Spent a wee bit of time pre-Shabbos with @slewfootwitch enjoying the storm clouds and lightning whilst listening to tunes, which was lovely until my compulsive handwashing got kicked into overdrive (for those of you that don't already know, I was diagnosed with OCD back in 2017) because a stranger grabbed and held my hand. I'm glad I could be there for him, because he clearly needed to just be seen and have someone genuinely listen to him even for a few moments. It's just unfortunate that I don't do well with human touch outside of very specific environments and situations. I wish that weren't the case. I did though just hold his hand and talked with him, which I'm happy I did, for the both of us. I wouldn't have been able to do even that 4 or 5 years ago.

It really fucked with my compulsions, though, and threw off my entire routine and kept me from eating all day.

BUT... I'm actually going away for a little three-day weekend starting tomorrow, so maybe I'll be able to get back in my usual mindset whilst also relaxing and enjoying myself. One can hope! lol.

And I'll be off! Gut Shabbos! I've scheduled a post for @sheydmade here and on substack for Sunday, and there's a brand new Sheydmade piece going up next week! Huzzah! I'll be back to clearing out my inbox and chatting up a storm when I get back after Monday.

Bubbeleh, I'm really wanting to reconnect to my Judaism but I'm struggling with it. Growing up in an ultra orthodox family was traumatic for me and I'm having trouble finding peace in embracing and celebrating my Jewish identity while also feeling so reminded of bad memories when I try to do so. I'm in therapy and have been for years and that helps, but I'm in need of some hope I think. Do you have any words for me?

My words are to always remember that you are not what has happened to you. Likewise, your Jewishness does not have to be defined by those who have traumatized you, nor is it defined by that trauma. There is Judaism beyond the traumatic religious experience you've known, and you get to decide what being Jewish means to you and how it looks in your life.

There is no one way to be Jewish, and there is a world of Jewish culture, belief, practice, and identity out there waiting for you to explore it and embrace it whenever, however, and if ever you choose to do so.

I'm sorry for what you've gone through, and I hope you know healing, happiness, love, and support.

One of the worst parts of being chronically ill is how lonely it gets. You need a community to help you but you realize just how conditional your friendships are on you being able bodied.
