“We are descended from the Witches you couldn’t burn!”
It’s a nice sentiment, I like the energy, I do. That said, I am actually descended from a “Salem Witch,” and my Ancestor, Mary Isham Towne, was not burnt at the stake, she was hanged by the neck until dead. We’re not savages y’know.
Furthermore, Mary Isham Towne was a churchgoing, god-fearing woman, who just so happened to be a widow who owned a piece of land that the local judge wanted to purchase, but which she refused to sell, and which he set out to acquire pretty much immediately after he sentenced her execution.
So, y’know.
☝️FUCKING FACTS
You can't just leave this in the tags
Reminder in the word “Witchcraft” there is craft. There are many different kinds of crafts (woodcarving, metal work, pottery, painting, scrapbooking, etc). Just like how there are many types of crafts there are many types of witchcrafts (glamour, weather magic, death work, spirit work, etc). There are many ways to use tools in crafts like different gluing techniques people use that ultimately are different but bring the same result. Just how many different techniques of using tools are all valid (different ways of shuffling a deck, different ways of reading flames or incense in spell work, etc)
I see a lot of new beginner witches stressing about the minor details or asking questions “my candle flame did ___ what does that mean?” or “I don’t have this [herb] can I use [different herb] instead?”. Which truth be told I don’t know.
It’s a craft built and influenced by your own energy. I don’t know the intricacies of your spell work and the energy you’re bringing in for it to tell you that. I don’t know if that candle flame is good or bad because I'm not in the room with that candle's energy, I don’t know what that candle' s for and I don’t have your energy that it’s interacting with.
The reason craft is in the word witchcraft is that it’s a craft. You make stuff you like, make stuff you don’t like, get times where you need a break or go through blocks, make small mistakes that work out, make small mistakes that don’t, try new things and build your own methods, etc.
You can only build your own methods comfortably by doing your own crafting. Art classes or guide books can help build a better understanding of techniques but ultimately no one is making a carbon copy of each other because they know the same techniques, have the same tools, and the same prompt.
Long story short the key to excelling within your witchcraft practice isn’t asking the witch with decades of experience under their belt what is and isn’t okay and feeling entitled for an answer, the real key is fucking around and finding out and learning the hard way.
the 1st of the month ♡
the first of any month is typically regarded as a good time to refresh, renew, and attract abundance and luck so here are some ideas on how to do so!
say "rabbit rabbit!" for good luck all month long
set intentions and goals for the new month
perform a divination reading to forecast the month ahead
light a scented candle or incense to set the tone for the rest of the month
renew your wards
craft a money bowl or renew the one you already have
blow a pinch of cinnamon inside for good luck and abundance (avoid this if you have animals in the house or live with someone who has respiratory issues)
place a cinnamon stick above your front door and replace monthly instead of doing the above
cleanse your space
clean/cleanse your altar, tools, and crystals
write or draw symbols of abundance on a bay leaf and keep it in your wallet - burn it at the end of the month before you make a new one
open your windows to air out stale, stagnant energy
sweep your floors out the front door
blow a handful of salt out of your front door to release the things that no longer serve you
mop your floors with a cleansing floor wash; use this wash to clean doors and doorframes (obvs not using dirty mop water but an entirely fresh batch of the wash lol)
sprinkle salt on your doorstep and windowsills for protection after cleaning and sweeping
take a ritual bath or shower with the goal of cleansing yourself of negative vibes and inviting positive vibes in its place
if it applies, don't forget to: drink some water, gas up your vehicle, pay your bills, fill your prescriptions, take care of your physical and mental health, and stay golden

july full moon 🌕🦌
there are tons of names for each full moon and i'd recommend reading about those given within the region where you live; for example pacific northwest terms for this moon may include chokecherries, while eastern US regions reference blueberries. i'm going to list a couple here that are pertinent to my region, the midwest US.
the buck moon, a name likely created by american colonizers, referring to male deer's full grown antlers at this time of year
the hay moon, also a colonizer-derived term, referencing the july hay harvest period. this term is also found in england, referring to the same period (as the practices were imported and imposed in the US)
the wyrt moon (or wort, herb moon), a modern borrowing from old english [wyrt]. this is a similar concept to the actual old english terms for the months of july [mǣdmōnaþ], meaning meadow month, & august [weodmōnaþ], meaning weed (as in any vegetation) month. the modern borrowing refers to a time of year to gather herbs and plant medicines to process and store.
the thunder moon, a western abenaki term [pad8gikas] referencing the high amount of thunderstorms we have at this time of year
the grass cutter moon, a western abenaki term [temaskikos], referring to the time when new sprouts appreciate nurturing care, as they complete their rush towards the sun. this moon is also traditionally associated with sweetgrass (hierochloe odorata) braiding
the berry moon, an ojibwe & potawatami name [miin giizis – blueberry moon, minaakwedi-giizis – picking blueberries moon, minke gises – pickling blueberries moon (potawatami), & ode’imini-giizis – strawberry moon] referring to the ready-to-harvest wild berries
the bursting moon, an ojibwe term [baapaashkizige-giizis] with much more difficult to trace meaning. it may refer to to the shooting out of seed pods and the bursting of buds, or perhaps was a more modern name referencing fourth of july fireworks

@breelandwalker buck moon - july 29, 2026
my practices for this july full moon include:
a bonfire – with singing and dancing and milling around the fire
bread-baking magic – eating bread, or making poppet bread, etc.
harvesting – from the garden, preparing herbs & foods, kitchen witchery
& my standard full moon rituals
the emperor - stephanie law
the buck moon in name and premise reminds me of the various buck figures in tarot decks i use:
the emperor (verdance tarot): the sovereign. stability, power, discipline, strength and leadership, responsibility, rigid thinking, security in life, confidence
six of wands (verdance tarot): the triumphant. triumph, victory, achievement, recognition, self-confidence, pride
eight of wands (verdance tarot): the messenger. momentum toward a goal, progress, focus, ambition, initiative, rapid change, action, seizing the moment, communication flows
knight of wands (verdance tarot): the energizer. courageous, fearless, reckless, charming, passionate, free-spirited, following your heart
the stag (wildwood tarot; traditionally strength): represents taking responsibility for your actions, being aware of consequences, being honest, and having integrity.
six of acorns (spiritsong tarot; acorns = fire/wands): success, triumph, power, enthusiasm, leadership, recognition, strength
additionally, a quote from the verdance tarot guidebook pertaining to the qualities of the deer & stag:
deer: grace, intuition, intelligence
stag: majestic power, strength

Lammas festival journal prompts
August 1st is the celebration of Lughnasdah / Lammas in the witch tradition. If you're not sure how to celebrate, it's simple - light a source of fire (as small as a candle or as large as a bonfire), and sit next to the flame with your journal.
Meditate about what harvesting mean to you.
Journal prompts:
🧡 Write about what you are harvesting in your life at the moment. What are you grateful for? What do you regret?
🧡 Make a list of everything you've accomplished in your life / in the last ten years / in 2026.
🧡 What will you miss most about summer once fall comes?
🧡 Write about professional goals and plans you have for September. What do you want to achieve? Where do you want to go?
🧡 How can you live a healthier life by next summer? What changes can you make in the year ahead that you will be able to harvest next summer?
🧡 What is one thing you love about where you live? Watch the nature around you. Write about what sparks joy.
🧡 What does abundance mean to you?
🧡 What does your body need right now? Is it rest, nourishment, movement, sunlight?
Day 1
Busy day today, didn't get much time for my practice. But did a nice yoga session and a little journaling at my altar.
A tip for anyone who deals with chronic stomach issues or chronic illnesses that affect your stomach, anyone who deals with nausea, indigestion, or the like:
I make popsicles and keep them on hand. Lemon juice + ginger, lemon juice + mint, chamomile tea + lemon juice (this one is also great for stress, cramps, or to have as a snack before bed). You can do all sorts of combinations using juices, herbs, teas, etc. Whatever works for you and your symptoms, give it a try. If you don't have popsicle sticks, you can make ice cubes with the same things and suck on the ice instead.
It's something I've done for years now, and it's so helpful and handy to just be able to grab a popsicle when my chronic illness issues mess with my stomach (I deal with a lot of nausea, pain, and not always being able to keep food down, personally). It's especially nice in the summer.
They're fantastic for stomach issues. You can also add sweeteners like sugar syrups, honey, or similar, just be sure to research how your preferred sweetener freezes and holds up in the freezer.
nature through my lens
For all my literal-thinking or ND witches out there:
"Do whatever works best for you"
Translation: "Use correspondences and techniques that feel the most powerful, magical, and correct to you, as long as it's internally consistent with your worldview (if basil means love to you, don't turn around and use it in a baneful working for example)."
"It's all about your intention"
Translation: "The way you plan out spells, choose correspondences, craft items, write incantations, etc are all ways of imbuing intention throughout the working; you still have to back your intention up with spellcraft and work, it's not as simple as meditating on an idea."
"It depends on your tradition/path"
Translation: "If you are a devotee of a specific religion, spirituality, or practitioner of a specific kind of magickal art, follow the collective wisdom from that path as it will be the most meaningful to you; if you are new to the craft or not keen on following specific paths and want freedom to explore, do whatever feels the most magical to you in this instance."
"Always have personal protections"
Translation: "In my opinion, you should have personal protections before you engage in other types of spellcraft because it gives you a sense of control and stability going into the working; a personal protection can be anything that achieves that sensation of being shielded, protected, and safe."
"Direct your energy into the target"
Translation: "Play with various techniques until you achieve a strong sensation of some of your internal power, energy, heat, or life force leaving your body and transferring into the target; it will be subtle but undeniably there."
be busy. busy not checking messages. busy reading those books you never started or finished. busy having a good night of sleep. busy taking care of yourself and your skin. busy moving your body. busy helping your community. busy reflecting on your life and what you can improve. busy doing things aside from the capitalistic viewpoint of “productivity.” busy slowing down.

Sufficiently Advanced Witchcraft is Indistinguishable from Chores Part 1:
I rise before dawn, as I do most mornings. The forecast calls for intermittent rain and thunderstorms all day, I want to stay in bed, but in a strange echo of my North Dakota farming ancestors I have chores that must be done early, then I can rest in the afternoon. I take my medication, the first handful of pills of the day there will be more, then get in the shower. As I wash myself I recite the prayer that I begin every morning with, the Litany for the Forgotten. 11 verses of epithets, kennings, and invocations calling on the Forgotten Ones and vowing to never again let them be lost. By the time I speak the last words I am clean and the water is off, the rhythm of this is practiced and familiar, comforting. It is the rhythm of every morning of my adult life.
Now that I am clean I dress for my day, natural fibers as much as possible to keep my oaths to Drove and Amaranth, and I step out into the living room where a corner is dedicated to my craft and my spiritual life. Today is the third Saturday on the month so I have some of my less routine chores to do
Energy Battery Management: So much of my practice relies on the use of these batteries. I can’t count on being able to pull from my own personal energy at any given time, or being able to schedule a working at a magically significant time, so I store the energy I might want to work with to use when I feel well enough to use it. On the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month I take inventory, and if I’m feeling well enough make deposits into my stores. Today is not a deposit day, I can barely hold myself upon on my crutches, so I collect my stash of batteries and take them to my couch to review what energies I have collected and how much.
Spirit Vessel House Keeping: I don’t have the energy to “turn over” the vessels I use for my spirit inn immediately after one guest leaves, and I rarely need to flip them that quickly, so on the 1st and 3rd Saturday I gather up all of the currently empty vessels and give them a little freshening so that they’re read for the next guest.
Feed the Money Bowl: I light the chime candle in my money blow and let it burn for a few minutes while I empty all of the loose change I’ve acquired over the week into the bowl.
Pain Taking Ritual: It’s the perfect day for this ritual, it’s easier when I am in more pain. I extend my sense across my neighborhood feeling for the pain of others and I draw it to me. I reach further targeting specific people and their specific pains, physical, emotional, spiritual. I draw all of it into me and mix it into the inexorable pain that has become a part of my soul since I was a teenager - each one a raindrop in the ocean. And then I turn around and offer all of that pain to Brona - Lady of Pain, Lady of Healing, Lady of the Way Between Illness and Healing. She does not take it from me, the suffering and sacrifice is the point, but she comforts me and reminds me of why it’s worthwhile.
Now the thunder is rumbling and the lightning is flashing and pain brain is setting is. The work is done and I can rest.
Feedback Candle Spell
This is a sort of reversal spell, to redirect someone's negative energy back at them and let it disrupt their life.
Black candle
Drop of olive oil
Powdered mustard seed
Pin or needle
To do
Carve the name of your target into your candle. Focus on their hold on you loosening.
Anoint the candle with a drop of olive oil. Just a touch is plenty. Be safe and don't overdo it.
Sprinkle the powdered mustard seed onto the candle.
As you light the candle, say, "Every strike you throw is turned back on you. Your chaos is yours to bear. I return your poison to your well."
Let the candle burn down completely. Discard any remains.
