What's your favourite extinct species?
The Tasmanian Tiger or Thylacine. Look at that beautiful creature.
The Tasmanian Tiger is a marsupial. Its scientific name is Thylacinus Cynocephalus, which means Dog Headed Pouched One. It gets the Tiger name from the stripes on its back.
The coolest thing about the Tasmanian Tiger is that huge jaw gap. Look at how wide its mouth opened! It could open its jaw to 90 degrees in order to eat large animals like kangaroos. Most of its diet depended upon opossums or wallabies. They had a weak jaw so they couldn’t kill the larger prey as efficiently.
Tasmanian Tigers look scary, but they were actually very shy and timid. They hid from humans and when captured, even if not hurt, they died quickly in captivity most likely because of fear.
Tasmanian Tigers also had a lifespan of only 7 years in the wild. In captivity, 9.
The last known Thylacine, Benjamin, died in a zoo in 1926. But, there has been sightings in Tasmania as well as reported droppings. They say that maybe there is a small population still around.
I hope so, because they are awesome.
