Alex Paints Things Pt. 5 Ch 1: Up Close and Personal

Been a bit. I did a lot of work during that time (for me) and whipped up a good chunk of my forward detachment; some Farsight Enclave Breachers and their transport Devilfish.

Colours here are the same throughout, what changes between the drones/soldiers and the devilfish is how much effort I wanted to put in. For the guys, I just painted them over and slapped them nuln oil and called it a day. For the Devilfish, I did the opposite; shading in to get the defined lines and then painting panels. The colours are as follows.

The base coat was mephiston red out of a spray can.

The white is good old ulthuan grey. 

The dark grey is eshen grey. 

The blue visors/view ports are runefang steel coated over with the soultstone blue technical.

The sprinkles of gold are from retributor armour.

The brown on the one breacher’s blade is done with catachan fleshtone and baneblade brown

Shading is all with nuln oil.

And some light teal bits, like at the end of the guns, is all done with vallejo blue-green.

I have a few more pieces to do in this detachment, looking forward to sharing those as well.

Alex Paints Things Pt. 4 Ch 8: Firewall

What it do. I don’t have anything new here, just a complete posting of the Fire Warrior squad I was working on.

I wont go back over the paint for the guys as that was outlined in previous chapters. The basing was done with a number of technical paints from Citadel, just giving these guys a little final touch. My schedule has opened up a lot so I plan on doing a lot more in the near future. I have a particular project I’m excited to open up the next part with soon.

Alex Paints Things Pt. 4, Ch. 7: Quick Pics of Quick Dudes

I said I was going to do one that I’ve been sitting on but then I got this urge to have a painted army for table top play even though COVID is keeping that so far away. So I now have a lot of fire warriors and I’m going through them. I’m trying to keep them looking pretty good but also letting some slips go. They are basic infantry and they don’t need to all be a masterpiece. I’m ok that they aren’t perfect because for how quick I did them (relative to my usual turtle pace), I’m quite content with them.

Lots of the same colours from my pathfinders. Ulthuan Grey for the white armor. Dark Vermillion from Vallejo for the red. A new one I got, dark reaper, for the grey bits. The gold is all retributor armour. All of that done in nuln oil. The legs/arms and feet, done with Zandri dust and ushabti bone, were both shaded in agrax. The soldiers sans helmets are as done before as well, Royal blue highlighted with blue-green and shaded in druchii violet. I have more of these guys to do so I’ll probably have another post like this coming.

Alex Paints Things Pt. 4 Ch. 6: Stealth Field Activated

Who else has a problem finishing projects? I have a bad tendency to get very close to done things (work, books, games) and then stop before completing them. That happened with this mini. It needed the final touches for about a full week. I’ve started back up work and it took away a lot of my energy for painting but I finally got this Tau stealth suit banged out.

So the base and cloaked parts are done with martian ironcrust given two generous layers with reikland fleshshade, then dry brushed with terminatus stone and given one last glazing of the same shade again. The white is simply the corax white can I used to prime the model. The red on the shoulder, gun and headpiece is done with Vallejo dark vermillion. The black and grey on the gun are varying mixes of Vallejo black and neutral grey. The light blue on the gun and on the stealth field is done with slightly whitened Vallejo green blue, and then a much more whitened version of that is used for the thin line over the field. All of the armoured bits are shaded with nuln oil.  I’m glad I finished this off. I think next I’ll be doing a model I’ve sat on for a very very long time.

Alex Paints Things Pt. 4 Ch. 5: What Was Once Old is New Again

Over a year ago, I dove head-first in to mini painting by buying the Age of Sigmar Goreblade Warband starter box. I have a few posts here of working on it. I stopped because of covid blues and got back in to painting with different models. Well I was organizing my things when I found this one, 90% done. He was missing shading on the torso and his entire head on account of me losing it a long time ago. A newer purchase I picked up gave me an extra head to use, perfect for  de-cap-i-tan over here. Here are the results of the surgery.

I don’t quite remember all that was done on the work before my hiatus. For the head, I can say that was done with Vallejo black-red, balthasar gold, ushabti bone and baneblade brown all shaded with agrax earthshade. On the base, I utilized an extra weapon from the wrathmonger box and a games workshop skull. All that on top of the same agrellan badland basing I used last time as well as some shading with agrax and dry brushing of terminatus stone. Still not sure if I’m going to keep with chaos mens or my Tau as we continue. I’ll catch a vibe and just follow that.

Alex Paints Things Ch. 4 Pt. 4: Gang

Continuing with my budding Tau Kill Team roster, I completed a natural set for such a force; some pathfinders.

These handsome devils took me a while to paint but they were a blast. The white armour plates are based in Ulthuan grey. The red is dark vermillion and the grey on the guns is a combination of payne’s grey and neutral grey. The gold is retributor armor. All the above is shaded in nuln oil. The brown is Zandri dust shaded in agrax. The skin is a base of royal blue, shaded in druchii violet, layered with blue-green and then given another layer of the same shade. The ground for the bases were made with Agrellan badland and Astrogranite Debris technical paints dry brushed with Terminatus stone. The lenses on the helmeted railfinders are based in runefang steel and then covered in soulstone blue and spiritstone red technical paints. I’m not sure whether yet to close out this chapter and maybe work on something else yet or to keep working through some Tau. I’m still just going where my heart leads me.

Alex Paints Things Ch. 4 Pt. 3: Production Value

I’m just firing these off right now. I have a lot of free time (on account of COVID) so I’ve been most of my time painting and watching The Wire. I started this guy a bit ago and just after finished the crisis suit, decided to go back and complete it before moving on.

It got a little messy at points but this guy was a lot of fun. I don’t fully get how to do the transfers yet so I’m not adding anything to that white hanging bit yet. I wasn’t sure how ambitious to be with the base but I wasn’t sure what to do so I just sort of threw moss on there. I feel like I did a good job defining the muscles and I’m very happy about that. Next up is some railfinders.

Alex Paints Things Ch. 4 Pt 2: Get in Robot, Shinji.

I’ve always been interested in getting in to Warhammer 40K but the complexity and price point were always off-putting to me. After talking to a new acquaintance about it some more, I thought I was prepared to take the leap in to wargaming. I’ve always liked the aesthetics of the Tau so I just picked up the starter box of that and got to work. I’ve built up the entire box but here is my first one painted; One of the three crisis suits it comes with.

I couldn’t help but go with the Evangelion paint scheme. I think it just works so well on this model. The body is all done in Vallejo while all the metallics were done using citadel paints. The base is simple project glue with craft store diorama snow. The ork arm on the base is compliments of a friend of mine, although I painted it and added it to the base. I’m looking forward to doing more Tau in the upcoming weeks and having a fully painted kill team not too far from now.

Alex Paints Things Ch. 4 Pt. 1: Re-Energized

This year has been some real shit. I haven’t worked since March. Work was stressful before that as we saw COVID raging around us. It really ruined my desire to do anything. It took me a long time to get that drive back and here we are with some new posts. I’m putting the Goreblade Warband box on hold for now as I delve in to more immediate concerns such as a D&D campaign I’m playing in as well my first steps in to 40K Kill Team. Here is the hexblade warlock I’m playing for the campaign, Malcolm

There were a lot more Vallejo paints used in this one. The cloak being done with Vallejo black red and trimmed with cork brown, both being layered over with agrax earthshade. The blade is a simple combo of leadbelcher with nuln oil over top then highlighted with runefang steel and final another layer of shade, this time druchii violet to give it the purple magically glow I thought was fitting of a hexblade. The campaign so far has been very fun and I can’t wait to see what more this guy gets up to.
