"Bonnie, please, believe me. I've changed"
"I know. So have I."
Was just thinking about how they didn’t really have Rebekah interact with Bonnie the way she did with Caroline and Elena. The envy Rebekah had for Caroline and Elena, the bitchy back and forth… there are people who ship Elena and Rebekah because of this tension! It was all very high school but the point is that Bonnie wasn’t really included.
Not saying she should have had a similar dynamic with Rebekah, but it’s just another way they left Bonnie out as a regular teenage girl. Sure, the ire was coming from a 1000+ year old but yeah.
The fandom needs to stop treating Tyler like he was the villain in his dynamic with Klaus. Tyler was a victim of a literal generational curse, got turned into a hybrid against his will, had his free will stripped away by a sire bond, and then Klaus murdered his mother and exiled him.
It’s really gotten to the point where I prefer Beremy over Bonenzo. Some Bonenzo fans are really just Enzo/Michael fans and harbor some sort of disdain towards Bonnie/Kat. At least Beremy could be ‘fixed’ through fanon and had some potential tropes to play around with (best friend’s brother, cheerleader/sporty/popular girl x emo boy), Bonenzo just sucks because Enzo is Walmart Damon/Klaus and people want her with the originals!
I get the genuine Bonnie fans who don’t like Bonkai. I really do. I just think that some of them don’t get where Bonkai shippers are coming from. Bonnie’s friends ‘rebel’ through their problematic romantic/sexual relationships, even to the detriment of their personal relationships and the group accepts this eventually.
Bonnie just never had that. There were obvious points in the story where she should have pulled away from her friends or had a dark arc but she wasn’t allowed to.
Kai Parker was another opportunity. He was a character that hadn’t picked her friends first. He was Bonnie centric. He actually doesn’t work without Bonnie (see Legacies). He doesn’t care for her friends. He is a loner, doesn’t care about social harmony past getting to his goals and that needed to rub off on Bonnie. He could have been used to facilitate much needed self centeredness in Bonnie.
Bonkai fans vary on whether or not they should have been endgame or not but there is an understanding of how Kai is an equal who would have given Bonnie the toxic romance her peers got. Like… even Matt got with Rebekah.
Also, if Bonnie was white or wasn’t written by racists, she suddenly wouldn’t have PTSD from Kai in season 6. She would have PTSD in season 1. If realism wasn’t a thing that only matters when it comes to Bonnie’s romance relationship and no one else’s, the others would be plagued with flashbacks and none of their relationships would have happened.
It’s the way that Bonnie can actually fight back against Kai too that’s ignored, making it mutual, but other girls just endure violence from their love interest and the narrative doesn’t focus on it nor show consequences. Everything is just different when it comes to Bonnie.
KAT GRAHAM as BONNIE BENNETT The Vampire Diaries, Season 1
TVDU Women ↬ Maligned, Misunderstood, Murdered
Bonnie Bennett
It was hard going from watching shows like Winx Club and H2O with tight knit female friend groups to the questionable barolena friendship… yeah I know the show centers romantic relationships but group dynamic could have been something special if they cared. It was never going to be good with how they decided to write Bonnie though.
Oh on a similar note, they could have had Kat wear a red wig and kept some of Bonnie’s book characterization. I like the brunette, blonde, red head color scheme in a trio.
I feel like TVD didn’t give enough focus to those kids being children of council members who protected their town against vampires. They grew up oblivious before being hit with reality at 17/18. They didn’t have enough time to grapple with everything before everything went to hell. Especially Elena, whose dad part of another shadowy organization at Whitmore and was experimenting on vampires. Yeah a lot of them were orphaned early on but introspection… flashbacks. Something.
I get such a huge ick when I hear anyone from the cast, crew or fandom say “klaus/damon were bad but there was nothing redeemable about Kai”
Like I’m not even advocating for Kai to be redeemed and forgiven, it’s more so I am just disturbed that only Kai gets stamped with that label. And I literally cannot think of one thing Kai did that made him “worse” than the other bad guys. The Salvatores, Klaus all have killed their own family, terrorized people, hurt people to get what they want. And they never apologized for it or even really struggled with it. If anything Kai was the only one who seemed to be beaten up by guilt.
And I don’t wanna hear no crap about how “oh well Klaus and Damon are vampires, Kai did evil when he was human.” That’s irrelevant because NOTHING klaus and damon have done has to do with their vampirism. Stefan is probably the only one who can get away with this excuse since his ripper phase is a direct result of being a vampire.
So anyway I’ve thought real hard about why the “Kai is the most irredeemable” narrative really doesn’t sit right with my spirit. And i think it’s because Klaus and Damon canonically romantically pursued white women. Kai didn’t, he loved Bonnie. And we all know that’s what made him irredeemable to Plec.
So whenever I hear anyone say “at least Klaus and Damon had redeemable qualities Kai didn’t” all I hear is “Klaus and Damon are allowed to be anti-hero’s because they loved white women.”
Prove me wrong. What else about Kai set him apart from other bad guys other than the woman he was shipped with?
Everything you said is is 100 percent correct nothing kai did was any worse then the rest its all about who he was shipped with if he was shipped with any of the other white woman we wouldn't be having this conversation at all i blame miss plec playing into and pushing this narrative kai worse when shes called kai a psychopathic bonnie lover as if it was a bad thing he loved bonnie 🙄 kai didn't have to be redeemed to even be with bonnie romantically even if they wasn't endgame what would that have hurt to explore that i don't get it i don't see any of the guys better or worse then kai they are equally bad boys and its hypocritical to say otherwise and just be like kai the only evil of all evil and everyone else is perfect redeemable saints
Kai would have been redeemable if he fell in love with Elena like all those TikToks that rave about their chemistry in that one scene. Somehow Bonkai is just wrong but Kailena? It’s great 👍
Loving the white paragons of virtue opens them up to either completely absolving them of their atrocities (they just so misunderstood and worthy of empathy, look at their circumstances!!) and/or making them worthy of redemption to earn someone like Elena. Black women just can’t be seen as that even though Bonnie is the most virtuous and kind hearted of them. So, Kai is just evil.
KAT GRAHAM AS BONNIE BENNETT ON THE VAMPIRE DIARIES
Klonnie > Klena > Klaroline
and I’m not even a Klaroline anti. I simply think Klonnie would make the most sense for the story.
I think if The Originals hadn’t concerned itself with centering Hayley, the show could have been a real exploration of the family’s past and psyches. I’m sorry but what we got isn’t really substantial enough for what are supposed to be 1000 year old immortals. I think Cami could have been used better as a device to get into Klaus’ head. I honestly am biased because I didn’t care for her as a love interest but they could have kept the seeing the good in him part.
Also, they don’t ever behave like people that old. Obviously it’s hard to grasp what that would look like but I just wanted more in many aspects. I don’t think it was as complex as it should have been. They didn’t delve into the enmeshment, emotional incest and codependency in a satisfactory way. The show should have been way more fucked up and uncomfortable due to confronting their love, hate and resentment for one another.
I don’t ship Bamon (like at all cause ew Damon 🤢) but it’s so true that there def should’ve been some sort of triangle in the prison world. With both Kai and Damon competing for Bonnie. Damon is a vampire who always used lust and sex as part of his feeding (yet we don’t even see him feed in the prison world). Kai is a charismatic sociopath who has been alone for two decades. Bonnie is an attractive woman in need of some action. Like the recipe was right there. 💀
If Bonnie was white, the show and the prison world specifically would have gone very differently. It’s the classic forced proximity trope. I know a lot of people’s problems with Bamon is that Damon can be quite mean to her sometimes! (and…. it’s Damon! I understand the contempt!) When she didn’t have her magic in the prison world and she was down, Damon was being shitty. That’s the opening Kai used. I think if Bonnie was white, they would have toned it down on the jabs and considered Bamon (if the show went the same exact way… it wouldn’t though). Especially since Nina was leaving at the end of season six.
The prison world could have been a vehicle for Bamon, Bonkai or an ongoing rivalry between the boys. Instead of Elena’s casket holding the show back, let Damon and the narrative move forward with the obvious choice… Bonnie being centered imo.
Anyway BACK to the prison world, she’s a hot girl in a world with two hot men. Nothing happens? On a show known for hookups, sensual feeding and romance. They just hated her fr. Since Damon is untouchable, let my girl get with Kai. I would have been more than satisfied (obviously).
They just had to kill their most charismatic character post Klaus because he was linked to BONNIE. They sabotage opportunities because of their dislike for Bonnie. She’s not good enough for Kai, for Damon to fight over/for in a weird sexually charged love triangle that crosses lines/boundaries.
They’re all weird about each other. We know it would have been …different (in a good way), far from the show’s usual 😴.
I cannot find the gifset do you guys ever think about how the writers shown us Elena’s hallucinations in (s4e6) and one of them detailed Katherine taunting Elena about how Bonnie secretly hates her after everything that’s happened Grams death, Abby being turned and then did nothing with that?
The writers were really building up (kinda) to them not being friends or some type of separation…
Just made myself upset thinking about how Julie and co shot down Bonnie and Liv. It’s not like I am super invested in them but the way that they purposely tried to isolate Bonnie from witches, tie her magic to sacrifice and not allow it to be a way to find community, friendship and romance with other witches… it pisses me off. Liv, Kai, Nora. They all had to die? They could never just exist and grow to be on the same side as one another without vampire drama keeping them apart?
You cannot tell me that bonliv wouldn’t be more interesting than beremy. You can’t.
Legacies (unfortunately) went with a lighter tone but I’ve been seeing Jacob Elordi’s Frankenstein a lot and somehow my thoughts went to how Hope was the perfect mix of the three species but Landon could have been a less than perfect amalgamation of the monsters his father had consumed and how they could have played with the horror of that! I don’t understand how Landon was so dull when he was kind of adjacent to being a tangle of monsters, an abomination among other monsters. Hope and Landon could have bonded over feeling like outsiders, partially being shunned by their peers but also through self isolation. Then there’s the tragedy of her being the key to destroying his father - and him. Fated enemies is such a good trope idc. There should have been uglier feelings and conflicts tied into the coming of age thing and the impossible romance.
Flesh out Malivore, like literally make him more than mud. Make him a horrific but sympathetic monster like Frankenstein who needs artifacts to complete his plan, ta da. Triad would be the big bad, the Triad before the retcon so the story goes from interspecies conflict (among the three species then branching out to those species vs the forgotten ones/whatever Landon is) to humans vs ‘monsters’ and is ultimately about prejudice and preconceived notions 😬. I don’t think canon dealt with the monstrosity, hero and villain, morally grey thing well.
