do u think a cat society that's more matriarchal could work? i've been (slowly) outlining one and it's fun (been looking at other matriarch societies among animals to get some inspo) but i'm kind of hitting a bit of a block, bc i have it set up atm where the father isn't involved in the raising of kits and the mom does most of it so mothers are heavily revered but i'm like wondering if that sounds plausible? gonna develop it more ofc but i'd like some thoughts on this

I don’t see why not! In feral cats the father isn’t often involved in raising kits, so this is perfectly plausible. The key thing is to find a role for the toms. In feral cats, toms will often fight for dominance and breeding rights, so perhaps they are the ones who typically partake in fights.

The factor that makes a society more matriarchal or patriarchal is that there are specific gender roles, and that the jobs of one gender are valued more. It doesn’t actually matter what those roles are - in western society, parenting and homemaking are often devalued, because they are usually considered to be the jobs of women. But that doesn’t mean that in making a matriarchal society, you simply have to flip what is valued. You just have to make sure that the roles assigned to mollies are more valued than the roles of toms. In this case it makes sense for parenting to be more valued, but you can really assign roles like hunting, fighting, and diplomacy however you want.

So if, say, the toms are involved in battles for territory, this job may be considered important, but not quite as important as raising kits. Fighting may be considered a bit frivolous, but necessary. Mollies who specialize in fighting may be made fun of or looked down upon. This is just one way to approach it, but hopefully you get the idea! There are tons of interesting ways to take this.

i'm working on my own naming system, but i love traditional naming as well, so i'd like to keep it but weave my own spin on it. obvs i couldn't use -whisker or anything like that, since that'd be too close to warriors, but i still like the idea of something like that. any advice/ideas on creating a naming system?

If you’re looking to stray significantly from warriors while still having a neat, cohesive naming system, there are a few ways to go.

Warriors names are distinctive because they’re almost always noun-noun. If you change this structure, it’ll sound distinct from Warriors. I push this pretty far with my -er system, but you can go for other things too! adjective-noun or adjective-verb could both be interesting but simple ways to change up the structure.

You could also take inspiration from Tailchaser’s Song by going with a three-part name - the main character’s full name is Fritti Tailchaser. Here’s an old forum thread by Grey about one way to do that, which was my inspiration for the -er suffix system! You could also incorporate family names, like I do on my Lioden account. My main man is Marius Suneater, and all his sons take Sun- as part of their last name, while daughters take from their mother. This is cool and helps track family lines to prevent inbreeding.

Or you could really diverge while keeping a cohesive system. Perhaps a name grows and changes not just as the cat rises through the ranks, but throughout their entire life. Perhaps they have multiple names for different occasions, and only one of them denotes rank. Consider what the purpose of names are. Is it meant to be more unique and personal, or more practical? What are the pros and cons of picking one’s own name? What is it you like about traditional naming anyway?

I'm trying to think of good gods or deities for my warriors rewrite. Do you have any ideas?

Ok, I’m just going to throw out as many things as I can so strap in.

Sun and moon are popular of course, since we’ve already got StarClan in canon, or you can go a little more abstract with heat and cold or day and night while still having the sun and moon be relevant.

Perhaps patron deities of each skill the cats value (and name after, if traditional naming is a thing you’re doing). I was thinking the other day about how cool it would be to have a pantheon with each suffix being derived from one of them. I might still do something with that, but you’re very welcome to steal it!

Deities based off of different animals - humans do this all the time, so why not cats? Could also be fun insight on how they stereotype different animals, and whether it’s the same or different from humans.

Personifications of abstract concepts, such as sound or courage.

Figure out what the most central concepts are, personify them somehow, and then have them keep creating other, increasingly esoteric gods until you get bored. This also gives you a bunch of things you can make stories about.
