Chekov is such a Slytherin, oh my god. He might seem genuinely confused in this seen, but he is deliberately fucking with this guy.

I know this because later Kirk says to him, “Name! Rank!” and Chekov immediately says his name (and of course, he makes a joke about his rank) without this cluelessness about what Kirk means. Chekov may be a funny character, but he isn’t stupid. He’s just trying to screw with this guy to find an opportunity to catch him off-guard and escape.

And it’s hilarious.
