It's been a while since I was able to do a recommendation on an original tapas comic, but here we are. This one has really amazing monster designs that inspire from marine life and is crazy on the cosmic horror level. I was actually pretty surprised at Eel's personality, but I grew to like all the characters, and the character development between them is pretty wonderful. The yandere takes a bit to kick in though. As of current, this comic has about 25 chapters.
The story starts out with Rachel running after Connie in an attempt to bully her and force her to dye her hair. Another boy named Jason tries to stop her, and Connie ends up running into an abandoned house. Connie is about to be caught by Rachel, only to end up in a cult summoning circle and summoning what she believes is demon. Connie is incredibly excited about this and comes face to face with a giant eel... who turns out is just a nice guy who really wants to eat Chinese food. Connie is frustrated by this, venting out to eel that she's being bullied by Rachel because her grades are better than hers. With the help of Eel, she's able to break out back to the surface and comes in contact with Frank who tries to smooth things out between her and Jason. Eel tries to encourage Connie to talk about her feelings (while also asking her to eat out before Rachel ends up catching her and attempting to bully Connie again. This time eel helps out by mutating Rachel onto the floor (though Eel explains that she'll be fine in a couple of hours, which she is). Connie thanks Eel for standing up for her. The next day, Connie wakes up to discover she wasn't dreaming and Eel is now in her house taking a shower. Eel comes with Connie to school where she sits at the back of the bus. We get to see Rachel interact with her mother, who is basically using Rachel to relive her own life and forces Rachel to behave in a perfect manner. Rachel as she goes to school, sees that something strange is going on with her reflection and that she's having problems remembering what happened when she got possessed by Eel. Eel tries to teach Connie about compassion and about being the bigger person before the teacher catches her talking to herself. It seems that Connie, while having high grades, doesn't seem to have an idea about what she wants to do in the future. She later is greeted by another classmate, Matthew who asks if Connie needs some guidance about what she should do about her bullying. Connie seems to have a crush on him (which Eel catches onto) before bumping into Rachel. Connie attempts to smooth things out with Rachel, but after Rachel snaps at her Connie snaps back about what happened yesterday to her. At cheerleader practice, Rachel accidentally injures herself and internally spirals. While going to the infirmary, she sees again that her reflection has morphed into a more monstrous form.
We cut to Jason, examining a strange bump on his body. It disappears after a while though his reflection showcases a monsters and Jason thinks about how he's going to ask Rachel out. Frank wakes up, having slept over at Jason's place, and starts getting jealous over the fact that Jason is going to ask Rachel out before going to look for Connie. Connie has skipped school with Eel and gone to her special place- the middle of the forest where a single chair sits- and starts to read. After a while, Frank comes over to ask Connie for advice. Connie seems annoyed because whenever Frank asks her for advice, it's always about Jason, to the point where Connie states that Frank must have a crush on him. Connie asks if what he's doing is really for Jason or for himself, which makes Frank think about his actions and apologize to Connie about not being able to help her. Connie seems happy that she's made a friend with Frank and when he goes back, fights Jason as he was about to help Rachel with dying Connie's hair again, even revealing what they did to the teacher. We get a flashback with Connie and another person, talking about the house that Connie ran into, the Werthum house, about how they worshipped an old sea god and how excited this other person was. Connie wakes up on the chair in the middle of the forest, seemingly having fallen asleep and goes back home with Eel. Meanwhile, Frank and Jason are being scolded by a teacher with the teachers trying to track down both Connie and Rachel. Rachel seems to have run out in the forest to find Connie and begs Connie to uncurse her. The two fight for a bit, before Rachel admits that she was jealous of Connie and Connie tries to give her a bit of a pep talk to help. While discussing what Rachel meant by curse, Eel explains that because his own existence goes against many laws of this world, Rachel might be experiencing some sort of hallucination (basically like how Chthulu is a monster that humans simply cannot fathom) though again, Eel tries to encourage her to do the right thing. When reaching school, Connie is dragged into the principal's office and admits the two are bullying them (though defends Frank) before running to the bathroom and vomiting something strange into the toilet. Connie freaks out about being cursed before Matthew comes in and suddenly confesses to Connie.
Connie seems nervous about the confession, though on the bus, hears rumors about what Rachel did to her. Connie goes to school and sees that Rachel has not only cut her hair but is crying due to the rumors. It seems that someone attacked Rachel at night. Meanwhile, Jason and Frank seem to be fighting as Jason is scared that Connie will sue them, while Frank seems unsettled that Jason would go so far to bully Connie just to impress Rachel. Jason sees some sort of vision, while Connie runs to her hiding place and complains to Eel as she just wants to be left alone. It's revealed that Rachel was bullied in the locker room, causing her to get angry. The next day, Connie skips school again, and Frank is accused of being gay in the locker room. This nearly gets into a fight with Frank seeing his teammate turn into a monster before the coach comes in to try to stop it. Frank has a spat with Matthew while looking for Connie and ends up fighting some sort of sea monster, which freaks not only him, but the other classmates around him. Connie wakes up to find out that she's fused with Eel.
We get a flashback with Connie trying to move the chair to the forest when she's interrupted by another guy, who ends up helping her out because he too is an outcast. Connie skips school for a couple of days because of the fusion with Eel, something that even Eel seems to not understand. Matthew talks to one of the teachers and seems to miss Connie greatly while Connie returns to the Werthum house only to find that they can't get in. Eel exams a symbol on the side of the entrance, which seems to be a mark that is left by the cult that worships Eel. Connie and Eel find a different entrance and finds someone hiding in the fireplace before it grabs Connie. We get a flashback to Connie and the mysterious person moving the couch to the forest. Back in the present, the monster that grabs Connie begs her to help. We get a flashback to Rachel when she first went to school before we find out that the monster that attacked Connie was Rachel. Rachel returns back to her human form and asks if Connie has found a cure. Rachel explains to Connie that she was hiding because of the fish monster she could turn into, explaining that she can hear it inside of her. She gets angry before apologizing to Connie, admitting that she was jealous and that she felt like she didn't even know what she was trying to achieve in her life. We learn why Rachel was angry towards Connie. While putting up posters, Rachel listens to Connie and the mysterious person talk about trying to leave town. Rachel tries to speak up to Connie, but Connie simply brushes her aside. Connie apologizes before Eel reveals himself and Connie explains that the two are fused (and cursed). Connie and Rachel start talking more, with Rachel revealing that she wanted to direct movies. Frank seems to have issue with Zac (the guy that tried to fight him) before running into another member called Estaban who tells him to ditch Jason. Frank also has been seeing his reflection change into that of a monster. Connie and Rachel run into Matthew who tries to stand up for Connie by antagonizing Rachel though Connie tries to stop Matthew. This leads to Connie choosing Rachel over Matthew. Estaban tries to reason Frank into cutting ties with Jason as Jason has been a bad influence on him, though Frank refuses as he still cares for his friend. In turn, Jason tries to stop rumors about Frank being gay from spreading. Connie and Rachel go to the principal's office to set everything straight, with Rachel and Jason ends up turning into a monster before a new monster guy comes in.
We get a flashback of Zac's family, who seems to be abusive. This leads to Zac bullying someone (the same person who helped moved Connie's chair) into the Werthum house. He tries to hide in the fireplace and despite Zac looking directly at him, doesn't see him. It seems that this person has turned into a creature, and attacks Zac in his house. Despite being shot at and hit with a bat, it evolves and ends up cursing Zac. In the present day, the monster seems to want to show Connie something and forces everyone to sleep. Everyone seems to be to go home, though the incident seemingly was covered up. Rachel stands up to her mother and Frank confesses to his parents that he might be gay. Connie is able to finally summon Eel who seems to have been caged by the new monster guy. Eel confesses that his world is filled with beings that are aware of otherworlds, and that this cultist seems to be putting various beings into Connie's friends (thus all the hallucinations that Rachel and Frank have). Eel calls in Rachel and Frank to help Connie and him fight back and protect this world. We learn that Frank's coming out was pretty successful with his parents and that Rachel's mother hit her after she talked back to her (though Rachel feels vindicated). The four of them talk about what to do next, with Connie theorizing that the monster's target is the school as that's where all the weird stuff is happening. After everyone eats, Rachel comes to sleep at Connie's place. Rachel makes sure that Connie isn't in the cult before punching a cult symbol and revealing that she might know who the monster guy is.
Rachel and Connie return to school with everyone murmuring about the two's relationship. Rachel talks about the reason why she was suspicious of the guy in the hoodie to Connie including various suspicious behavior from Jason as if he was being possessed. Connie tells Rachel and Eel that he guy's name was Cameron Whitetaker and that he went missing after he was bullied. Jason and the cheerleaders start acting weird towards Frank, Rachel and Connie, realizing that they had all been mind controlled. Rachel talks to her mom on the phone and her mom reveals that they never had the fight that caused her to get slapped. Rachel realizes that Cameron didn't disappear but rather was hiding in the school this entire time. Rachel, Connie and Frank come up with a plan to confront Cameron. They decide that Frank will be at the homecoming game as usual, with Connie and Rachel summoning him by using the fire alarm if necessary with Connie expressing fear that the other two might get hurt (though Rachel reassures her). As they search the school, Connie realizes that Cameron would be in the library before a giant sea monster grabs Rachel. Much to her surprise, Rachel comes back and tells her to run somewhere. We find out pretty soon that this is not Rachel but rather Cameron disguised as Rachel as Rachel throws a flashlight at him. Cameron teleports Connie somewhere leaving a massive hole in the school floor. We see that Frank tells a girl, Melaine to talk to her in private. Melaine seems to initially believe that Frank might have some feelings towards her, but instead Frank awakens Melaine's memory of the fish attack, whom she seems shocked that she forgot. Melaine apologizing for spreading the rumors that Frank is gay as she felt hurt that Frank had no interest in her. In the ends Melaine decides to help Frank out by signaling to him that Connie and Rachel are in danger. Frank rushes towards Connie only to find him transforming into a monster before he can get to her.
Cameron brings Connie to the infinite ocean and surprisingly is pretty friendly towards Connie. He's even surprised that Connie seems to care about the world ending given that he assumed this was something that Connie would've liked. Cameron reveals to Connie that everything that he did was for Connie's sake and that he did all this to make Connie the main character in a horror story, just like the ones she used to read, and even revealed that he was the one who gave her Eel. It seems like he plans to flood this world with the infinite ocean (the place that Eel comes from) before asking Connie if she would run away with him to the world of the infinite ocean. He wants to merge Connie with an angler fish so he can merge with her forever just like what actual angler fishes do. Connie refuses, but Cameron tries to convince Connie that the two of them are outcasts and that it was her dream to run away long ago. Cameron doesn't believe this as she's only had Eel for a couple of weeks, but is interrupted by Rachel in her monster form, to which Cameron states that if Rachel wants to be free of her monster form, she simply has to kill Connie. Rachel of course refuses, and Connie starts to transform into the angler fish monster. Rachel feigns trying to kill Connie but instead saves her and attacks Cameron, allowing the two to escape before being attacked by another monster. This allows Cameron to take out the monster from Rachel and put her into the infinite ocean. Cameron commands his minions to look for Connie while Connie walks around devastated at what happened with Rachel. Matthew tries to save Connie, but Connie is angered by the fact that Matthew was working with Cameron this entire time. Matthew tells Connie there's a way to close the gate so that the world won't be flooded and Cameron finds out that Matthew betrayed him. Connie forgives and tries to help Matthew because of Eel's influence, though Connie gets caught by Herbert, a giant axolotl monster. Matthew tries to talk Herbert down but gets smashed and Connie gets eaten by Herbert.
We get a flashback of Rachel and Connie watching movies together and Connie encouraging Rachel to make movies. Matthew is able to poison Herbert in his monster form. Cameron gets sick of this and gets Connie to transform into her angler fish form, and she bursts out of Herbert. Cameron incapacitates Matthew before trying to merge with the new monster Connie. Meanwhile, thanks to Frank leaving, everyone is arguing on the football field and everyone starts turning into monsters. Frank attempts to save Rachel while Connie tries to kill Cameron out of rage and then attacks Frank as well. Cameron seems to be heartbroken at what happened, afraid of being alone and Connie rejecting him as he has no one else in this world. Eel is able to connect with Frank, encouraging him to break through to Connie and wake her up. Through fighting, talking and literally ripping apart his monster self, he's able to get through to Connie. Connie gains consciousness and talks to an old Eel. Connie with her love of her friends is able to calm down the rage of the angler fish and return to her old self. Connie struggles to get to the gate where Rachel is before seeing Cameron trying to kill Jason. We get a flashback of Jason making the football team and his family being proud of him. Meanwhile, Frank after Connie is able to separate with the angler fish though is worried about Rachels body and she has been buried by rubble. Cameron ends up fighting Frank and Matthew attempts to take care of Rachel's body. The last couple of chapters starts Matthew's backstory.
It has been a hot while since I did a recommendation on a English made comic- I think the last and only other one I did was Idyllic Island which was very fun to read, though that one was pretty different plot wise as one of the main characters was the yandere- that and it's not cosmic horror. This comic is pretty impressive since it's been ongoing for about 10 years, and there's a lot of things I like about it. First of all, the monsters in this series are really cool. They're all based on some marine or water based animal and their powers are often associated with each type too (for instance, Frank's animal is a seahorse whose bones are on the outside of their body, so when Cameron destroys the seahorse's bones it also breaks Frank's bones as well). It's one of those things where you can really tell that the creator has an interest in marine animals and the type of cosmic horror, which is awesome. I like Connie's design too- no eyebrows, a bit on the chubbier side and it's really funny watching her do various expressions. Rachel has a great character arc and Frank is just generally a good character. The one I was most surprised about was Eel, mostly because I was surprised that he is the moral compass of the crew, considering his existence in this world is partially what was causing the world to flood, but I actually really like him and his gluttonous ways. Still despite this, I think the pacing of this comic... is a bit lopsided, I guess. For one, we never really see why Frank was friends with Connie in the first place, especially since we never really see the backstory of how the two meet. While it is established that Frank at least cares for Connie as friend, it doesn't really feel like they've known each other for that long, which confused me, especially since they were able to get chummy with each other really fast. The other issue I have with it is Cameron and Connie's first conversation about how much she's changed in the two weeks since she met Eel. Cameron states that Connie used to be someone who was more of a loner, wanted to run away from town and loved horror, which is why Cameron did all this in the first place, but at least from what we saw of her, it was kind of hard to see that being true. Yes, we did have backstories of Connie with Cameron, her loving horror and even being excited when Eel was summoned and just trying to be alone, but with the way Eel changes Connie, it's sort of hard to believe that Connie would've actually loved everything that Cameron was doing. Part of this perhaps might just be Cameron's delusion, after all, we don't know how long Cameron and Connie knew each other, but Connie herself says that she's changed because of her new friends. Finally the last thing is the monsters themselves appearing in school. Many times in the story, there will be transformations from various characters where mostly the main character will be the only one who sees it or collectively everyone forgets about it. Storywise, this does make sense as Cameron is the one changing everyone's perspective half the time so it does make sense in the story, but sometimes it confuses me as a reader because it's not always explained if what they saw was viewed by everyone/ was something that was real to begin with. They do something cool with this by hiding the fact that Cameron has been watching everyone in plain sight, with his limbs sometimes sticking out in random panels, so I can appreciate it on that front.
Rachel's arc is probably the best out of the main three, as she goes from bully to friend to Connie's crush. I really like how they are able to showcase why Rachel acts the way she does, mostly because of her overbearing and frankly narcissistic mother combined with her jealousy of Connie trying to run away. I think that her arc of standing up to her mother, cutting her hair and talking about her dreams of being a directer are done very well and I went from finding her annoying to really rooting for her. I think that her friendships with both Connie and Frank feel genuine as she tries to save her from Cameron and her struggles with her inner monster (or I guess the monster implanted in her) really made the moments where she cried out to Connie feel more pitiful and I really feel for her. Frank I also like because like Eel is does the right thing when needs be, like turning himself and his own crush Jason in for bullying Connie and of course saving Connie in the story, even to the point of almost having all of his bones broken. Out of all the character's in the story I would say that he's the most steady in terms of characters, where his growth is more about learning about himself and accepting himself for who he is instead of making excuses for Jason's sake. The page where Frank's parents accept his coming out was pretty cute too (especially the dad trying to get him to buy a boat for him, which I always find funny). Finally there's Connie and Eel. Personally I think that Connie's development of who Cameron saw her as and her current state is still really fast since apparently according to Cameron, it had only been two weeks since she got Eel. While I do agree that Eel is a very good influence on Connie, getting her to be the bigger person, apologize to Rachel for what she did and give forgiveness, it is still surprising that she apparently changed so much in a short amount of time, as even with a good influence like Eel it can take a very long time for people to change, even if they want to. Still, I will say that I did love the friendship that the three developed together and Eel especially has the best interactions with Connie, with Eel basically being like a sibling that tries to get Connie to do the right thing (and loves eating). Speaking of Eel, he probably is actually my favorite character as not only is his personality the complete opposite of what Connie and I thought it would be, but he is just fun to be around. With Connie's interactions with him, his gluttonous appetite and the fact that he's both a moral compass and pretty funny makes him very enduring, even if I feel like compared to the other characters he doesn't have that many issues going on which makes him less conflicted about things. He does give a great deal of insight into the world he comes from which is cool and helps lead us to the reveal of Cameron as the big bad, but he doesn't really have an arc per say and is there to help support Connie and the other's growth instead. Still love him.
Finally we get to Cameron, the main villain and yandere of this story. I will say it's pretty telling that he wants Connie to be an angler fish and him to act as a male one, truly simp behavior (though I love it). It does make sense as Cameron did state that if he did not meet Connie he likely would've ended his life and that everything that he did was in service of what she though he would like, meaning that the two were pretty close, at least in Cameron's eyes. Like Connie, he was bullied and grew resentful of the world, but unlike Connie wasn't able to grow to be a better person, as he didn't have any positive influences like Eel, and even decided to scare and hurt his bully just for fun as well as kill people (like Matthew's dad). As a yandere, he is very obsessive and devoted towards Connie and manipulative as well. He stalks Connie and messes with the school for an entire year before revealing everything to her, and tries to manipulate both Frank and Rachel using this knowledge. He is the one who implanted Eel into her and gave a lot of the classmates Eel's various breather in. He states that he has merged with one of the monsters, though it's hard to say if his current personality was warped by it or if this was what he was like in the past. Cameron is a good foil to Connie and it shows what Connie would've been like had she not had Eel and gained good friends. I really love how he first officially reveals himself to Connie in a sort of "haha, gotcha" since it does show that he still does find himself to be a friend to Connie and doesn't understand how she could change to be the person she is now. It's just very enduring to me. Cameron ultimately struggles with lonliness, as he's also afraid that Connie will leave him, and that he will have nothing left, clinging onto her and hopefully merging with her completely. I do like that he is pretty pathetic in terms of a yandere (at least towards Connie) since he gets wrecked pretty quickly by the angler fish (not even just Connie, but rather Connie's anger) while still being menacing to the others, as he nearly kills Frank and is able to send Rachel's soul to the great beyond. The balance is really nice and I hope to see more about his backstory in the future.
So yeah, despite a couple of flaws with pacing, I do like the story of The Curse of Eel. It's funny, cool, hearfelt and it is just an interesting tale with a yandere as the villain. I like the characters and how they develop, their friendships with each other and how the yandere is a mix of being sort of pathetic and menacing. If you enjoy cosmic horror and need that kind of ich, this will scratch it for you.
[ @weatheringfeelingsvn ] can you believe its been like over 2 years since i last drew fanart. thats insane (ft. a redesign of my mc + voice actor joke)
A shoujo story where you need to hide from (or kill) your generic bishounen senpai because you accidentally saw him in his man-eating monster state and the only way you can detect his presence is when you nosebleed when they have their eyes on you.
