Where the blurb says "inside the living body of god" it really means it - the amount of meat and meat noises in this podcast cannot be overstated. A small cast take turns reciting the gospel of their character, mostly voiceover sharing their POV of the events that unfold inside Haven. Its worldbuilding is as grotesque as it is fascinating, mixing cult religion with medicine. Can't wait to see where it goes in season 2.

Perfect if you're interested in body horror, cult horror, or squishing noises of all kinds. Pretty much a must listen if you're a Silt Verses fan.

Liminal

When their brother is trapped in a terrifying dreamscape, Dominic and Caleb risk their minds and their lives to pull him back.

Another strong entry to the Voidverse of podcasts, but a shortie this time. This limited series is about two brothers who travel into the Dreamscape, a collective subconscious for dreamers in order to rescue their third brother. Because it's short the pace is pretty brisk, and there's a lot of meat left on the bone of this premise that's begging for another go. But for what it is, the production value is very high and it's definitely worth a listen.

Perfect if you're looking for a contained, Inception-esque thriller with complex family dynamics.

The Call of the Void

In the bustling streets of New Orleans, a tour guide and a palm-reading outcast team up to unravel the mystery behind cases of sudden insanity besetting the city.

As you might have guessed from the title, The Call of the Void is a cosmic horror themed story: a mystery-thriller about protagonist Topher trying to get to the bottom of a sense-stealing affliction that's threatening his father. He teams up with a Bourbon Street fortune teller in a mix of Cthulhu and sci-fi. Season 1 is a slow burn, with its strengths in the presentation and acting.

It takes place in the same universe as Acorn's other main shows, but it came first, so you don't have to have listened to Silvertongues or Liminal to get into it.

Perfect if you're looking for a well made, moody cosmic horror that especially leans into the "see shit you shouldn't have - go mad" aspect of the genre.

On the tranquil shores of the Kalalani Island Chain, two lost souls discover they have no past. But paradise turns deadly when Roscoe Talbott and Tavi Jones uncover a conspiracy that blurs the lines between truth and lies.

Silvertongues can best be described as a classic adventure romp. The characters are fun and likeable, the pace is brisk, the story is self contained and wraps up nicely. I don't want to say too much about the nature of the plot because the reveal was part of the fun, but I will say to expect some amount of tone whiplash. The premise revealed at the end of the first ep took me off guard and was genuinely, viscerally upsetting, but the rest of the show is full of hijinks that prevents things from ever staying too dark.

It also takes placed in the same universe as Call of the Void, but you don't have to have listened to that show to enjoy this, and the tone is much lighter in general.

Perfect if you're looking for a relatively short, contained tropical adventure with fun characters, some action, some mystery, humor, and heart.
