Ask Ethan: What Is A Scalar Field?

“Help! I'm getting somewhere with your piece on string theory but I haven't a clue what a scalar field is. I have no maths and no physics but I love the ideas and concepts. Can you explain a scalar field in words of 2 syllables please?”

Can I tell you what a challenge it is to talk about scalar, vector, and tensor fields in the context of gravity and string theory without using words that are longer than two syllables? Words I couldn’t use include:

altitude, elevation, gravity, gravitation, dimension, physical, reality, universe, energy, direction, position, and velocity.

And yet, at the end, I still think it’s a really great explanation. Maybe, if you check it out, you’ll take away something valuable, too.
