Spoilers for the new Detective Grimoire game, The Mermaid Mask, below

The culprit of the game is one of the best and most relatably written antagonists ever, because if I had gotten the attention of a giant mermaid who held me in her hand, I too would be obsessed with this moment for the rest of my life.

some minor things I noticed in Mermaid Mask. stuff from all throughout the game but there should be no major plot spoilers

the fireplace in the submarine parlor burns pink, the same as the incinerator in the tangle tower study

the pufferfish lamp in the mess hall is the same kind as the one in felix's room

the blue and red crayons on the table - the ones sally bets grimoire will turn out to be an important clue - i think sym used them to make her poster

the dome tank beneath madame tadpole's grotto is scratched on the inside, much like the aquarium in the center of tangle tower. i believe both contained the silkwirm at one point

speaking of which, i appreciate that grim and sally tend to call it the silversnake more often, since they knew it by that name already

sally mentions a couple of times that the piece of coral is weirdly sharp and crystalline - the coral itself is a mystid.

I also think there’s a part of Tadpole who straight despises Wirman for the way he’s infatuated with Magnus, seeing it as almost a mockery of him in a way. Writing a whole book on him is one thing, showing up to get inspiration is another, but then also developing a one-sided crush? It’s embarassing really.

At least hers makes sense. At least there’s something there palpable, the kind of thing that forms when someone saves your life. But this little man spends one evening chatting with the captain and suddenly he’s wringing his shirt collar everytime they brush up against each other on a crowded submarine. Pathetic…

But also she can’t blame him. It’s Magnus. And he’s as hospitable to Wirman as he is to everyone else (okay maybe not as hospitable as he is to Sim but that’s a special case).

Which makes it all the worse when he relaxes after Magnus’ death. And it’s all despising again.

Broooo it was so sad seeing her tryna defend him like girl he's guilty as fuck! And for WHAAAAAT he's basically dead anyways. I think. Maybe? I don't hope he's dead but I hope he comes to the painful realization that THAT wasn't what he was looking for. Dawg Symmetry needs to work out a bunch of trauma with Sinthia out in that cute cottage on the hill with Fifi and Poppy.

I'm so going to need to make my little theories as well cause omfg the egg symbolism is crazy good here.

The way he's staring at the mermaid's tongue all the while. That fuckinggg look in his eyes oh my godd. I just KNEW he was going to make a run for it and then when he took his time I was lulled into a false sense of security

And then

THIS

FUCKING

MOMENT.

CHILLS. UNNERVED ME TO MY CORE EVEN WHEN I KNEW IT WAS COMING

That fucking dead eyed stare. The turning off of the lights immediately after this. The knowledge that he was GOING to talk to the mermaid, the creature that mentally and physically scarred mortuga for life and caused all that damage to the aft deck—

And then when you arrive to see this.

It's SO GOOD. IT'S SO GOOD

Everything about this ending was exactly what I missed in the previous one– the resolution was absolutely top-notch

I'm so fucking obsessed with it I fear. I might have to replay it again immediately.
