IN SUPPORT OF CHICAGO DYKE MARCH
Fed Up Fest is an annual punk music festival in Chicago organized by a collective of radical queer and trans activists and musicians. We aim to center the voices of queer, trans, and intersex people in our communities, and particularly the voices of people of color. As queer and trans people in solidarity with Palestine, and who are firmly opposed to pink-washing, The Fed Up Fest Collective stands in solidarity with Dyke March Chicago’s decision to remove individuals from this year’s Dyke March (6/24/17) who explicitly identified as Zionists. Like Dyke March Chicago (DMC), we center and prioritize the safety of people of color and people affected by colonialism, including Palestinian folks bearing the brunt of Israeli Apartheid. We view the occupation of Palestine as inexcusably violent, and as a pervasive force of colonialism and oppression. DMC’s decision to remove Zionists marchers was based on long conversations with the marchers in question, organizers, and fellow marchers, including several marchers who identified as Jewish Anti-Zionists.
The Star of David has existed prior to the rise of Zionism, and it has a complex history which allows for its multiple meanings and interpretations. We also acknowledge the violent reality of Anti-Semitism that our Jewish queer and trans community members face, and hold space for these struggles, especially in light of our current political climate. Anti-Semitism is a real issue that groups like DMC and FUF organize to end through anti-racist and anti-colonial perspectives, which must include critique and opposition to Israel’s violent policies in the Middle East. It is not Anti-Semitic to disallow explicitly pro-Israel, Zionist voices to take up space at DMC. The actions taken by DMC reflect an attempt to uphold solidarity with Palestinian people. Furthermore, it is significant that one of the individuals asked to leave is employed by the pro-Israel organization, A Wider Bridge, which has focused organizing activities around making inroads with LGBTQ groups in Chicago to promote a pink-washed, Zionist agenda.
While we understand that no one is above criticism - including DMC - we support the decision that DMC made at the march. We are collectively enraged by the backlash and censorship that they have experienced over the past few months, particularly now in response to this decision. Fed Up Fest will continue in its efforts to resist the harmful impacts of Anti-Semitism, Zionism, and Islamophobia, and to challenge the perpetuation of racism, colonialism, and oppression at large.
Thank you to all of the organizers and writers who have shared their thoughts with nuance, and have risked becoming targets of Zionist criticism to develop and expand the conversation about this situation.
FED UP FEST 2017 ANNOUNCED!
FUF 2017
JULY 28-30
All proceeds to benefit EL RESCATE (http://www.prcc-chgo.org/programs/el-rescate/)
STAY TUNED FOR MORE UPDATES.
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS 2016
Saturday, 12pm
Trans101: Changing Identity Documents - Transformative Justice Law Project)
Tanvi Sheth, an attorney and a collective member with Transformative Justice Law Project of Illinois, will lead a workshop about trans people and the legal system. TJLP, this year’s beneficiary, has been operating a name change clinic at the Daley Center in Cook County, and has assisted hundreds of trans and gender nonconforming folks in Chicago. This workshop is open to everyone, but is meant to help empower queer and trans communities in navigating the legal system and assist in shifting power through dissemination of information.
Saturday, 2 pm
Mad World: Radical Approaches to a Coercive Mental Health System - Lilly Barrett
Fear and suspicion of mental health institutions and providers is well-placed in the marginalized communities of today. Basic knowledge of these institutions and systems can help those most negatively impacted by them to combat the immense fear they face being stuck inside those systems, frequently against their will, and navigate the structures which some of us (trans and queer people who wish to access hormones, legal ID changes, surgeries, etc.) need to use to get necessary healthcare. This workshop is open to everyone.
Introduction to the Prison Industrial Complex - Black & Pink: Chicago
This workshop will be an introductory examination of the Prison Industrial Complex and how it affects already marginalized people. This workshop will challenge those in attendance to question their idea of “safety” and how that ensures trust in the judicial system, what “crime” is and how it is tied to systematic oppression, and will take a look at what each component of the PIC means for individuals and communities who are forcibly entered into it. This workshop is open to everyone.
Sunday, 12 pm
Let’s Check In: an Adult Sex Ed Workshop - Sarah Bernstein
This workshop is an abbreviated version of a 4-hour Adult Sex Ed Groups workshop on consent and communication. Through participatory activities and personal reflection, this workshop walks participants through examining how they communicate about sex and sexuality, identifying how they communicate and like to be communicated with, and visioning strategy for vulnerable conversations. This workshop is open to everyone.
Supporting Survivors in the Scene - Molly and TK
This workshop is about supporting survivors of assault in the DIY community and, in general, thinking about accountability through a transformative justice framework. The workshop delves into transformative justice, what it looks like, how we get there, and building support systems for survivors. Participants will openly discuss their own experiences with support, their desires, and their concerns, and take away concrete ideas to bring to their support networks. This workshop is open to everyone.
COMMUNITY of CARE 2016
Fed Up Fest strives to be a COMMUNITY of CARE.
We believe that at the center of liberation is radical love for each other and ourselves. That love pushes us to try to create a better world. Because of that, we are working to minimize the amount of harm that occurs in our space.
White supremacy, misogyny, ableism, fatphobia, and transphobia exist everywhere, even in queer spaces. They are some of the threads of which normative society is woven, and it is so hard to untangle them. If you are called out for perpetuating any of these things, please understand that it is not because you are unimportant or we wish to exclude you. We are, instead, trying to demonstrate compassion and care and do the least amount of harm towards people in our communities, particularly those with marginalized identities. Furthermore, we recognize that we are all entrenched in these systems of oppression and therefore all have work to do.
We need both love and rage in every part of our lives to carry on dismantling oppression. Punk isn’t “just music” and queerness is not an isolated identity. Both of these things can be part of radical resistance to the destructive world that we live in today, if we put in the effort to truly learn from and care about each other. We seek to forge stronger bonds and create a community that we can rely on, rather than systems of violence. Being accountable to each other is a good way to start.
Love and pogoing,
The FUF Collective

See you soon, punx!
Fed Up Fest seeks to elevate the music and visibility of queer & trans people engaging with and confronting white supremacist, heteropatriarchy and actively challenging microaggressions, cultural appropriation, and rape culture in our punk & hardcore scenes. We're looking for bands that are queer as an adjective AND queer as a verb. We're a collective of punks who want to have fun at shows rather than feel afraid, and see the necessity in actively seeking ways to destroy what destroys us (FTP, ACAB, etc.). With all of that in mind, we especially encourage Black and non-Black people of color to apply to play Fed Up Fest. We recognize the importance of prioritizing marginalized communities as a mode of combating the perpetual whitewashing of our punk & hardcore scenes. Lastly, bands comprised ENTIRELY of cis, straight, white people need not apply. Again, we are explicitly seeking to elevate queer and trans -- particularly POC -- visibility and music in punk & hardcore scenes. Thanks for applying!
The band application for this year’s fest is now open!

Brown and Proud Press is a writing collective of people of color based out of Chicago, IL. We believe in the necessity of self-preservation and creating visibility around our struggles and histories through the medium of zines. Our main project, the "On Struggling" zine series, brings together personal narratives on topics such as identity, assimilation, racism, mental health, modes of self-care and more from people of color across the country. Pick up some zines, and see how you can get involved in the collective or the next issue! facebook.com/brownandproudpress
Street Youth Rise Up Task Force & Campaign provides peer-to-peer outreach to homeless, home free and street-based youth in Chicago, many of whom are queer, trans & youth of color. They are also currently collecting data and doing research through the Bad Encounter Line, an online site (geared towards Chicago youth) to anonymously report bad experiences with institutions that are supposedly there to help, such as police, the health care system, public aid, CPS and more. Proceeds from fest tickets and merch will go towards supporting their critical work! ywepchicago.wordpress.com/our-work/our-campaign/
Sabah I’m a henna artist and make crystal stone jewelry. I also have some material zines, newspapers, stickers, etc from some movements in Mexico to show solidarity as well as some radical art.
The Feral Space/Warzone Distro is run by a small group of intersectional, queer, vegan anarchist straight edge punks from Elgin. Their main purpose is directly supporting community projects like “Food Not Bombs” and sobriety support programs, while developing community resistance to state terror. They’ll be tabling their FREE ZINES on topics including but not limited to radical veganism, anti-colonization/de-colonization, ecofeminism, gender anarchy, radical sobriety/straight edge, anti-capitalism and so on. theferalspacecollectivexvx.blogspot.com
Chloe Perkis I am a queer dork / Chicago printmaker / cartoonist / comic artist. I make funny and gross lithographs, screenprints, patches, and comix. I have a shit ton of prints to table, along with a comic that I just finished called OUCH. I am working on a few split comic collaborations with my fellow queer punk artists that should hopefully be ready in time for the fest. chloeperkis.tumblr.com
Boxcar Books & Community Center is a volunteer powered, non-profit organization that exists to provide radical and alternative books, comics, and zines on topics such as anarchism, punk, prison, queer, disability studies, etc. After we pay our bills and restock our collection, our proceeds go to the Midwest Pages for Prisoners Project (MPPP), which is housed inside our bookstore. MPPP is a volunteer-run project that sends reading materials to people incarcerated across the country. Bloomington, Indiana. www.boxcarbooks.org/
Black and Pink: Chicago is an open family of GLBTQ prisoners and "free world" allies who support each other. Our work toward the abolition of the prison industrial complex is rooted in the experience of currently and formerly incarcerated people. We are outraged by the specific violence of the prison industrial complex against GLBTQ people, and respond through advocacy, education, direct service, and organizing. www.blackandpink.org/

Rising Tide Chicago is a consensus-based, radical collective focused on addressing the root causes of climate change. We Charge Genocide is a grassroots, inter-generational effort to center the voices and experiences of the young people most targeted by police violence in Chicago. We hope to equip individuals with information, resources, and tools to hold the Chicago Police Department accountable, to reform the CPD, and in some cases to seek viable alternatives to policing. SAT wechargegenocide.org
Slut Walk Chicago aspires to educate the public about rape culture, to support each other through fun events, and to challenge mindsets and stereotypes of victim-blaming and slut-shaming. We seek to create a safer space in which victims can share their stories, empower themselves and one another, and in which sincere allies can join victims to change the world we live in. We stand for victim's rights, enthusiastic consent, body and sex positivity, and a world without sexual violence or its threat. We seek to demonstrate that real change is expected, and that anything less than real, meaningful change on both political and social levels is unacceptable. www.facebook.com/slutwalkchicago
Tayler Williams is the creator of a coloring and activity book for the privileged majority. The activity book pokes fun at, while seriously calling out people of privilege. Some examples of the pages within the book include an Iggy Azalea paper doll with cultural appropriation accessories, an ugly plus-size fashion word search, an "avoid the micro-aggressions" maze, and an Exceptional white person certificate for having 1 black friend. It serves the underprivileged and oppressed through relatable humor teamed with a sarcastic and satirical punk aesthetic. taylerwilliamsartistry.weebly.com/
Project Fierce Chicago is a grassroots collective of radical social workers, housing advocates and young people who are working together to establish identity-affirming transitional housing in Chicago. Our mission is to reduce LGBTQ youth homelessness in Chicago by providing affirming, no-cost transitional housing and support services to LGBTQ young adults. We also aim to encourage community-building and youth development through collective living & civic engagement. projectfiercechicago.org/
Willow Naeco I make buttons, bottle openers, magnets, and mirrors. I also make zines for Chicago Critical Mass, Bike Winter, and personal zines (talking about rape and other abuse). I will bring a couple of my machines so people can create their own art and have it turned into a button, magnet, etc. on the spot. www.facebook.com/wnButtons
SWOP-Chicago’s mission is to support the rights of sex workers and their communities and to focus on ending violence and stigma through education, advocacy, and peer support. Our tabling materials include brochures on the resources we have available to support other sex workers and how to get involved in our organization, our non-judgmental network of direct service providers, and our free legal clinic. We also have cute merch. www.swop-chicago.org/
Organized Communities Against Deportations (OCAD) seeks to stop deportations in our communities through mobilization, advocacy and education. Since December 2012, OCAD has led public campaigns to stop deportations in the state of Illinois and has helped families to fight deportations of loved ones by connecting them to the proper legal venues and information that can make the difference between staying in this country or getting deported. We will be tabling to get the word out regarding the work we do, up coming meetings, and workshops. www.facebook.com/OCADIL

FASN is working to address sexual and gendered violence in Chicago’s music, DIY, art, and literary scenes. We facilitate accountability processes for perpetrators of rape and abuse. We look to empower...
The FEMINIST ACTION SUPPORT NETWORK will have SUPPORT LIASONS present every day of the fest! We are so thrilled to be collaborating with this group of rad folks working to improve accountability in Chicago's DIY spaces.
READ ABOUT THEM!!
"We are working within an adapted model of transformative justice. This means that we respond to sexual and gendered violence with a process of healing from harm and working to prevent further harm. Transformative justice seeks to heal survivors, perpetrators, and the community. A carceral system (the prison industrial complex) punishes and removes offenders from the community. This system inherently perpetuates oppression and harm. Rather than replicating an unjust system, we are working from a non-coercive, non-punitive model to move toward feminist transformation and wellness in our communities."
