kataang is cute but honestly it and the rest of the het ships in atla never #movedme. and ill admit those type of ships usually arent my favorite but i still usually like them. and i think the reason i didnt care much for it is because there wasnt enough romance development. like yes katara and aang definitely care for each other and aang has a obvious crush on her from the beginning but katara just stays oblivious to her feelings for most of the show?? its just a bit boring...

in my opinion i think it'd be better if katara was fully aware of her romantic feelings in book 3 and aang's death is what made her realize it. aang potentially being gone forever without getting to tell him how she really feels about him is a real wake up call to her. and katara being the way that she is fairly blunt about it? that and she starts acting the same way she was with jet and haru. i think it'd be cute if she's being very forward and constantly feeling shy around aang. like miraculous ladybug when ladybug became interested in chat noir lol.

but because aang let go of his attachment for her to get into the avatar state, it's now the reverse the dynamic where aang is the one clueless to katara feelings. he has so much to worry about now, ba sing se falling, he literally died thus 'failing' again, he doesn't know firebending, cant go into the avatar state, the time of the eclipse and comet are fast approaching, he doesn't know what to do other than kill the firelord, etc. (i actually think it would've been better for the aang book 3 arc for aang to be a constant buddle of nerves and with the avatar state breaking, regressing on alot of what he thought he overcame with pathik is reopened, like his grief perhaps)

with all that say i also think it should be katara that initiates their romantic moments instead. she confesses and kisses aang at the invasion, much to his surprise and joy. katara does it out of fear of anything happening to him without getting a chance to let her feelings known. but again due to how much aang is stressed out they haven't had the time to talk about it at all afterwards. then maybe at the ember island all aang can focus on is how the play is a painful reminder of all his failures. katara tries to comfort him by saying something along the lines of 'well you can rest assured my character saying she sees you as just a friend isnt true at all atleast haha.' aang tells her he's happy she likes him back he just doesn't know if it's the right time with everything going on. and maybe he's a bit self deprecating about it too. katara agrees with him sadly and pretty much the rest is the same and they kiss at the end yadda yadda.
